Abstract

This study aims to examine the word “Ma” in the Holy Qur’an, focusing on its occurrences in Surah Al-Ankabut from a semantic perspective. The study stems from the problem of the multifunctionality of this word and the variation of its meanings depending on the grammatical, syntactic, and rhetorical context, as its usage is not limited to interrogation or negation as commonly understood but varies among relative (mawsulah), negative (nafiyah), restrictive/preventive (kaffah), infinitive (masdariyyah), and other semantic functions. The study adopted a qualitative descriptive-analytical method by collecting data through library research, referencing the Qur’anic text, authoritative books of tafsir, and relevant linguistic references, followed by a contextual semantic analysis. The study concluded that the word “ma” occurred thirty-two times in the Surah, distributed across four main types, with notable diversity in its semantic implications, such as specification, emphasis, generalization, refutation, restriction, and indication of falsehood. The results showed that “ma” is not merely a grammatical tool but an effective semantic element that contributes to constructing and directing Qur’anic meaning, reflecting the precision of lexical choice in the Qur’anic text. This study enhances the semantic understanding of the verses and expands the analysis of multifunctional words in Qur’anic studies.

Abstract

Reading Ibn Jinnī’s Al-Khaṣāʾiṣ poses a pedagogical problem that cannot be reduced to lexical decoding or grammatical parsing: readers must also recognize disciplinary concepts, determine the evidential status of textual materials, and reconstruct how linguistic judgments are justified. This study reconstructs an adaptive scaffolding framework for such reading by integrating textual analysis with Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), and scaffolding theory. A qualitative conceptual-textual design was employed, using library/document research as the data-source strategy, qualitative content analysis as the analytical method, and an adapted educational-reconstruction procedure for model development. The bounded analytical corpus comprised three theoretically selected chapter clusters representing contrasting epistemic demands: competing grammatical explanations and ʿillah; non-local cross-reference in the discussion of language origins; and the use of poetic shāhid and qiyās in Bāb fī al-Istiḥsān. Analysis traced each textual feature through complexity category, anticipated learner demand, pedagogical mediation need, and scaffolding response. Three interacting dimensions were identified terminological-conceptual, textual, and argumentative which together constitute textual-epistemic complexity. On this basis, the study proposes a four-part adaptive architecture: diagnostic identification of textual-epistemic complexity; mediation through conceptual orientation, guided reading, collaborative reconstruction, and argument reconstruction; adaptive fading or reactivation according to the learner–complexity gap; and transfer of epistemic responsibility toward independent linguistic analysis. The framework conceptualizes adaptive scaffolding as epistemic mediation by specifying both the form and intensity of support in relation to disciplinary knowledge practices. Because no learners or classroom implementation were involved, the model remains a conceptual proposition requiring expert and empirical validation.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of metacognitive scaffolding strategies within Qiro'ah Mukatsafah (intensive reading) instruction to enhance Arabic reading comprehension among Indonesian university students. While intensive reading has long been recognized as a foundational approach in Arabic language pedagogy, existing scholarship has insufficiently addressed the cognitive and metacognitive dimensions that mediate reading comprehension outcomes. Employing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, this research collected quantitative data from 186 undergraduate students across four Indonesian Islamic higher education institutions through pre-test and post-test instruments measuring reading comprehension and metacognitive awareness, complemented by semi-structured interviews with 24 purposively selected participants. The quantitative findings demonstrated statistically significant improvements in reading comprehension scores (t = 7.842, p < .001, Cohen's d = 0.94) following the metacognitive scaffolding intervention embedded within Qiro'ah Mukatsafah instruction. Qualitative data revealed three emergent themes: cognitive restructuring through textual deconstruction, self-regulated monitoring during intensive reading tasks, and socially mediated comprehension through collaborative annotation. The study contributes a theoretically grounded pedagogical framework termed Metacognitive Intensive Reading Architecture (MIRA) that reconceptualizes Qiro'ah Mukatsafah beyond mechanical decoding toward strategic, self-regulated reading engagement. Implications for Arabic language curriculum design in higher education contexts and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract

This study discusses the integration of the tafsir and ta’wil approaches in the compilation of the mufradāt Al-Qur’an found in Mu‘jam Alfāẓ al-Qur’ān al-Karīm. Using a descriptive qualitative approach based on semantic and philosophical analysis, this study traces how the mu‘jam not only presents the lexical meanings of words but also presents layers of contextual, metaphorical, and spiritual meaning. The results of the analysis show that there is a methodological tendency that combines the textual tafsir approach (as inherited by al-Ṭabarī and al-Qurṭubī) with the Sufi ta’wil approach (as pioneered by Ibn ʿArabī and al-Ghazālī). This integration enriches the understanding of the mufradāt Al-Qur’an by making the mu‘jam an interpretive medium responsive to the dynamics of contemporary meaning. This study also reveals the contribution of the mu‘jam as a source of vocabulary-based thematic tafsir that bridges classical texts with the needs of modern readers.

Abstract

Bayt al-Hikmah (the House of Wisdom), established during the Abbasid Caliphate in ninth-century Baghdad, stands as one of the most remarkable intellectual institutions in human history. Its legacy of cross-cultural translation, interdisciplinary scholarship, and open knowledge exchange continues to resonate with contemporary aspirations for global knowledge democratization. Yet, as the world transitions into an increasingly digital paradigm, pressing questions emerge regarding how the philosophical foundations and operational principles of Bayt al-Hikmah might be reimagined to address the challenges and opportunities of twenty-first-century knowledge management. This study employs a critical literature review methodology, drawing upon scholarly sources indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, and JSTOR, to examine the intersection of classical Islamic intellectual traditions and modern digital humanities. Through thematic analysis grounded in knowledge management theory, this article identifies three principal challenges confronting the digital transformation of heritage knowledge systems: the preservation of material integrity during digitization, infrastructural deficits across institutions in the Muslim-majority world, and persistent disparities in global accessibility to digitized archives. In response, the study proposes a tri-pillar conceptual framework—encompassing digital preservation, global accessibility, and interdisciplinary collaboration—designed to guide the transformation of Bayt al-Hikmah’s enduring principles into a viable digital knowledge ecosystem. The findings suggest that a synthesis of classical epistemological values with emergent technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and semantic metadata offers a promising pathway for revitalizing heritage scholarship in the digital age. This article contributes to the nascent but growing body of literature at the nexus of Islamic intellectual history and digital humanities, offering both theoretical insights and practical recommendations for researchers, policymakers, and cultural heritage institutions.
