Abstract

The lack of contextual and environmentally relevant learning approaches, such as place-based pedagogy, causes students to lack understanding of the importance of environmental conservation in real life. This article examines the place-based pedagogy approach in increasing students' awareness and participation in environmental conservation, focusing on the habitat of the Proboscis Monkey. The study used qualitative methods to evaluate the impact of an educational approach that connects learning to the local geographic, cultural, and ecological context. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, involving students, lecturers, and the Indonesian Proboscis Monkey Friends Foundation. Data analysis was conducted thematically with triangulation to ensure validity. The results showed that the place-based pedagogy approach significantly increased students' ecological awareness, encouraged direct involvement in conservation, and built emotional connections with the local environment. The study recommends the integration of the place-based approach into the higher education curriculum, with a focus on practical activities such as field research, community service projects, and seminars with conservation practitioners. In conclusion, the place-based pedagogy approach can effectively increase students' awareness and involvement in environmental conservation. The implications of this research include the need to strengthen collaboration between universities and local communities, develop inclusive and contextual education policies.

Abstract

Local wisdom-based approach to create relevant, contextual, and in-depth learning is very important in social studies learning. This study aims to analyze the integration of Dayak Deah local wisdom in learning Social Studies with a powerful learning approach in Tabalong State Junior High School. The research method is qualitative with a case study design, with data collection through interviews, observations, and document analysis to obtain data from teachers, students, and principals. The results showed that the integration of Dayak Deah local wisdom, such as the tradition of farming in shifts and the preservation of customary forests, was able to improve students' understanding of the concept of sustainability, the relationship between humans and nature, and socio-cultural values. Activities such as simulation of customary traditions and direct observation of the community provide a more contextual and meaningful learning experience. However, challenges such as teachers' limited understanding of local wisdom and the lack of local culture-based teaching materials affect the effectiveness of implementation. The conclusion of this study confirms that the powerful learning approach is relevant to improve the quality of local wisdom-based learning. With teacher training, teaching material development and digital documentation of local values, this model can be more widely adopted as a sustainable education strategy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper examines local culture and traditions as representations or means of accommodation for the socio-economic and cultural expectations of the Banjar community, particularly among women. Specifically, this paper explores how the Banjar community, especially Banjar women, build, grow, and transform knowledge through the reading of Siti Khadijah’s manaqib. The recitation of Siti Khadijah’s manaqib is a tradition among Banjar women, and it is performed on various occasions during specific religious rituals. In particular, the recitation of Siti Khadijah’s manaqib is also routinely carried out in religious institutions on the 11th day of each Hijri month. Banjar women in this study play an active role in socio-cultural transformation. An important finding in this study is that religious institutions, especially the ritual of reading Siti Khadijah’s manaqib, are a dynamic expression of Banjar women’s social and economic spirit. Through religious institutions, primarily through the ritual of reading Siti Khadijah’s manaqib, women play a role in dynamizing the economy and teaching worldly asceticism. Siti Khadijah’s reading of manaqib reflects how local communities foster and raise hopes for prosperity, ensuring the sustainability of life and society.

Abstract

Regional songs serve as repositories of cultural values and identity markers, yet limited scholarly attention has examined their role in transmitting religious and social values within specific ethnic communities. This study applies Paul Ricoeur's three-stage hermeneutic framework—explanation, understanding, and appropriation—to analyze four purposively selected songs by Anang Ardiansyah: Batasmiyah, Bismillah Kata Bamula, Puhun Rambai, and Paris Barantai. Selection criteria included: (1) representation of different thematic elements (religious practice, cultural identity, social solidarity, environmental connection), (2) widespread recognition within Banjar communities, and (3) availability of complete lyrical texts. The explanation stage involved literal textual analysis, understanding examined cultural-contextual meanings within Banjar Islamic traditions, and appropriation explored contemporary relevance for cultural preservation. Analysis reveals three primary symbolic domains: (1) religious integration through ritual terminology ("Bismillah kata bamula", "batapung tawar") demonstrating Islamic-Banjar cultural synthesis, (2) social solidarity mechanisms embedded in zakat and gotong royong references that prescribe communal responsibility, and (3) place-based identity construction through geographical markers ("Kotabaru gunungnya bamega") and natural symbols (rambai tree) that anchor cultural belonging. The study's theoretical contribution lies in demonstrating how Ricoeur's hermeneutic appropriation stage can illuminate the contemporary transmission of traditional values through musical narratives. These findings provide empirical evidence for integrating Anang Ardiansyah's compositions into formal Islamic education curricula as supplementary materials for akhlaq (character) instruction, and suggest developing community-based cultural workshops using these songs as discussion frameworks for intergenerational value transmission among Banjar diaspora communities.

Abstract

This study explores how social disparities manifest in environmental conservation efforts within buffer zones of protected areas, adopting a comparative case study approach across ten diverse settings in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America. Drawing on qualitative data, it investigates the distribution of benefits, community engagement, and accessibility to natural resources. The analysis reveals that conservation models driven by incentives frequently deepen pre-existing inequities, particularly when policies are crafted without inclusive consultation or sensitivity to local realities. Common challenges identified include elite capture, resource privatization, limited representation of vulnerable groups, and displacements that disregard customary rights. Despite the presence of community-driven initiatives such as local monitoring schemes and ecotourism ventures their impact is often constrained by inadequate governance structures and superficial community involvement. The research underscores the necessity of embedding principles of justice and equity into conservation frameworks to achieve outcomes that are not only ecologically sound but also socially just. Conceptually, this work contributes to critical debates at the intersection of environmental governance and social equity. Practically, it offers guidance for policymakers to design more context-responsive, participatory, and rights-based conservation strategies. In sum, the findings affirm that sustainable conservation is unattainable without meaningful inclusion and respect for historical and cultural claims.
