Abstract

This paper investigates how Indonesian English language and science teachers in Jambi municipality perceive the relationship between national identity and local culture in English and Science teaching. Through thematic analysis, the study explores teachers’ understanding toward the role of national identity in English and Science teaching as well as the challenges and strategies teachers encounter in integrating national identity into their teaching practices by the inclusion of local culture, emphasizing the importance of Jambi cultural context in the teaching. The research results reveal a number of findings such as teachers’ beliefs that exploring national identity in the classroom can help students develop a sense of belonging and awareness of their place in a multicultural world. However, they express varying degrees of emphasis on national identity, with some advocating for a bigger portion of context of local culture, while others may prioritize students’ development of English mastery no matter what culture is embedded. Teachers also report challenges and strategies employed, for instance the conduction of collaborative learning to help students learn from each other’s perspectives, designing inclusive teaching materials to include diverse perspectives of national identity, and enhancing teachers’ understanding of cultural sensitivity and identity issues. To conclude, it is recommended to build adequate support for a balanced English and Science teaching designs that respect and celebrate national identity while, at the same time, be able to prepare students for global engagement. By fostering the integration of local and global perspectives, English and Science education in Indonesia will be able to create English and Science teaching environment that empowers students as both national and global citizens.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of politeness violations in digital live streaming interactions, focusing on gaming content on YouTube a platform increasingly characterized by the prevalence of “toxic” language, including harsh, derogatory, and provocative expressions. Such discourse poses a growing challenge to communication ethics and character education in the technological era. The research aims to analyze specific types of politeness principle violations and their implications for character formation and digital communication practices. Adopting a qualitative approach through observation, documentation, and interviews, the study found that violations most frequently targeted the principles of tact and generosity. Notably, these utterances were not merely spontaneous outbursts but deliberate strategies of performative impoliteness, designed to construct a particular self-image and amplified by platform algorithms seeking engagement. The novelty of this research lies in its integration of linguistic analysis, digital ethics, and character education within the context of real-time live streaming—a convergence rarely explored in prior studies. This interdisciplinary approach provides unique insights into how algorithm-driven platforms can normalize verbal aggression, influencing audience psychology and diminishing empathy values, particularly among student viewers. The findings highlight the urgent need to expand digital literacy education to encompass the ethical dimensions of communication, not just technical proficiency. The study recommends incorporating polite language awareness and ICT ethics into curricula to foster respectful, constructive interaction in online spaces.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to identify and analyze how Early Childhood Education teachers in Jambi construct meanings and implement early childhood sex education through Jambi Malay local wisdom and Islamic values. Sex education for young children is positioned as a preventive, value-based effort to protect children from sexual violence while helping them develop developmentally appropriate understandings of the body and personal boundaries. A qualitative design focusing on teachers’ perceptions is used to capture their interpretations and practical considerations in delivering sexuality-related learning within PAUD settings grounded in culture and religion. This approach aligns with previous studies on PAUD educators’ knowledge and attitudes toward early childhood sex education, which emphasize the importance of teacher parent communication and sociocultural mediation in implementation. Data were collected from four teachers purposively selected from two PAUD institutions in Jambi and were analyzed thematically to build interpretive patterns, consistent with research that treats teachers’ perspectives as key to understanding how sex education is delivered and received in Islamic preschool contexts. The analysis produced two main findings: (1) teachers frame early childhood sex education as urgent for child protection and moral formation, interpreting modesty, privacy, and the principle of “adat bersendi syarak” (custom founded upon Islamic law) as a dynamic framework for age-appropriate learning, and (2) teachers operationalize this meaning through culturally relevant, child-friendly strategies such as storytelling, play-based learning routines, and habituation of boundary-setting. These findings indicate that values and norms are socialized through everyday practices and that culturally rooted media and traditional games can function as effective pedagogical vehicles in Early Childhood Education. The study implies that strengthening culturally responsive teacher competence and structured collaboration with parents is necessary to reduce misconceptions, improve message consistency, and sustain preventive impact.TRANSLATE with x EnglishArabicHebrewPolishBulgarianHindiPortugueseCatalanHmong DawRomanianChinese SimplifiedHungarianRussianChinese TraditionalIndonesianSlovakCzechItalianSlovenianDanishJapaneseSpanishDutchKlingonSwedishEnglishKoreanThaiEstonianLatvianTurkishFinnishLithuanianUkrainianFrenchMalayUrduGermanMalteseVietnameseGreekNorwegianWelshHaitian CreolePersian //  TRANSLATE with COPY THE URL BELOW Back EMBED THE SNIPPET BELOW IN YOUR SITE Enable collaborative features and customize widget: Bing Webmaster PortalBack//

Abstract

This paper explores the philosophical and practical tensions shaping English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesian primary schools, focusing on the interplay between global educational demands and local pedagogical realities. Situated within language policy studies and critical pedagogy, it examines how Indonesia’s pursuit of global competitiveness through early English instruction intersects with its multicultural, multilingual, and geographically diverse education system. The study highlights potential benefits of early English learning, including cognitive development, enhanced economic mobility through linguistic capital, and alignment with ASEAN regional integration goals. Yet, it also interrogates persistent barriers such as the shortage of qualified English teachers for young learners, stark urban-rural disparities in resources, and the epistemological clash between standardized global frameworks and Indonesia’s linguistic diversity. Analyzing recent policy reforms—particularly the Kurikulum Merdeka and its decentralization principles—the paper illustrates how educational innovations seek to balance universalist language paradigms with culturally grounded approaches. Employing critical discourse analysis, statistical review, and philosophical reflection, the study argues that sustainable ELT must transcend the global-local binary, embracing integrative pedagogies that respect Indonesia’s cultural and linguistic richness while fostering global engagement. Ultimately, the paper recommends context-responsive teacher development, culturally relevant curriculum design, and equitable policy implementation to reimagine English education as a space for both global participation and the affirmation of local identity.
