Abstract

Teaching language to students with special needs presents unique challenges, requiring tailored strategies to address diverse learning abilities and disabilities. Despite the growing emphasis on inclusive education, there is limited research on effective language teaching methods for this population. This study explores strategies for teaching language to students with special needs, focusing on their impact on language acquisition and engagement. The research aims to identify and evaluate effective strategies for teaching language to students with special needs, focusing on their impact on language proficiency, engagement, and inclusivity. It seeks to provide practical recommendations for educators to create supportive and effective learning environments. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 50 students with special needs and their teachers. Data were collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and pre- and post-tests to measure language proficiency. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis, while quantitative data were analyzed using statistical software. The findings revealed that multisensory approaches, visual aids, and individualized instruction significantly improved language proficiency and engagement among students with special needs. Teachers reported that these strategies enhanced students' confidence and participation. However, challenges such as resource limitations and lack of training were also identified. Tailored strategies, such as multisensory approaches and individualized instruction, are effective in teaching language to students with special needs. Educators should prioritize inclusive practices and professional development to address challenges and enhance language learning outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the mediating role of technology-based learning in the relationship between students’ perception of cultural diversity and their inclusive attitudes in Jakarta’s multi-campus higher-education environment. Using a quantitative explanatory design, data were collected from 280 students across five universities—Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, BINUS University, Universitas Katolik Atma Jaya, and Universitas Tarumanagara—through a Likert-scale survey. The variables measured included perception of cultural diversity (X), technology-based learning (Z), and inclusive attitude (Y). Data were analyzed using multiple regression with mediation testing via the Baron and Kenny (1986) approach and Sobel test using SPSS 26. The results reveal that perception of cultural diversity significantly predicts both technology-based learning (β = 0.55, p < 0.001) and inclusive attitude (β = 0.42, p < 0.001). When the mediator is included, the direct effect decreases to β = 0.19, while the indirect effect remains significant (Sobel z = 5.98, p < 0.001), confirming partial mediation. The inclusion of the mediator also increases the model’s explanatory power (ΔR² = 0.16). These findings indicate that digital learning environments act as catalysts that convert intercultural awareness into inclusive behavior through collaborative and reflective online experiences. The study concludes that fostering inclusive attitudes requires both positive cultural perception and deliberate integration of inclusive digital pedagogy. It contributes to theoretical understanding of digital mediation and provides practical insights for curriculum design and institutional policy in promoting inclusive education

Abstract

This community service project aimed to develop students’ translation competence while contributing to the preservation and internationalization of local literature. Implemented at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Banyuwangi, the project involved 26 English Language students in a three-month experiential program titled “Translating Local Literature into English.” The activities consisted of a translation workshop, fieldwork in Kemiren Village—a center of Osing culture—and the compilation of bilingual manuscripts. Students were trained in literary translation theory and techniques, then conducted field-based data collection, interviewing local elders and documenting oral texts. These texts were translated collaboratively, with the final outputs compiled into a bilingual anthology entitled “Echoes of Osing.”Survey results showed a significant increase in students’ translation skills and cultural awareness, with over 90% indicating improved confidence and understanding. The project also strengthened university–community engagement by positioning cultural stakeholders as co-educators in the translation process. The field immersion allowed students to appreciate the sociocultural context of Osing literature and provided real-world insights into the complexities of language transfer. The bilingual anthology and accompanying video documentation were disseminated through both print and digital platforms, expanding access to regional Indonesian literature for global audiences. This program demonstrates that student-led literary translation can be a powerful medium for cultural preservation, academic skill-building, and grassroots cultural diplomacy. It highlights the potential of integrating community-based learning with academic programs, offering a sustainable and replicable model for universities aiming to link global engagement with local knowledge. The project also contributes to preserving linguistic diversity and promoting intercultural understanding through education.
