Abstract

The film Avatar The Way of Water contains the use of sign language in communication which is interesting for researchers to conduct research with the aim of analyzing the meaning of sign language among the Metkayina tribe and with the Tulkun sea animal using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic method. The results of the study found that there are meanings of discrimination and cultural diversity due to the lack of understanding of sign language as a migrant tribe, as well as cooperation when hunting in the water by fellow nations in the Metkayina tribe. Other meanings found in this film are requests for help, friendship, and joking as closeness, gratitude, affirmation of friendship, care, trust, as well as greetings and exchanging news through spiritual connections when the Metkayina tribe communicates with Tulkun. The conclusion of this study is that there are 7 signifiers and signifieds, 5 forms and content, 2 langue and parole relationships, 2 synchronic and diachronic relationships, and 3 syntagmatic and associative relationships in sign language communication among the Metkayina tribe as well as 5 nonverbal movements as signifiers and signifieds, 6 gestures as form and content, 2 langue and parole relationships, 2 synchronic and diachronic relationships, and 3 syntagmatic and associative relationships when the Metkayina tribe communicates with the sea animal Tulkun. Researchers hope that further research can reveal the meaning of the use of sign language not only in films but in everyday life.

Abstract

This study compares the ethical and epistemological standards of digital journalism as articulated in legal frameworks, professional codes, and public policies in Indonesia, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Using a descriptive qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm, it conducts a comparative analysis of relevant legislation, online media guidelines, and journalist safety policies in the three countries. The findings identify three distinct models. Indonesia advances an editorial-ethics model emphasizing verification, correction, the right of reply, and the separation of news and advertising, yet largely neglecting algorithmic power. Australia develops a democracy-news economy model that defines news as essential to democratic participation and regulates bargaining relations between news organizations and platform companies. The United Kingdom establishes a regulatory-protection model that grants special status and procedural safeguards to journalistic content, while strengthening protections for journalists within an online safety regime. The study concludes that renewing the ethical and epistemological foundations of digital journalism requires closer alignment among professional ethics, public policy, and platform regulation to sustain journalism’s credibility as an epistemic authority. It calls for intensified collaboration among policymakers, media organizations, regulators, and journalism educators to address datafication, algorithmic opacity, and journalist safety in future regulatory reforms.

Abstract

Abstract This study explores and analyzes communication practices within the Wiaha Manu ritual of the indigenous Kodi community in Southwest Sumba Regency. This sacred ritual bridges the interaction between humans and their ancestors (Marapu) through a unique medium: chicken intestines. Using a qualitative approach and the ethnography of communication method, the study examines the ritual's communicative structure through Dell Hymes's SPEAKING model framework. Data were collected through participatory field observation, in-depth interviews with Ratos (traditional leaders), and analysis of documents related to Sumbanese cosmology. Findings reveal the Wiaha Manu ritual to be a complex transcendental communication system in which the Rato plays a central role as a symbolic mediator with sole interpretive authority. Analysis using the SPEAKING model reveals that the effectiveness of this ritual communication depends heavily on the strict sequence of actions, the solemn sacred tone and the use of the chicken's body as a 'biological text', which is translated into social instructions. Conceptually, this ritual transcends the spiritual dimension, serving as a strategic means of constructing collective meaning, strengthening social cohesion through customary consensus and preserving the cultural identity of the Kodi community in the face of changing times. This study concludes that the Wiaha Manu ritual is a form of communication that perpetuates traditional values while legitimising social power structures within indigenous Sumbanese society. Keywords: communication; ethnography; wiaha manu; kodi society; transcendental communication; speaking model. Kata-kata kunci: Etnografi komunikasi; wiaha manu; masyarakat kodi; komunikasi transendental; model speaking.
