Abstract

This study aims to develop digital teaching materials designed to strengthen cultural and civic literacy among elementary school students in the monocultural context of Singkawang City. Using the ADDIE model as the instructional design framework, the research employed mixed methods combining expert validation, small-group testing, and field trials. The materials were developed by integrating local wisdom and cultural identity into interactive and engaging digital formats. Validation results from content and media experts indicated high feasibility with an average score of 94. Smallgroup testing showed a practicality level of 83.6%, while field testing demonstrated a significant increase in students’ learning outcomes, with pretest and posttest scores improving from 42.12 to 83.45. These findings confirm that the developed materials are effective and suitable for Civic and Pancasila Education at the elementary level. The study’s novelty lies in embedding local culture into digital learning design to foster deeper understanding, cultural pride, and active citizenship. Although limited to one cultural setting and short-term outcomes, the findings highlight the potential of culturally grounded digital materials to enrich learning. Future research should expand their application to broader contexts and explore advanced technologies to further enhance engagement and cultural literacy.

Abstract

Indonesia is a multicultural country. In a multicultural society, tolerance is a crucial aspect of fostering harmony and peace, so students must have a strong understanding of its values. However, the data indicate that intolerant behavior among the public remains significantly high. Inter-ethnic, racial, and tribal conflicts continue to be prevalent, according to the data. Therefore, the best way to overcome this obstacle is by organizing learning that can stimulate students to understand the values of tolerance. This is because students are the next generation, the spearhead in fostering tolerance in a multicultural nation. Consequently, this research aims to apply the VCT (Value Clarification Technique) model to assess its impact on students' knowledge achievement related to tolerance values. This study involved 37 students from one elementary school in Singkawang City, Kalimantan, comprising 20 students in class A (experimental group) and 17 in class B (control group), using a quasi-experimental research design. Data analysis was performed using the independent samples t-test. The research results indicate that the Sig. (2-tailed) value exceeds 0.05, so it can be understood that the VCT model influences students' acquisition of knowledge about tolerance values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strengthening of social literacy among PGSD students through issue-based learning in the Elementary Social Studies Basic Concepts course. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews with lecturers and students, and documentation of learning activities and student work. The findings reveal that, in the initial stage, students’ social literacy was predominantly descriptive, characterized by a superficial understanding of social issues and a limited ability to connect social studies concepts with contemporary social phenomena. The implementation of issue-based learning through stages of issue introduction, exploration and analysis using social studies concepts, critical discussion and social reflection, and synthesis of findings was shown to effectively enhance students’ social literacy. Students demonstrated improvements in analytical thinking toward social issues, the integration of social studies concepts with social realities, and the development of critical, reflective, and social empathy attitudes. The role of lecturers as facilitators and active student participation emerged as key factors in the success of the learning process. Nevertheless, the study also identified challenges related to the complexity of social issues, limitations in students’ analytical literacy, time constraints in lectures, and variations in students’ critical thinking abilities. These findings imply that issue-based social studies learning is a relevant pedagogical strategy for strengthening social literacy and for preparing prospective elementary school teachers with social awareness and critical thinking skills.
