Abstract

Abstract

Background: The teak-based agroforestry system in Gemawang Wonogiri Village has the potential for various types of constituent tree vegetation that can act as carbon stock stores. This research was conducted considering the limited research on teak-based agroforestry systems, especially in the Wonogiri area. This study aims to provide information on tree vegetation's composition, structure, and diversity and determine the potential carbon stocks of tree vegetation standing in teak-based agroforestry systems. Methods: The research method used a 20 x 20 m2 plot of 1 ha, and the plots were placed using a purposive sampling approach. Results: Found nine species of tree vegetation from 8 families with 271 individuals ha-1. The species of teak tree (Tectona grandis) has the highest INP of 81.56 %. The Diversity Index is moderate, with a value of 1.79, and the Dominance Index is low at 0.21. The amount of carbon stored in tree stands is 45.71 MgC ha-1. Conclusions: This research can give information and points of reference about the structure and composition of stands in agroforestry systems and their potential to store carbon stocks. The research data is useful for the community as a source of information regarding the condition of the agroforestry area in Gemawang Village so that they can make optimal use of the area by developing suitable vegetation.

Abstract

The residents of Ngasem Village already possess knowledge about the importance of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA). However, they are not yet familiar with the benefits and methods of processing these medicinal plants. KWT Berkah Tani 2, located in Ngasem Village, Colomadu District, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, has a large yard that remains underutilized, presenting the potential for planting TOGA. Therefore, the objective of this community service initiative is to educate the members of KWT Berkah Tani 2 about family medicinal plants, covering everything from planting to their health benefits. The program was carried out in six stages, including pre-testing, initial socialization, TOGA planting, simple processing of traditional medicinal products, post-testing, maintenance activities, and supervision. Ten types of medicinal plants were cultivated on a 700m2 area. The TOGA education program successfully increased participants' knowledge of basic TOGA concepts by 50%. Furthermore, there was a 20% rise in the number of participants who planted TOGA in their yards, and a 61.5% increase in knowledge regarding the health benefits of TOGA.

Abstract

Litter is a fragment of aboveground carbon stocks, a vital bridge to the belowground carbon cycle. Land conversion to agricultural purposes will affect litter production. This study aimed to compare the litter production of natural forests with cocoa-based agroforestry systems (AFS) in West Sumatra. Litter production was measured in five different types of ecosystems, namely natural forest (NF), cocoa-rubber-based AFS (CR), multistrata cocoa-based AFS (CM), cocoa-coconut-based AFS (CC), and cocoa monoculture (M). This study is quantitative research with the collection method. The difference in litter production between the five ecosystems observed was tested using ANOVA parametric statistical method. Litter was collected monthly for one year in which litter traps were evenly distributed in each research plot. Ecosystems of NF and M produced the highest annual litter (6.04 Mg ha-1 and 4.65 Mg ha-1 respectively), while CR produced the lowest one (2.52 Mg ha-1). Although this study did not perform comprehensive modeling of decomposition dynamics, the measurement of annual litter production can provide a further understanding of the dynamics of ecosystem carbon, especially in cocoa-based agroforestry.

Abstract

The community service was conducted at the Putri Aisyiyah Orphanage in Bekonang, Sukoharjo, Central Java. This orphanage has yard space that has not been utilized for Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) and is not yet familiar with the concept of an eco orphanage. The main objective of this service is to provide education about TOGA to the children at the Putri Aisyiyah Bekonang Orphanage. The service activities comprise six phases: pre-test, socialization, TOGA planting, practices in processing traditional medicinal products, post-test, and maintenance and supervision. The outcomes of the service activities include the planting of twenty types of medicinal plants in the orphanage's yard. Participants' knowledge increased after receiving education about TOGA, encompassing basic knowledge of TOGA (12.4%), types of TOGA and their characteristics (38%), and the health benefits of TOGA (33%). There was an enhancement in participants' knowledge regarding the types and benefits of TOGA, with an average total increase of 27.7%. Thus, this service has succeeded in providing education about TOGA to the children at the Putri Aisyiyah Bekonang Orphanage and enhancing their understanding of the types of TOGA and their health benefits.

Abstract

Stake plants, commonly known as saplings, are needed  to enhance soil structure, mitigate erosion, and bolster ecological stability. This research is essential as it provides a reference for knowledge pertinent to connected issues, which can be utilized to formulate policies that promote sustainability in natural forest ecosystems. This study seeks to ascertain the composition and structure of seedling vegetation in the Girimanik Natural Forest Area, Wonogiri. This research has not been conducted previously. The research methodology employs a quadratic sampling technique. Twenty-five plots, each measuring 5x5 m², were utilized by purposive sampling. This research identified 296 varieties of seedling plants across 30 species and 22 family. The sapling vegetation community in this region is predominantly composed of Pygeum parviflorum (nyampuh; English: Prunus), exhibiting an INP score of 59.24. The computed Shannon-Wiener diversity index in this study was 2.74, indicating a moderate amount of diversity, characterized by a balanced distribution of individual numbers without extreme diversity index values in the Girimanik forest area
