Abstract

Abit Godang and Parompa Sadun are important elements of the cultural heritage of the Batak Angkola community in Indonesia, embodying social values, identity, and customary meanings in everyday life. However, modernization, globalization, and changing lifestyles have led to a gradual shift in their meanings and practices, placing these traditions at risk of marginalization and potential extinction, particularly among younger generations. This study aims to examine efforts to revitalize the cultural meanings of Abit Godang and Parompa Sadun within the Batak Angkola community in Parsalakan Village, South Tapanuli Regency, Indone sia. This research employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and literature review involving traditional leaders, community members, educators, and youth representatives. The findings reveal that revitalization efforts can be effectively pursued through strengthening the role of Indigenous Peoples institutions, integrating cultural education into formal and informal learning processes, and encouraging active participation of the younger generation in cultural practices and ceremonies. In the context of education, the study highlights the importance of incorporating local cultural values into school curricula and community-based learning as a strategy for cultural transmission and identity formation. This educational approach not only enhances students’ cultural awareness but also fosters a sense of belonging and responsibility toward preserving local heritage. These strategies contribute to restoring the symbolic meaning and social relevance of Abit Godang and Parompa Sadun in contemporary society. The study concludes that sustained and education-based revitalization efforts are essential to ensure the continuity of Batak Angkola cultural identity in Indonesia and to preserve traditional values amid ongoing social change.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internal communication management between editors and journalists at Waspada Online in the news publication process and to identify the factors that support and hinder the effectiveness of internal communication. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research was conducted at the editorial office of Waspada Online in Medan City and involved two purposively selected informants: a managing editor and a journalist who were directly engaged in the news production and publication process. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was established through source triangulation and methodological triangulation. The findings indicate that internal communication management at Waspada Online is carried out through four management functions: planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling. The planning function is implemented through editorial briefings and the determination of news coverage agendas; organizing involves the allocation of tasks and responsibilities; actuating is conducted through direct communication and digital platforms such as WhatsApp, telephone, and the Content Management System; while controlling is performed through editing, verification, revision, and evaluation of news content prior to publication. Factors supporting the effectiveness of internal communication include structured briefings, clear task allocation, two-way communication, the use of communication technology, and editorial supervision. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include deadline pressure, network disruptions, limited access to field information, differences in perception, and repeated news revisions. This study demonstrates that structured internal communication management contributes to effective coordination, information accuracy, and the credibility of news publication at Waspada Online, although its effectiveness remains influenced by time constraints and the dynamic nature of digital media work.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze philanthropic practices, social solidarity mechanisms, and their contribution to improving the welfare and social functioning of the elderly through a case study of Lions Club Medan. This study applied a qualitative case study design. Primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews with cabinet management and field volunteers, alongside passive observation of health services and documentation review. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model and validated through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that philanthropic practices of Lions Club Medan are manifested through four structured pillars: nutritional distribution in nursing homes, white cane provision, hearing aid distribution, and monthly zero-cost end-to-end cataract surgeries. Viewed through Émile Durkheim's sociological perspective, this movement embodies organic solidarity through an integrated division of labor among management, specialized medical teams, and community volunteers who successfully overcome medical stigma resistance and rural transport barriers via subsidies and self-help initiatives. This philanthropic intervention contributes significantly to restoring physical vision, diminishing daily dependence, and reconstructing the social functioning and dignity of underprivileged elderly individuals within society.

Abstract

Digitalization has become one of the needs for business owners in adapting their business activities to technological developments. However, some MSME owners have not yet fully utilized digital services, both for transactions and for introducing their business locations to consumers. This community service activity aims to provide assistance to MSME owners in Tanjung Pinggir Urban Village through the use of QRIS and Google Maps as part of their business digitalization efforts. The activity was carried out through several stages, namely observation, data collection, coordination, assistance, and implementation of digital services for the participating businesses. Assistance was provided to three types of local businesses, namely a wholesale business, a grilled meatball (bakso bakar) business, and a beauty salon. QRIS was introduced as a non-cash payment method, while Google Maps was utilized to support the visibility and location information of businesses so that they could be more easily found by the public. The results indicate that the assistance provided business owners with new experiences and understanding regarding the use of digital technology to support their daily business activities. This activity also serves as an initial step in encouraging MSME owners in Tanjung Pinggir Urban Village to begin utilizing digital services as part of their business development.

Abstract

This study is motivated by economic conditions that have led women in Dusun Siluman A, Tebinglinggahara Village, Labuhanbatu Regency, to work as palm fruit (brondolan) collectors to support their families. Amidst uncertain income, these women are required to develop survival strategies while upholding religious values in their daily lives. This study aims to analyze the survival strategies employed by female brondolan collectors and the implementation of religious values in their roles as breadwinners. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, passive participatory observation, and documentation. The findings reveal that female brondolan collectors employ active, passive, and networking strategies to cope with economic hardship. In fulfilling their roles as breadwinners, these women continue to uphold religious values by adjusting their work schedules to accommodate prayer obligations, viewing their work as a form of sincere effort (ikhtiar), and instilling values of patience, gratitude, sincerity, and responsibility in their children. This study concludes that female brondolan collectors play a crucial role in sustaining their families' economic well-being without compromising the religious values that guide their daily lives.
