Abstract

Mathematical creative thinking ability and self-efficacy are a combination of abilities students need to have when studying mathematics. Mathematical learning is expected to improve both abilities. However, teachers still use conventional learning such as direct teaching, which results in a low increase in students' mathematical creative thinking abilities and self-efficacy. So we need alternative student-centred learning and teachers as facilitators who provide scaffolding. The study was conducted to obtain a description of the discovery learning process with scaffolding which aims to improve the ability to think creatively and self-efficacy. Two quasi-experimental designs with three class groups were used: The Matching-only Pretest-posttest Control Group Design was used to measure mathematical creative thinking skills, and The Matching-only Posttest-only Control Group Design was used to measure the self-efficacy scale. Based on the results of one-way ANOVA, the mathematical creative thinking ability of students discovery learning with scaffolding is better than discovery learning and conventional learning. Likewise, this happens to 'self-efficacy, based on the one-way ANOVA that students' self-efficacy of discovery learning with scaffolding is better than discovery learning and conventional learning. The learning process of discovery learning with scaffolding has a positive impact on the improvement of mathematical creative thinking abilities and self-efficacy

Abstract

Fraction concepts represent one of the most challenging mathematical domains in elementary education, with persistent international difficulties in student comprehension despite their fundamental importance for advanced mathematical proficiency. Traditional instructional methods emphasizing rote memorization have consistently demonstrated limitations in fostering deep conceptual understanding. This study investigated the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing elementary students' fraction understanding compared to conventional teaching approaches. A quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control groups was employed, involving 38 elementary students from nine schools. The experimental group (n=16) received PBL instruction featuring authentic, real-world fraction problems requiring collaborative solution strategies, while the control group (n=22) participated in traditional direct instruction. Data collection utilized pre-test and post-test assessments measuring conceptual and procedural fraction understanding, structured classroom observations documenting engagement and learning behaviors, and student feedback questionnaires capturing motivation and confidence levels. The experimental group demonstrated substantial improvement with a mean increase of 33.25 points (Cohen's d = 3.47), while the control group showed minimal gains (7.78 points, Cohen's d = 0.91). Paired-sample t-tests confirmed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) favoring the experimental group. Qualitative analysis revealed enhanced collaborative learning, mathematical discourse, and problem-solving confidence among PBL participants. Student motivation scores were significantly higher in the experimental group (M = 4.31 vs. 3.18). Results provide robust empirical evidence supporting PBL's superiority over traditional methods for fraction instruction. The findings validate constructivist learning principles and demonstrate that authentic problem-solving contexts facilitate deeper conceptual understanding, multiple representational thinking, and sustained student engagement, addressing persistent challenges in elementary mathematics education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ critical thinking skills in solving trigonometry problems using a qualitative case study approach. The participants were 29 twelfth-grade students from SMAN 1 Kadipaten. Data were collected through classroom observations, students’ written responses, and semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using NVivo 14 software. The findings revealed that only a small proportion of students demonstrated adequate critical thinking indicators, particularly in the areas of interpretation, analysis, inference, and evaluation. While 69% of students were able to construct appropriate mathematical models, only 31% correctly applied relevant formulas, and merely 3% succeeded in accurately stating the final answers. The interview results supported the analysis, indicating that many students faced conceptual misunderstandings, procedural difficulties, and lacked reflective thinking in validating their solutions. These findings underscore the need to enhance students’ critical thinking skills through visual learning tools, reflective discussions, and contextual problem-solving exercises. This study contributes to the development of diagnostic assessment instruments and the design of adaptive instructional strategies in mathematics education, particularly for complex topics such as trigonometry.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of the guided inquiry method on students' adaptive reasoning ability at the secondary school level. With a quasi-experimental design using a Nonequivalent Control Group Design, class X IPS 1 applied guided discovery, while class X IPS 2 was the control with conventional learning. Adaptive reasoning ability data were obtained from pretests and posttests, then tested using paired-sample T-test. The results showed a significant increase in the experimental class (N-Gain: 0.64) compared to the control class (N-Gain: 0.55), with a significance value of 0.009. This finding indicates that the application of the guided discovery method has a more significant positive impact on improving students' adaptive reasoning ability when compared to conventional learning. The implication is that teachers and education practitioners can consider using this method to improve the quality of mathematics learning at the secondary school level. Further studies could explore specific aspects of this method and its long-term impact on student achievement

Abstract

This study investigates junior secondary students’ epistemological obstacles to learning algebraic operations through a praxeological framework grounded in the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), with Didactical Design Research (DDR) as the conceptual orientation. Diagnostic algebra tasks and semi-structured interviews were administered to six seventh-grade students in Indonesia to examine their algebraic techniques and justifications. Students’ written and verbal responses were analysed by reconstructing tasks (T), techniques (τ), technologies (θ), and theories (Θ). The findings reveal that students generally exhibit procedural fluency in routine tasks, such as simplification and distributive expansion. However, substantial epistemological obstacles arise in tasks that require justification, relational interpretations of equality, variable generalisation, and contextual transfer. These obstacles are characterised by a misalignment between students’ correct techniques and weak or absent justificatory discourse, indicating that procedural correctness does not consistently reflect conceptual understanding. This study contributes to mathematics education by offering a fine-grained praxeological analysis that makes epistemological obstacles often overlooked in error-based analyses visible. By distinguishing students’ actions from their justifications, the study clarifies the structural nature of algebraic difficulties and identifies instructional directions that emphasise relational equality, explicit justification, and stable conceptions of variables to support deeper structural and theoretical understanding of algebra.
