Abstract

This study examines the negotiation process between traditional leaders and religious leaders in addressing the controversy surrounding same-clan marriages in Aek Nabara Barumun, which are perceived as conflicting with Islamic law. The issue arises because the local community continues to uphold customary regulations prohibiting marriages between individuals of the same clan as a form of respect for cultural values and ancestral heritage, while Islamic teachings permit such marriages as long as no mahram (prohibited kinship) relationship exists. These differing perspectives have generated social dynamics that require resolution through communication and deliberation to prevent conflict within the community. This study aims to understand how the negotiation process is carried out by traditional and religious leaders and to examine the role of negotiation in maintaining a balance between customary values and Islamic principles. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving traditional leaders, religious leaders, community members, and other supporting informants in Aek Nabara Barumun. The findings reveal that deliberation and persuasive approaches constitute the primary mechanisms for resolving the controversy over same-clan marriages. Traditional leaders seek to preserve customary practices as an essential component of the community’s cultural identity, whereas religious leaders emphasize the importance of conformity with Islamic law. The study also finds that the community is more receptive to social compromise than to direct prohibition, as customary traditions continue to hold strong cultural significance. Therefore, negotiation serves as a crucial mechanism for maintaining social harmony and balancing customary traditions with religious values within the community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the instructional communication patterns of the flag-raising team coaches in fostering student discipline at SMA Negeri 1 Hamparan Perak and to identify communication barriers that arise during the training process. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the coaches' instructional communication patterns are structured through providing directions, delivering instructions, corrections, as well as evaluation and feedback. The communication applied not only serves to convey training instructions, but also fosters student discipline through instilling the values of responsibility, compliance with rules, and self-awareness. Discipline that initially emerged due to external control develops into internal awareness that is applied in academic and daily life. Communication barriers found include differences in member characters, varying levels of understanding, lack of focus, physical fatigue, and environmental factors. Therefore, structured and consistent instructional communication plays an important role in fostering student discipline in flagraising team extracurricular activities.

The use of good, clear and easy-to-understand language is a benchmark in whether the information conveyed is well received and understandable by the recipient of the information. Journalistic language is a variety of creative language used by the press in writing news in the mass media. Journalistic language has characteristics such as specific, sparing words, not redundant, clear meaning, and communicative. By using concise and clear news language, journalists present interesting information to readers. In this study the authors focus on the main news or the main page. The main story is also referred to as the intro, meaning that the section is intended to make it easier for the reader to find out the contents of the news quickly. This study aims to determine the use of the language of the Daily Waspada newspaper. This study uses a qualitative approach, and the type of research is descriptive content analysis. The descriptive type of content analysis is used by researchers to provide an overview of the use of journalistic language analysis funds in the Waspada Daily newspaper. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted interviews and directly examined the news text in the main news of the Waspada Daily newspaper. The results of the research are that researchers in using the language of Harian Waspada apply journalistic language that is guided by the Big Indonesian Dictionary and Enhanced Spelling. Apart from that, the Waspada Daily also continues to rely on KBBI and guidebooks for news writing or procedural operational standards (SOPs). Then from the 5 headlines analyzed, the characteristics are not redundant and sparing words that are often violated.

Abstract

Film is a communication medium that combines two elements, namely audio (sound) and visual (image) which functions to convey a message to individuals or the general public who gather in a certain place. Film has so many meanings depending on the point of view of the researchers, in my opinion film is one of the mass communication media that displays a series of moving images with a storyline played by actors who have been produced by producers to convey a message to the audience. This study aims to find out the forms of discrimination against natives in the film Bumi Manusia based on Teun A. Van Dijk's discourse analysis by analyzing discriminate texts. This study uses a qualitative approach with Teun A Van Djik's critical discourse analysis as the motive. The data collection technique in this study is that researchers will carry out literature study techniques and note taking techniques. The data analysis technique was adapted to Teun A. Van Djik's discourse analysis, namely text and social context analysis. This research resulted in the conclusion that the film Bumi Manusia shows social discrimination through social status, education, laws that were in force at that time, and discrimination against women. The social context shows that the discrimination that occurred in the film Bumi manusia during the colonial era of the 1920s is still relevant to Indonesia's current situation.

