Abstract

Abstract

The increase of adverse reactions from anti-inflammatory drugs that are used in the long term by rheumatic patients requires a relatively safer alternative therapy. This research was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Usada Bali's instant parem (BIO-PAREM) as an anti-inflammatory agent against carrageenan-induced inflammatory mice. The method used was randomized pre-test and post-test with control group design using 24 mice which were divided into 4 treatment groups. The negative control group was given a vehicle, the positive control group was given anti-inflammatory gel of diclofenac sodium, group 3 (P1) was given BIO-PAREM with a concentration of 12.5% and group 4 (P2) was given BIO-PAREM with a concentration of 25%. All groups were induced with 1% carrageenan, then the mice's paw edema volume was calculated using a plethysmometer at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. The Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney test were used to analyse the relative change of inflammation volume. The BIO-PAREM phytochemical screening assay showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids and triterpenoids. BIO-PAREM showed significant inhibition of mice's paw edema at concentrations of 12.5% and 25% (p <0.05) indicating its potential as a candidate for topical alternative treatment for rheumatism.

Abstract

Seaweed is a photosynthetic organism, thus a good source of pigment-producing. Pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries widely use chlorophyll pigments for their products. Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) and Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.) are widely grown seaweeds in the waters of Bali. Pre-extraction steps such as drying and solvent selection can affect pigment extraction. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of solvent selection in the extraction of chlorophyll in fresh and dried Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) and Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.). The solvents used were ethanol, methanol, and acetone. Estimation of chlorophyll content was carried out using UV-VIS spectrophotometry. Data were analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the extraction of Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) on dry samples using acetone produced a total chlorophyll of 574.1 ± 33.2 g/g. Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.) extraction of fresh samples using methanol resulted in the highest total chlorophyll (10235.3 ± 50.3 g/g). In conclusion, drying and solvent selection affect the extraction of chlorophyll from Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) and Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.).

Abstract

The existence of side effects from drugs used for hair loss treatment urges the need for safer alternatives, especially from natural ingredients. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness and safety of hair tonic from Usada Bali (containing Polycias scutellaria, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Trigonella foenum graecum, and Cananga odorata) in mice. Experimental animals were divided into four groups: negative control was given a carrier fluid, positive control was given hair tonic on the market, and the treatment group was given hair tonic with simplicia concentration of 10% and 20%. Hair length was measured on days 7 and 21 with the treatment given daily topically on the backs of shaved mice. The irritation test was carried out at 24 and 48 hours. The data obtained were tested statistically by ANOVA test followed by Tukey's test with 95% confidence level. The results showed that the hair tonic formula contained alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and triterpenoids. The irritation test did not show any irritation on the skin of the mice. The hair growth activity test of the herbal hair tonic formula combination of Polycias scutellaria leaf, Hibiscus tiliaceus leaf, Trigonella foenum graecum seed and Cananga odorata flower showed significantly faster hair growth than the negative control at both concentrations and not significantly different from the positive control. This hair tonic formula has the potential to be developed into a natural hair growth agent without irritation to the skin.

Abstract

Antioxidant agents are essential for the body due to its ability to scavenge free radicals. Medicinal plants contain phytochemicals that act as antioxidants. The current research aimed to determine the total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant activity of Pereskia bleo leaves extracts from various solvents with different polarities. The nonpolar solvent (n-hexane) was used as the first step of extraction and its residues were then macerated using semi-polar (ethyl acetate) and polar (ethanol 96%) solvents consecutively. The TFC was determined using the colorimetric method while antioxidant activity was examined through the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Antioxidant activity was presented as Inhibitory Concentration 50 (IC50) and Antioxidant Activity Index (AAI). It is noticeable that among analyzed extracts, the ethyl acetate extract of P. bleo leaves contained the highest flavonoid content (15.052 ± 0.172 g quercetin equivalent/100 g extract). Furthermore, the greatest antioxidant activity was obtained from n-hexane extract with the value of IC50 and AAI being 217.307 ppm and 0.230, respectively. Pearson coefficient correlation (r) between TFC and AAI was -0.106. The current study concluded that P. bleo leaves extracts using solvents with different polarities showed variation in TFC values and antioxidant activity. Moreover, TFC was not the main contributor to the antioxidant activity of P. bleo leaves extracts.

Abstract

Infectious diseases are still a health problem throughout the world, including in Indonesia. One cause of infection that needs to be watched out for is resistance to Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria. Continuous use of antibiotics can cause problems with microbial resistance. Indonesia has various plant species that can actually provide benefits but have not been specifically cultivated. Jeruju leaves (Achanthus ilicifolius) from mangrove plants contain bioactive compounds that have the potential to be antibacterial. The aim of this research is to determine the antibacterial activity of Jeruju leaf decoction and infusion against MRSA bacteria. Antibacterial activity testing uses MRSA bacteria. The results of the phytochemical screening of Jeruju leaf infusion contained secondary metabolite compounds in the form of flavonoids, tannins, saponins and quinones. Meanwhile, the results of the phytochemical screening of Jeruju leaf decoction contained secondary metabolites in the form of tannins, saponins and quinones. Based on the results of research conducted on infusions and decoctions of Jeruju leaves at concentrations of 30%, 60% and 90%, they did not have inhibitory power on the antibacterial activity of MRSA, as seen from the inhibition zone. Zero inhibition zone for MRSA bacteria. It can be concluded that the infusion and decoction of Jeruju (Achantus illicifolious) leaves do not have antibacterial activity against MRSA.

Abstract

The use of ethnopharmaceutical practices remains widespread in Bali, as this knowledge has been passed down through generations. Although the Balinese people still strongly uphold their traditional healing systems and have long utilized plants as medicinal ingredients, there is still limited research documenting the diversity of plant species recorded in the Usadha manuscripts along with their therapeutic uses. This study aimed to inventory medicinal plants that are still used by the community in Banjar Saraseda, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali. The study employed a descriptive design, with data collected through interviews to obtain information from respondents regarding local plant names, therapeutic uses/indications, parts of the plant utilized, and methods of preparation and application. The data were analyzed descriptively and presented in tables. Based on the ethnopharmacological survey conducted in Banjar Saraseda, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali, a total of 20 medicinal plant species were recorded. The most frequently used plant parts were leaves (75%), followed by rhizomes (15%) and fruits (10%). The primary methods of preparation included boiling (65%), pounding (15%), grating, crushing, brewing, and direct use (each 5%). Based on therapeutic indications, the plants were mainly used to treat fever (20%), muscle pain and gout (20%), hypertension (20%), skin itching (10%), diabetes (10%), and to manage wounds, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids, and gastritis (each 5%). This study demonstrates that the Banjar Saraseda community in Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali continues to preserve traditional knowledge in the use of medicinal plants that has been inherited through generations.
