Abstract

Language shift occurs from one language to the next, or to a language that is not displaced by other dialects. Local language is one of the parts of culture, but it is also a method of communication utilized by society to connect socially with each other. Language has numerous social roles, especially social communication, social regulation, and social cooperation. The function of language in communication is to send messages. Based on initial observations done by the author in Assilulu village, Leihitu sub-district, Central Maluku Regency, it was observed that practically all teenagers aged 12-17 do not know the Assilulu language. Thru a sociolinguistic study with a phenomenological method, this paper will detail the variables underlying the change from the usage of regional language to Indonesian (Ambon Malay) in communication in Assilulu Village. The population of this study is all teenagers living in Assilulu Village. The research sample was taken randomly. Data was acquired by observation or listening methods and interviews. Based on the research conducted in 2022, several factors were found to cause this language shift, including: the family's level of education, the choice of straightforward and polite language within the family, the family's age, the family's social stratification, the lack of regional language learning for the family, the family's residential area, and the family's attitude toward language. The Indonesian language used in family communication in Assilulu Village is dominated by Ambon Malay.

Abstract

This community service activity was motivated by the limited ability of Indonesian language teachers in secondary schools in Ambon City to produce publishable scientific works. The aim of this program is to strengthen teachers’ academic literacy through structured, contextual, and sustainable training and mentoring in scientific writing. The method employed was Participatory Action Training (PAT), engaging teachers actively in needs analysis, intensive workshops, and post-training mentoring. The results indicated a significant improvement in teachers’ academic writing skills, digital reference management, and the establishment of an interschool teacher writing community. A total of 35 teachers completed their manuscripts, and 12 were recommended for publication in national journals. This activity successfully fostered a culture of academic writing and collaboration between schools and universities in island regions. The implication highlights that sustained mentoring and contextual approaches are effective strategies to enhance teacher professionalism and build a sustainable academic literacy ecosystem in areas with limited access to educational resources.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the phenomenon of semantic interference in Ambon Malay as used by OSM adolescents in Nusaniwe District, Ambon City. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research focuses on verbal data collected from two adolescents through observation, interviews, and video recordings. Data were analyzed using an interactive model encompassing data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that adolescents’ daily interactions are strongly influenced by their mother tongue (Ambon Malay), cultural conceptions, and the integration of foreign language elements, while their awareness of using Indonesian remains limited. Among the three theoretical categories of semantic interference—semantic extension, additive semantic interference, and replacive semantic interference—only semantic extension interference was found in the speech of the respondents. This indicates that the meaning of words in Indonesian is often expanded or shifted under the influence of Ambon Malay, resulting in deviations from standard usage. The study highlights the dominant role of Ambon Malay in everyday discourse, particularly among adolescents, and suggests that this linguistic behavior reflects broader sociolinguistic dynamics in Ambon City, where regional languages and cultural practices play a significant role in shaping communication patterns.
