Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder marked by high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) that is caused by insulin deficiency. It also affects male infertility. Pakkat, young rattan, contains various phytochemicals, which can affect blood glucose levels, spermatogenesis, and testosterone production. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of Pakkat extract in regulating blood glucose levels, testosterone hormone, and spermatogenesis in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. This experimental study used 25 diabetic male Wistar rats and was grouped into five groups including negative control (distilled water), positive control (metformin), Treatment 1 (125 mg/KgBW Pakkat extract), 2 (250 mg/KgBW Pakkat extract), and 3 (500 mg/KgBW Pakkat extract) for 14 days. All data were analyzed by One-way ANOVA followed by a Post-Hoc Test. Pakkat extract at 125 mg/kgBW dose effectively reduced glucose levels (P-Value < 0.001) after 14 days. It also significantly increased spermatogenesis (P-Value < 0.001) and testosterone levels (P-Value < 0.001) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Thus, it can be concluded that any doses of Pakkat (Calamus L. Blume) extract significantly improve blood glucose levels after 14 days of administration. However, a higher dosage is required to increase spermatogenesis and testosterone hormone in diabetic conditions.

Abstract

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungus that can cause infections, especially in individuals with low immune systems. Efforts to control this fungal infection can be done by utilizing natural ingredients as an alternative antifungal. Pineapple leaves (Ananas comosus) and green betel leaves (Piper betle L) are known to contain active compounds with antimicrobial properties. This study aims to determine the inhibitory power of a combination of pineapple leaf and green betel leaf extracts on the growth of Candida albicans and to compare their effectiveness at various concentrations. This research is a laboratory experimental study using the disc diffusion method. Three groups of extract concentration combinations were used: 20%, 40%, and 60%. The diameter of the inhibition zone was measured in millimeters, and data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test followed by a Tukey HSD test. The results showed that the 20% concentration produced the largest average inhibition zone diameter of 38.32 mm, while the 40% and 60% concentrations produced 28.46 mm and 28.31 mm, respectively. The ANOVA test showed a significant difference between groups (p < 0.05), and the Tukey HSD test showed that the 20% concentration was significantly different from the other two groups. The combination of pineapple leaf and green betel leaf extracts at a concentration of 20% was the most effective concentration in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans compared to concentrations of 40% and 60%.

Abstract

An incision in the abdominal wall is made during laparatomy, a significant surgical surgery, and the healing duration for this incision can vary. Patients should engage in early mobilization, or physical activity to increase blood circulation and decrease the risk of problems, right after surgery. This can hasten the healing process of wounds. The purpose of this research is to find out how early mobilization affects wound healing, pain levels, and hospital stay duration for patients at Royal Prima Hospital Medan who have undergone a laparotomy. Using a cross-sectional design, this study employed quantitative analytical methods. Patients who underwent a laparotomy between 2020 and 2024 made up the study's population. Using inclusion and exclusion criteria, a convenience sample of 35 individuals was chosen. The data was examined using the ChiSquare test, which was derived from patient medical records. Early mobilization was performed by the majority of patients (91.4%), and 88.6% of those patients had satisfactory wound healing. "Significant relationships between early mobilization and wound healing (p = 0.000), pain severity (p = 0.003), and length of hospital stay (p = 0.018) were shown by statistical tests. It is evident that early mobilization is crucial for patients to experience faster wound healing, less pain, and a shorter hospital stay following laparotomy. In conclusion, patients' wound healing processes are significantly improved by early mobilization following laparotomy. The goal of healthcare providers is to educate patients and routinely practice early mobilization in order to hasten healing and avoid complications after surgery.

Abstract

Background: Insomnia is a common problem among university students and is often associated with psychological factors such as anxiety and modifiable daily behaviors. This study aimed to examine the relationships between anxiety levels, specific daily habits (including caffeine consumption, physical activity, and academic stress), and the occurrence of insomnia among students aged 20 to 25 years at Universitas Prima Indonesia. Methods: An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted in May 2025. A total of 94 students participated as respondents. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, including the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). The chi-square test was applied to analyze the associations between variables. Results: Most respondents were female (61.7%) with a mean age of 21.21 years. Descriptive analysis showed trends suggesting that higher anxiety and physical activity levels were associated with increased insomnia rates. However, statistical analysis revealed no significant relationship between anxiety and insomnia (p = 0.203) or between physical activity and insomnia (p = 0.190). In contrast, caffeine consumption showed a statistically significant association with insomnia severity (p = 0.006). Conclusion: Although anxiety and physical activity were not significantly related to insomnia in this study, caffeine consumption was identified as a significant modifiable risk factor. These findings emphasize the need for targeted health education programs to improve sleep hygiene among students, particularly by addressing caffeine intake to enhance sleep quality.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory condition of the pilosebaceous glands characterized by various types of lesions, commonly affecting adolescents and young adults. Among the principal causative bacteria are Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. Conventional topical antibiotic therapy may lead to side effects such as skin irritation and antibiotic resistance, which points to the importance of alternative antimicrobial agents sourced from natural products. This experimental study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of a combination of ethanol extracts of pineapple leaves (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) and green betel leaves (Piper betle L.) against P. acnes and S. aureus. The extracts were prepared using the maceration method with 96% ethanol and tested at concentrations of 20%, 40%, and 60%. Antibacterial activity was determined by the disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) on Nutrient Agar, using clindamycin as the positive control and sterile aquadest as the negative control. The results demonstrated that all concentrations of the extract combination produced inhibition zones against P. acnes (mean diameters: 20.23 mm, 22.69 mm, and 24.85 mm) and S. aureus (mean diameters: 20.51 mm, 20.23 mm, and 24.74 mm), with the greatest effects observed at 60% concentration. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference in inhibition against P. acnes (p = 0.016), but not against S. aureus. These findings support the potential use of pineapple and green betel leaf extract combinations as alternative topical antibacterial agents for acne treatment, particularly against P. acnes, and warrant further research into their use as natural anti-acne formulations.
