Abstract

Abstract

A healthy community forest can provide optimal benefits for the environment and the economy, particularly in increasing farmers' income. This study aims to analyze changes in community forest health and its relationship to farmers' income in Kubu Batu Village, Way Khilau District, Pesawaran Regency. The Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method was used to assess forest health, while quantitative analysis was employed to calculate farmers' income. Data were collected through interviews and ecological assessments in the field. The results showed a significant decline in forest health conditions from 2020 to 2024, with the average health score decreasing from 7.35 to 4.68. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between forest health and farmers' income, where better forest conditions resulted in higher income for farmers. However, the strength of this relationship slightly weakened in 2024. The decline in forest health was largely due to forest fires, which affected biodiversity and land productivity. Therefore, restoration efforts and better forest management are necessary to maintain productivity and improve the welfare of community forest farmers.

Abstract

Negative interactions between elephants and humans can cause harm to both parties, one of the efforts made is the implementation of the Elephant Response Unit (ERU) in helping to handle negative interactions between Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) and humans. This study aims to determine the activities and tasks of the Elephant Response Unit (ERU) in handling negative interactions in the area around Way Kambas National Park (TNWK). Data collection was carried out by conducting observations, open interviews and collecting documentation in the form of photos of activities. The research includes direct observation of the border between forest areas and buffer villages, forest security patrols, expulsion of wild elephants and care for tame elephants. The results from direct observations show that there is no infrastructure such as canals and embankments that are evenly distributed in the area around TNWK and the lack of active participation of the community in several buffer villages in helping to handle negative interactions. Security patrol activities are in the form of tracking to identify and look for the presence of illegal activities carried out by humans in forest areas and elephant eviction patrols using tame elephants to repel wild elephants. The management of activities carried out by the Elephant Response Unit (ERU) is very important because it can help handle negative interactions between elephants and humans and safeguard forest areas.

Abstract

The Klawing River plays an essential role as a source of livelihood for local communities and as a habitat for various fish species, yet it is increasingly under pressure from human activities and environmental changes. This study aims to identify the forms of local wisdom practiced by fishing communities in managing fishery resources and to assess their relevance to modern challenges. The research was conducted in five villages representing the upstream, middle, and downstream sections of the river using a qualitative descriptive approach through interviews and observations involving 40 respondents. The results show that local wisdom is reflected in the use of traditional fishing gear (nets, gillnets, fishing lines, paser, wuwu, and mijahan), the application of the pranata mangsa as a seasonal fishing guide, social solidarity among fishers, and the Gredug Sampah tradition focused on maintaining river cleanliness. These practices now face limitations due to climate change, the introduction of invasive species, and economic pressures. The declining accuracy of the pranata mangsa indicates the need to integrate traditional ecological knowledge with modern climatological information to enhance community adaptation to ecosystem dynamics. Therefore, the synergy between local wisdom and scientific approaches is crucial for achieving an adaptive and sustainable fishery resource management system in the Klawing River.

Abstract

Avifauna is one of the biodiversity that has a role in the ecosystem, namely as a seed spreader, helps pollination, and as an environmental bioindicator. The Elephant Training Center (PLG) is not only a conservation centre for Sumatran elephants but also serves as a habitat and preserves the diversity of all animals including avifauna species. One form of conservation efforts towards avifauna is to record the diversity of the avifauna species present in that location. This study aims to determine the diversity of bird species found in the Way Kambas National Park PLG. The study was conducted using the point count method at three observation locations: garden area, grassland, and swamp area with three repetitions. The results of the study found 33 species from 21 families (727 individuals) with moderate species diversity values (1 <H '<3). The diversity of bird species affects the existence of some species in a habitat so that it affects the quality of habitat and plays an important role as a bioindicator in an ecosystem. Bird conservation efforts need to be carried out and supported by all parties to maintain the existence of birds in their natural habitat. Abstract

Pisang Island is one of the leading objects of tourist destinations in Pesisir Barat Regency, Lampung Province and has a good potential to be developed for ecotourism. The present problems are the tourist visits that caused disruption and decline in the environmental quality it is important to know the maximum limit of tourist visits to prevent environmental damage. The purpose of this study was to analyze the carrying capacity of the ecotourism sites. The study was conducted in June 2018 - January 2019. The research method used a geographic information system (GIS). The tourism track data that was taken using a global positioning system (GPS) tracker processed using Arc Gis 10.3. The data obtained was then calculated to determine the ecotourism's physical, real and effective carrying capacity. The results revealed that the physical carrying capacity at Pulau Pisang was 175,000 individuals/day, while for real and effective carrying capacity were 27,887 individuals/day and 744 individuals/day respectively. The number of visitors who visit during working days was below the carrying capacity. However, the visit was over the carrying capacity during a holiday such as Idul Fitri days. Therefore, it is necessary to limit visitors during holidays so that environmental sustainability and the comfort of the visit could be maintained.
