Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ thinking processes in understanding concepts by considering the variations in mathematical thinking styles. This research is motivated by the finding that students demonstrate different thinking styles and intelligence, which is evident in the distinct ways they represent and design their learning approaches. This study employs a qualitative research method, using interviews based on tasks through the think-aloud method for data collection. The research instrument consists of a written test designed to probe students' thinking processes in understanding mathematical concepts according to the indicators of conceptual understanding used in this study. The researchers used time triangulation techniques to ensure the validity of the research data. The data analysis followed a structured process: data classification, reduction, presentation, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The research subjects comprised three students with different mathematical thinking styles, namely visual, analytical, and integrated, who shared similarly high mathematical ability levels. The findings show that subjects with a visual mathematical thinking style create representations in the form of images, tables, or graphs for each indicator of understanding. Subjects with an analytical mathematical thinking style create representations in the form of verbal sentences or mathematical models that are rich in mathematical symbols and variables. While subjects with an integrated mathematical thinking style create representations in the form of verbal sentences, images, diagrams, mathematical symbols, tables, mathematical models, or graphs. The study concludes that while the type of mathematical thinking style—visual, analytical, or integrated—does not significantly influence the depth of students’ conceptual understanding, it does shape the strategies they employ to construct that understanding. All three students demonstrated the ability to interpret, exemplify, classify, summarize, infer, compare, and explain concepts effectively, a consistency attributed to their shared high level of mathematical proficiency.     Keywords: mathematics, conceptual understanding, mathematical thinking style, cognitive process.

Abstract

The development of hand body care products in gel form, incorporating natural ingredients, remains an underexplored area, particularly concerning the combination of avocado (Persea americana) extract, Stingless bee (Trigona sp.) honey, and pollen in cosmetic formulations. Gel formulations are favored for their superior skin moisturizing properties and enhanced dermal absorption compared to lotions. This study aimed to evaluate the stability and moisturizing efficacy of novel hand body gel formulations containing varying ratios of P. americana extract combined with Trigona bee pollen and honey. Employing an experimental quantitative design, three distinct gel formulations were prepared with different concentrations of P. americana extract with Trigona bee pollen and honey. The stability of these formulations as skin moisturizers was assessed through a comprehensive evaluation encompassing organoleptic properties, homogeneity, potential for irritation, pH, spreadability, viscosity, and moisture content analysis using skin analysis instrumentation. The results indicated that the gel formulation designated F1, containing 2.5% P. americana extract and 7.5% honey combined with bee pollen, exhibited the highest skin moisture content, suggesting its potential as an effective moisturizing hand body gel.

Abstract

Concept construction is essential for developing mathematical abilities such as conceptual understanding and problem-solving. The APOS theory (Action, Process, Object, Scheme) offers a framework for conceptual development through mental activity sequences. A key factor influencing concept construction is students’ learning readiness, which is strongly tied to their initial abilities. This study investigates the relationship between learning readiness and concept construction, as well as describes students’ concept construction profiles based on APOS theory. Employing a mixed-method approach with an explanatory sequential design, the study involved 34 eleventh-grade students from a public high school in Gresik. Data collection techniques included cognitive diagnostic assessments, written tests, think-aloud protocols, interviews, and classroom observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using regression and correlation analyses, while qualitative data were processed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. Findings revealed a very strong, positive correlation (r=0.9046) between learning readiness and concept construction, suggesting that higher readiness aligns with more complex conceptual structures. Additionally, three profiles emerged: students with advanced readiness displayed complete analytical constructions; those developing readiness showed pseudo-complete constructions; and newly developing students exhibited incomplete geometric constructions. Future studies should explore APOS-based instructional models tailored to readiness levels and validate findings across broader mathematical topics and grade levels.
