Abstract

This study examines the use of bald on record and positive impoliteness strategies in President Prabowo Subianto's speech at the National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) of the Central and Regional Governments held on February 2, 2026. In that forum, the President openly reprimanded the governors and regents of Bali in front of thousands of regional heads from all over Indonesia for their failure to handle the waste crisis, which was deemed to tarnish the national tourism image. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach by applying Culpeper's (1996; 2011) impoliteness theory framework as the analytical instrument. The data are sourced from official transcripts and video recordings of the speech published by CNN Indonesia (2026) and cross referenced with the official transcript from the Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia.  The analysis results show that the bald on record impoliteness strategy dominates through direct criticism without mitigation and explicit commands, while positive impoliteness is present through utterances that publicly belittle the competence of regional officials.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and meanings found in the translation of the Tanah Lot tourism brochure from Indonesian into English by applying Larson’s (1988) theory of form-based and meaning-based translation and Leech’s (1981) theory of the seven types of meaning. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, using the bilingual Tanah Lot tourism brochure as the primary data source. The data were collected through document analysis and classified according to translation forms and meaning types. The findings reveal two translation forms in the brochure: form-based translation and meaning-based translation. Four data were identified as form-based translation, while seven data were categorized as meaning-based translation. Form-based translation was mainly used for proper names, locational descriptions, operational information, and institutional labels, whereas meaning-based translation was applied to culturally and spiritually significant expressions. The analysis also shows that conceptual meaning is the most dominant type of meaning, followed by connotative, social, affective, reflected, and collocative meanings. The study concludes that meaning-based translation is more effective in conveying cultural concepts and maintaining naturalness, while form-based translation is suitable for preserving factual information in tourism texts.

Abstract

Language is considered a vital instrument in shaping global public perception regarding environmental crises in the digital era. While communication studies are common, the exploration of global environmental issues in official news podcasts remains limited, particularly concerning the discrepancy between government rhetoric and international media representation. The objective of this study is to examine the representation of Bali’s waste crisis in the BBC podcast “Can Bali really go waste-free by 2027?”. A qualitative approach is employed, using the SPEAKING model to investigate the communication situation and Teun A. Van Dijk’s textual analysis to examine macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure levels. Data are collected via non-participant observation and digital documentation. Through the SPEAKING model, it is evident that the BBC intentionally arranged the communication situation to contrast Bali’s iconic “paradise” image with systemic waste management failures, creating a serious and skeptical atmosphere. Furthermore, through textual analysis, the strategic use of critical lexicons such as “ambitious” and “pessimistic,” alongside powerful metaphors like “mountain of trash,” is identified to frame the crisis as a global emergency. These combined findings successfully demonstrate how a skeptical narrative is constructed toward government targets. It is concluded that the framing of environmental issues by international media significantly influences world perception in the digital era.

Abstract

Landorundun is an oral folklore of the Torajan community in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and is regarded as one of the region’s most significant traditional narratives. The story recounts the quest of Bendurana, crown prince of the Kingdom of Bone, who journeys to Tana Toraja after discovering a strand of Landorundun’s luminous hair carried to the sea. Guided by supernatural swallows, engaged in londe (traditional poetic exchanges), and aided by a magical mango tree stratagem, Bendurana ultimately secures marriage with Landorundun and establishes a diplomatic alliance between Toraja and Bone. This study examines the narrative structure of Landorundun using Vladimir Propp’s thirty-one narrative functions to identify its morphological pattern and to explore the relationship between universal folktale structure and culturally specific Torajan traditions. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyses the written transcription of the folklore through documentation and structural narrative analysis based on Propp’s morphological framework. The findings reveal that the narrative contains twenty-one of Propp’s thirty-one functions, arranged in a sequence consistent with the Proppian model. At the same time, these functions are realised through distinctively Torajan cultural forms, including londe as a test of social competence, the authority of family and noble hierarchy, and the Basse alliance as a symbol of inter-community solidarity. These findings demonstrate both the cross-cultural applicability of Propp’s morphological theory and the importance of local cultural contexts in shaping narrative expression within Indonesian oral tradition.
