Background. Caring for schizophrenia is a challenge and a burden for caregiver. In fact, family caregivers did not know how to care schizophrenia at home. A home management care base coaching is urgently needed. It can be used as a basis for nurses to assist caregivers in caring for persons with schizophrenia. Aims and Objectives. The study aimed to determine the feasibility of a home care management model base coaching for family caregivers of persons with schizophrenia.Methods. The study was two groups pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design. Thirty family caregivers were assigned into experimental and control group with each group 15 persons. Data were collected using the Chiang Mai Psychiatric Caregiving Scale, the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale and the Schizophrenia Caregiver Quality of Life questionnaire. It was six weeks activities with several methods, such as discussion, watching videos, providing information, training, and home visit. Results:The participants who receive interventions reported significantly more improved in caregiving skills (p<0.05), increased quality of life (p < 0.05)and decreased the level of burden care (p<0.05) than those receiving the routine care. Conclusions:The study revealed that home care management model base coaching intervention was effective to improve caregivers’ outcomes in caring for relatives with schizophrenia.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the condition of metabolism affected by chronic hyperglycemia (the increase of glucose levels in the blood) caused by insulin secretion defect. One of the non-pharmacological therapies used to decrease the type 2 DM is cognitive behavioral therapy. The objective of the research was to identify the effect of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) on self management and self-care behaviors of type 2 DM patients. The research used a quasi-experimental method with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The samples were 70 respondents with 35 of them were in the intervention group and the other 35 were in the control group, taken by using a consecutive sampling technique. The data were gathered using the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaires (DSMQ) and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) questionnaires. The gathered data were analyzed by using paired t-test, and independent t-test. The results of the study showed that there were significantly differences of mean scores of self management and self care behaviors between intervention and control groups (t=13.24; p=0.00) and(t=14.63,p=0.00), respectively. It is recommended that cognitive behavior therapy can be used as one of the non-pharmacological therapiesto change self-care behaviors in type 2 DM patients.

The increasing number of patient with chronic renal failure can also increase the number of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Hemodialysis is normally undergone by the patients to maintain their life as well as to transform their lifestyle. Hence, patients need effective motivation that will affect the quality of life of patients undergoing hemodialysis. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between motivation with quality of life in patients undergoing hemodialysis. It was a correlational study using a cross-sectional approach. This study was conducted at a private hospital in Medan. The research sample was all patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis at Imelda Pekerja Indonesia Hospital in the year 2018, with the total number of sample was 79. The data was collected through questionnaire administration. Spearman test was performed to examine the data. The result of the study showed that there was a positive correlation between motivation and quality of life among patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis (r=0.813; p<0.05). The high motivation of patients influences their quality of life to undergo hemodialysis. This study can be used as a reference for nurses to provide health education to patients and their families. High motivation and how to improve quality of life are essential course for the patients. The advancement of nursing sciences and technologies has brought impacts to nurses in providing nursing interventions. It is common for nurses to face ethical dilemma and to make ethical decisions in order to overcome challenges in nursing intervention provision. Nurses are required to have adequate knowledge and competencies in taking ethical decision. This study aims to identify the effect of nursing ethical training on the reinforcement of nurses’ role in ethical decision making. This study was a quasi-experimental research using non-equivalent control group design. The study was conducted at private hospitals in Medan City. The research samples involved 100 respondents who were divided into 2 groups, namely control group (n=50) and intervention group (n=50). The research instrument consisted of a set of questionnaire assessing the demographic data, knowledge, attitude, nurses’ action, and observation. Mann-Whitney U test was performed in data analysis. The results show that nursing ethical training has an effect on the reinforcement of nurses’ role in ethical decision making, including knowledge, attitude, and nursing intervention (U=-3.40, p<0.01; U=-5.45, p<0.00; and U=-2.07, p<0.03) between the control group and the intervention group. Background: A caregiver is a primary nurse and has a major role in providing care for people with schizophrenia. Caring for those with schizophrenia for a long period of time is challenging for families, especially for caregivers. Various needs ought to be studied by nurses to assist caregivers in providing optimal care for family members who experience schizophrenia. Objective: This qualitative study aims to explore the needs of caregivers in treating schizophrenia at home. Methods: This study employed a phenomenological study design. A total of 10 respondents were selected using a purposive sampling with criteria: 1) having family members diagnosed with schizophrenia, 2) directly involved in taking care of patients at home, 3) caring for patients with schizophrenia for more than one year, 4) willing to be a participant by signing an informed consent, and 4) being able to identify what is needed in treating schizophrenia. Colaizzi’s method was used to analyze the data. Results: There were four themes of the caregivers need in caring for schizophrenia patients at home, including 1) seeking information about schizophrenia, 2) sought healing through regular treatment, 3) looking for appropriate rehabilitation for relatives with schizophrenias, and 4) utilizing mental health facilities. Conclusions: It is expected that nurses have the knowledge and skills in identifying and helping the families, especially the caregivers, to meet unmet needs so they can optimize home care.

Background: Patients with hemodialysis often have difficulty in controlling their fluid intake although the obedience to follow fluid and dietary restriction is the key of hemodialysis success management. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of low-sodium diet management on thirst response in end stage renal disease patients with hemodialysis. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pre-posttest with control group design. Using consecutive sampling 88 respondents were selected, which 44 assigned in each group. Thirst distress scale and visual analog scale questionnaire were used for data collection. Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Of the total of respondents, thirty-seven respondents experienced a decrease in thirst distress scale with p= 0.000 (p <0.05); and 30 respondents experienced a decrease in visual analog scale with p=0.000 after given low sodium diet management. There was difference of thirst distress scale score (p=0.008) and visual analog scale of thirst score (p=0.048) between intervention and control group. The importance of continuous of diet education with counseling and home visit can increase self-management behaviors. Conclusion. Low sodium diet management could reduce the thirst response in end stage renal disease patients with hemodialysis.