Abstract

This study examines how interpersonal communication sustains the Mangambat Boru tradition among the Mandailing ethnic community in Siborangan, Labuhanbatu, amid intergenerational and socio-cultural change. The study is novel in positioning interpersonal communication not merely as a medium of cultural transmission, but as a social mechanism through which kinship values, symbolic meaning, and customary legitimacy are continuously negotiated across generations. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving traditional leaders, parents, and young people. The findings show that the preservation of Mangambat Boru relies on three interconnected communication forms: verbal communication through advice and dialogue, nonverbal communication through symbolic gestures and customary etiquette, and participatory communication in family and customary forums. However, this process is constrained by generational differences, limited comprehension of traditional language, and the declining intensity of face-to-face interaction in the digital era. The study contributes theoretically by reinforcing the view that interpersonal communication in cultural contexts functions not only to convey messages, but also to mediate meaning, authority, and adaptation within living traditions. Practically, the findings suggest that the preservation of local tradition requires adaptive communication strategies that are dialogical, culturally grounded, and responsive to the communicative preferences of younger generations.

Abstract

Customary forests in Indonesia serve not only ecological functions but also embody the spiritual values, cultural heritage, and collective identity of indigenous communities. In regions such as North Sumatra, Yogyakarta, Kalimantan, and Bali, these forests are regarded as sacred spaces preserved through myths, rituals, and time-honored customary rules. However, modernization, industrial expansion, and the lack of cultural digitization pose serious threats to their continued existence. This study aims to analyze the transformation of the ecological-spiritual values of customary forests into a digital-based conservation economy model, utilizing the metaverse and digital technologies. A qualitative research method was employed, involving a literature review and a comparative analysis of several indigenous territories in Indonesia. The findings indicate that digitizing cultural and ecological assets can serve as a modern conservation tool, bridging traditional values with the digital creative economy. The metaverse offers the potential to create a virtual space that sustainably represents customary forests, cultural rituals, environmental education, and interfaith spiritual tourism. Beyond strengthening local cultural identity, this approach creates new economic opportunities through digital ecotourism, cultural NFTs, and virtual educational platforms. The study underscores that integrating local traditions with digital technology can establish a future conservation model that is inclusive, sustainable, and adaptable to global developments.

Abstract

This article aims to identify and analyze the strengthening of social cohesion within the Angkola community through religious and cultural approaches in enhancing the competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This study employs a library research method using a qualitative and descriptive approach. The data utilized are secondary sources, including official documents, reports, scientific articles, and statistical data obtained from various government agencies and relevant institutions. Data were collected through an extensive review of literature and publications related to the role of micro-enterprises in the economic and social development of the Angkola community. The data were analyzed qualitatively by identifying, classifying, and interpreting information from multiple sources to gain a comprehensive understanding of social cohesion and the competitiveness of micro-enterprises within the Angkola society. The findings reveal that the roles of culture and religion in strengthening social cohesion among the Angkola community are reflected in various traditions and cultural practices that have been preserved across generations. Angkola local culture plays a crucial role in fostering social unity. One of the most significant traditions is Dalihan Na Tolu, which emphasizes kinship values, mutual respect, and harmonious social relationships. This cultural philosophy serves as the foundation for building fair social interactions and provides a peaceful mechanism for resolving conflicts, thereby maintaining social cohesion. Another important cultural and religious practice is the tradition of Mangitak. Initially, Mangitak referred to a traditional dish prepared exclusively for customary ceremonies due to its sacred significance for the community and the Batak kings. The preparation of Mangitak in the past involved the practice of Surat Tumbaga Hori an unwritten customary agreement known as Parpokatan or Martahi, meaning deliberation or collective discussion to prevent misunderstandings and ensure consensus among community members. Therefore, strengthening social cohesion through cultural and religious values contributes significantly to enhancing the competitiveness of MSMEs, as small enterprises function not only as economic institutions but also as instruments for community empowerment and the reinforcement of social relationships among members of society.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has transformed corporate communication patterns, making them more flexible, interactive, and integrated, including in marketing communication, which now requires strategic management of digital channels to ensure consistent messaging and strong relationships with the public. This research analyzes Ninja Xpress's digital communication as a means of marketing communication and information dissemination, based on Don E. Schultz's Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) perspective. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method through observation of digital channels (website, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube) along with a literature review, referring to IMC concepts that emphasize message integration, communication consistency, and relationship-building with audiences. The findings show that Ninja Xpress utilizes various digital channels with distinct functions while maintaining a consistent core message, namely ease of logistics services, support for MSMEs, domestic and international delivery reach, and technology utilization. Digital media are also used to build public relations through customer service, social media interaction, and educational content. However, responses to several customer complaints still tend to rely on generic templates, which do not always provide specific solutions. Overall, Ninja Xpress's digital communication has supported the implementation of IMC principles in strengthening brand image and public relations. The company is advised to improve the quality of digital interactions through more personal, solution-oriented responses focused on resolving customer issues.
