Abstract

Blumea balsamifera is one of the Asteraceae family known as Sembung leaves. B. balsamifera is often used in traditional medicine. This study aims to evaluate the potential biological activity of Sembung leaves (Blumea balsamifera) through the determination of total tannin levels and toxicity tests using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. Leaf extraction is carried out by the maceration method using methanol solvent. The total tannin content was determined using the colorimetric method with the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, resulting in a tannin content of 358.04 mg TAE/g of extract. The toxicity test showed an LC50 value of 56.58 μg/mL, which indicated that the methanol extract of B. balsamifera leaves was toxic. These results suggest that the high tannin content correlates with the toxicity properties of the extract, which has the potential to be further developed as a therapeutic agent.

Abstract

Ageratum conyzoides L. and Adenostemma lavenia are known to contain bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic properties. This study aimed to determine the phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as the toxicity of leaf extracts from both species against Artemia salina larvae. The extraction process was carried out using methanol as a solvent. Phenolic content was measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, while flavonoid content was determined through a colorimetric method using aluminum chloride (AlCl₃) reagent. Toxicity testing was performed using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The results showed that the methanolic extract of Ageratum conyzoides L. contained 173 mg GAE/g extract of phenolics and 55.45 mg QE/g extract of flavonoids, which were higher than those found in Adenostemma lavenia, with 73.8 mg GAE/g extract of phenolics and 6.33 mg QE/g extract of flavonoids. Toxicity test results analyzed using probit analysis revealed LC₅₀ values of 43.17 μg/mL for Ageratum conyzoides L. extract and 208.07 μg/mL for Adenostemma lavenia extract, indicating that both are toxic. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Ageratum conyzoides L. possesses greater potential as a source of bioactive compounds, as indicated by its higher toxic activity. Both plants are considered worthy of further investigation as potential anticancer agents.

Abstract

Water is the second most important element for life after air. Water is a clear liquid, odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Water is a basic need for living creatures, especially drinking water. One way of processing drinking water is by freezing it into ice. Ice cubes are a food that is widely known and is usually considered safe for consumption. Coliform bacteria serve as a general marker of contamination in food and water. Coliform bacteria found in the human body can cause several diseases, including diarrhea. The aim of this research was to confirm the presence of coliform bacteria, measure the level of contamination, and identify the specific type of coliform bacteria that contaminated crystal ice from three ice producers located in Langsa City. This research is descriptive in character. Ice crystal samples were tested using the Most Probable Number (MPN) approach. Furthermore, bacteria were identified through microscopic analysis using the gram staining method and biochemical testing, especially IMViC. Each ice crystal sample showed coliform contamination, exceeding the precautionary limits set out in Minister of Health Regulation number 492 of 2010. The highest amount of contamination was 6 MPN/100mL and the lowest amount of contamination was 4 MPN/100 mL. There were 2 types of coliform bacteria found in this study, namely: Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aeroganes.
