Abstract

This study examines the professionalism of nâzir waqf (endownment administrators) at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor (PMDG) in Islamic Boarding School located in Gontor, Ponorogo, West Java, in managing waqf assets. The goal is to obtain an overview of how Islamic principles are applied as a standard of professionalism in waqf governance to improve the community’s economic welfare. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, applying the triangulation method to ensure data validity. Data analysis follows the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing or verifying conclusions. The results of the study show that although the modern professionalism framework often adopts Western professionalism indicators, in fact, long before the emergence of Western theories, Islam already had the same concept rooted in ‘amal (action), itqân (diligence), and ihsân (goodness). These concepts differ both epistemologically and axiologically. A professional nâzir at PMDG is expected to embody the qualities of shiddîq (honesty), amânah (trustworthiness), tablîgh (effective communication), and fatânah (intelligence). He is also expected to act as a manager, administrator, evaluator, leader, supervisor, innovator, and motivator. This study offers a theory-and practice-based model of waqf management professionalism for developing Islamic philanthropic institutions that align governance practices with sharia principles and modern management standards.

Abstract

Indonesia, with its vast tropical rainforests, faces serious threats such as illegal logging and forest fires that exacerbate greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. Amid this crisis, Green Waqf emerges as an innovative solution that leverages philanthropy for environmental conservation. This research examines the potential of Green Waqf in supporting forest conservation, carbon emission reduction, and climate change mitigation in Indonesia. The primary focus is on exploring the integration of Green Waqf with conservation efforts and the social and environmental benefits it offers, as well as identifying challenges and opportunities in its implementation. The methodology employed a qualitative, library-based approach, which enabled the author to verify prior research findings and contribute new elements. Descriptive analysis was used to provide an in-depth understanding of related theories and experts' views. The findings indicate that Green Waqf can be an effective tool for mitigating climate change through forest conservation projects, tree planting, and resource management. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, Green Waqf also provides social benefits by creating local economic opportunities and enhancing community welfare.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of professional waqf at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor for Girl from the perspective of Maqasid al-Syariah. Professional waqf is understood as a form of empowerment of individual skills potential that are donated for the benefit of education, da'wah, and community development. This study seeks to explore how the principles of Islamic law and the objectives of sharia (maqasid), especially hifz al-'aql, hifz al-nafs, and hifz al-māl are actualized in the practice of managing and implementing professional waqf in the Islamic boarding school environment. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical research type. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with caretakers, waqf managers, and teachers as actors in professional waqf, as well as a documentary study of the internal regulations of the Islamic boarding school and literature related to waqf law. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions with verification of Islamic legal theory and the concept of maqasid al-Sharia as an analytical framework. The research results show that the implementation of professional waqf at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor for Girls reflects the principles of maqasid al-sharia through professional service oriented towards the welfare of the community, educational sustainability, and institutional independence. Although not yet formalized in positive law, this practice has strong sharia legitimacy as a contemporary waqf innovation in Islamic education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the alignment between corporate zakat obligations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within the framework of Islamic law, particularly maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. The objective of this research is to clarify the conceptual relationship between corporate zakat as a mandatory obligation and CSR as a corporate responsibility aimed at promoting social welfare. This study employs a qualitative research design using a literature review approach, drawing on secondary data from scholarly publications and conceptual studies. The findings indicate that CSR and corporate zakat share common normative foundations, emphasizing social benefit (maṣlaḥah), distributive justice, and the protection of public welfare. This conceptual convergence supports the argument that CSR can function as an institutional mechanism to strengthen zakat values when oriented toward genuine social objectives. The study implies that corporate zakat governance can be enhanced through an integrated CSR–zakat framework to improve systematic social contribution and community welfare.

Abstract

Waqf has a strategic role in the economic empowerment of Muslims through innovative and productive utilization. However, public understanding and literacy about waqf is still relatively low. This community service programmed aims to increase waqf awareness and literacy through the Indonesian Waqf Awareness Movement (GISWAF) activities implemented at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor (PMDG) Female Campus. The implementation method involves a participatory approach consisting of education, case study discussion, practical training, and pre-test and post-test evaluation. The programmed was designed to determine the extent of understanding and awareness of waqf after the counselling. The pre-test and post-test results of the 150 Gontor teacher participants showed that the Gontor teachers' understanding and awareness of productive waqf and some of its schemes were not very deep. It can be seen from the percentage of answers 54% correct and 46% incorrect, which is still dominated by incorrect answers. Meanwhile, the post-test has shown a significant difference, which is dominated by correct answers with a percentage of 87% correct and 13% incorrect answers. Thus, it is clear that the impact of the counselling has changed for now, but there needs to be development and sustainability so that the understanding gained by Gontor teachers can be maximized. Participants also demonstrated the ability to design and manage productive waqf projects in the education and economic sectors. However, challenges related to technical understanding and implementation remain, which require ongoing mentoring. Suggestions include the digitalization of training modules, strategic partnerships with waqf institutions, and the development of an online platform to expand the impact of the programmed. These efforts are expected to create waqf literacy agents that contribute to the welfare of the ummah.

Abstract

This study analyzes the realization of maslahah in the implementation of Government Regulation No. 42 of 2024 concerning mandatory halal certification for street vendors in Blitar Regency. Enforced on October 17, 2024, the regulation aims to ensure halal product assurance, strengthen consumer protection, and support the sustainability of micro and small enterprises. The issue is significant as the policy directly affects informal economic actors who often face regulatory and administrative constraints. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with street vendors and relevant stakeholders and supported by an analysis of regulatory documents and related literature. The analysis focuses on assessing whether the implementation of the regulation delivers public benefit (maslahah) while maintaining proportionality and legal fairness. The findings indicate that halal certification provides tangible legal and economic benefits, including increased consumer trust, improved sales turnover, expanded market access, and enhanced business legitimacy. The policy has been generally well accepted, particularly due to government facilitation through simplified procedures and the free self-declaration halal certification scheme. From the perspective of Islamic legal theory, the implementation of this regulation reflects maslahah dharuriyah, as it safeguards religious compliance (hifz al-din) and promotes economic welfare (hifz al-mal). This study highlights halal certification as a regulatory instrument aligned with the objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-shari‘ah).

Abstract

As Islamic educational institutions, Islamic boarding schools play a vital role in shaping the community’s understanding of the fulfillment of fardhu kifayah, including the proper procedures for caring for the deceased in accordance with Islamic law. However, based on conditions on the ground, there are still gaps in the knowledge and skills of both congregants and students regarding the correct procedures for handling the deceased. This community service activity aims to improve the understanding of congregants and students regarding the care of the deceased in order to foster public awareness and preparedness in fulfilling the obligation of managing the deceased. The method used is the ABCD (Assets-Based Community Development) approach, which is based on needs for development. Data collection for this community service project was conducted through observation, interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and documentation. The results of this community service study indicate that the congregation members’ and students’ understanding of managing the deceased has improved, particularly regarding preparing shroud materials for men and women, the positioning of the shroud, the number of ties, and the proper procedures for wrapping the body and securing the shroud in accordance with Islamic Sharia regulations. However, there were minor challenges among some elderly congregation members, resulting in less than optimal acceptance. Additionally, this program has had the added benefit of fostering collaboration between the community service team, the Islamic boarding school, and the congregation at Pesantren Al Ghazali.
