Abstract

Stunting remains a significant public health challenge in Makassar City, with prevalence rates exceeding national targets and World Health Organization thresholds. Contributing factors include socioeconomic disparities, limited access to healthcare, suboptimal parenting practices, and inadequate nutritional intake. The OPTIMALCARE program introduces a community-based homecare policy innovation to accelerate stunting reduction through integrated health services, family-centered nutrition education, routine growth monitoring, and a mobile nutrition monitoring application. This program engages health workers, Posyandu cadres, and community leaders to deliver proactive home visits, promote behavioral change, and ensure timely interventions. A participatory approach strengthens local capacity, fosters cross-sector collaboration, and leverages technology for real-time data collection and analysis. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2, SDG 3, and SDG 17), regional development priorities, and national research agendas on child health and nutrition. Through targeted outreach, community empowerment, and evidence-based interventions, OPTIMALCARE aims to improve healthcare accessibility, enhance parental knowledge, and foster sustainable community involvement, ultimately contributing to a significant decline in stunting prevalence in Makassar City.

Abstract

Introduction: Bartholin cysts are common in women of reproductive age and may cause significant pain, particularly when infection or abscess formation occurs. Pain management is typically approached through pharmacological and surgical interventions. However, non-pharmacological methods such as deep breathing relaxation (DBR) have emerged as promising complementary strategies. This scoping review aims to identify and map the scientific evidence related to the application of deep breathing relaxation techniques for pain management in patients with Bartholin cysts.. Methods: The review followed the Arksey and O’Malley framework. A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar using keywords including “Bartholin cyst,” “deep breathing,” and “pain management.” Eligible studies were screened and analyzed descriptively. Results: A total of 11 studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, and observational studies. Most studies reported that DBR techniques such as diaphragmatic and paced breathing effectively reduced pain intensity, enhanced patient comfort, and decreased anxiety prior to procedures for Bartholin cyst treatment. Conclusions: Deep breathing relaxation techniques represent a promising non-pharmacological approach for managing pain in Bartholin cyst patients. These methods are simple, non-invasive, and capable of improving the overall care experience. Further high-quality studies are needed to strengthen the evidence base for their effectiveness in this specific clinical context

Abstract

Introduction: Acute gastroenteritis is a leading cause of dehydration in children and is commonly encountered in healthcare settings. It presents with symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, which lead to significant fluid and electrolyte loss. If not managed promptly, dehydration can result in serious complications, including death. Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) has long been recommended as a first-line, effective treatment for mild to moderate dehydration in pediatric patients. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral rehydration solution (ORS) in treating dehydration caused by acute gastroenteritis in children. Methods: This descriptive case study involved two male pediatric patients, aged 1 and 2 years, who presented with dehydration due to gastroenteritis. The intervention included administration of ORS at a dosage of 40–100 ml/kg within the first 4–6 hours, accompanied by clinical monitoring over three days. Clinical parameters observed included frequency of defecation, skin turgor, oral mucosa condition, eye appearance, and level of consciousness. Results: Both patients showed improvement in clinical signs of dehydration. The frequency of defecation decreased from 4–5 times to 1–2 times per day. Skin turgor normalised, oral mucosa became moist, eyes appeared less sunken, and both children became more active and responsive. No adverse effects were reported, and both subjects responded positively to the therapy. Conclusion: Oral rehydration therapy using ORS effectively manages dehydration caused by acute gastroenteritis in children. It is a safe, simple, and accessible method that can be utilised in clinical settings and at home as a first-line response to dehydration

Abstract

Playing origami is an activity of folding paper into a shape or picture by moving the hands while thinking. The purpose of this Community Service Activity is to provide a solution to the problems faced by school-age children through origami play therapy to improve children's fine motor skills. The method of this activity is an intervention in origami play therapy on the development of children's mental health, emotions, and behavior. The results of the implementation of Community Service activities, play therapy for children, went well and smoothly. The conclusion is that Community Service activities show that there is an increase in knowledge of new creations made by children and increase their insight into creativity in playing.

Abstract

Introduction: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder requiring continuous self-care to prevent complications. Health education plays a crucial role in enhancing patients’ understanding, attitudes, and skills for effective self-management. This study aimed to investigate the impact of health education on self-care behaviors among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest–posttest design with a control group. The study involved 60 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) selected using purposive sampling from a public health center. The intervention group received structured health education sessions covering diet management, physical activity, medication adherence, and blood glucose monitoring for a period of four weeks, while the control group received standard care. Data were collected using the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conducted using paired and independent t-tests with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The findings showed a significant increase in self-care behavior scores in the intervention group after receiving health education (p < 0.001), while no significant change was observed in the control group (p > 0.05). The mean difference between the two groups indicated that health education had a positive effect on self-care behavior among patients with T2DM. Conclusion: Health education has a significant impact on improving self-care behaviors among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Structured and continuous education increases patients’ awareness, adherence, and ability to manage diet, exercise, medication, and blood glucose monitoring effectively. Healthcare providers should integrate regular health education programs into diabetes management to enhance patients’ self-care skills and prevent complications. Further research with larger samples and longer follow-up is recommended to evaluate the long-term impact of such interventions.

Abstract

Introduction: Clinical competence is a crucial component of nursing education, particularly in midwifery care, where students must integrate knowledge, technical skills, and decision-making to ensure the safety of both mothers and newborns. Traditional classroom learning often fails to provide sufficient opportunities for hands-on experience. Simulation-based learning has emerged as an innovative pedagogical approach to enhance clinical competence in a safe and controlled environment. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of simulation learning methods in improving the clinical skills of nursing students in midwifery care. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre–post design was conducted among 80 nursing students enrolled in a midwifery course. The intervention group participated in a structured simulation learning program involving high-fidelity obstetric manikins and scenario-based training on antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care. The control group received conventional lectures and demonstrations. Data were collected using an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) checklist and a self-efficacy questionnaire before and after the intervention. Paired and independent t-tests were used to analyze changes in clinical skill scores and confidence levels. Results: The findings revealed a significant improvement in the clinical performance of students in the simulation group (mean score increase from 68.4 ± 7.2 to 86.7 ± 6.5; p < 0.001) compared to the control group (72.1 ± 8.0 to 75.8 ± 7.6; p = 0.054). Students also reported enhanced confidence and readiness for real clinical practice. Conclusion: Simulation-based learning effectively improves clinical skills and self-efficacy in midwifery education. Integration of simulation into nursing curricula can bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring better preparedness for clinical settings.
