Abstract

The Sexual Violence Crime Bill (RUU TPKS) was ratified by Indonesia's Parliament (DPR RI) on April 12, 2022, generating significant public interest that peaked between April 10-16, 2022. Online media outlets capitalized on this momentum. This study examines news framing by three media outlets using framing theory and ekspression concepts through qualitative framing analysis. Results show that during April 10-16, 2022, Suaramerdeka.com published 3 articles on RUU TPKS, while Kompas.com published 35 and CNNIndonesia.com published 18. Kompas.com's extensive coverage reflects its business-oriented approach, engaging in commodification practices for political-economic interests. Nevertheless, Kompas.com maintained balanced reporting with sufficient moral content to educate the public about protection for sexual crime victims, unlike CNNIndonesia.com and Suaramerdeka.com, whose coverage lacked moral framing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of social cognition in the case of public deception committed by Ratna Sarumpaet in 2018. Using a qualitative case study approach and a social cognition theoretical framework, this study examines how the public forms perceptions, makes social attributions, and how cognitive schemas and biases play a role in responding to narratives presented by public actors. The analysis reveals that public acceptance of false narratives is significantly influenced by existing social schemas, confirmation bias, representative heuristics, and social identity factors. This case underscores the importance of understanding social cognition processes in the digital age, where information spreads rapidly and perceptions are shaped within social interaction spaces saturated with emotions and ideological interests. This study recommends strengthening media literacy and developing critical awareness as preventive measures against disinformation and public opinion manipulation.

Abstract

This study presents a phenomenological portrait of the ‘Silver Man’ within Jakarta's urban social landscape using Anthony Giddens’s structuration analysis framework. Silver Man, as social actors in public space, inherently embodies the duality of structure and agency. This research explores how social structures—such as urban political-economic conditions, stigma, and public norms—simultaneously shape and are shaped by the agency of individual Silver Man individuals. Through thematic analysis of everyday practices and subjective experiences, it is found that they are not merely passive objects of structural pressures (poverty, the need for survival), but also active agents who reflexively negotiate these conditions. Their agency is evident in their adaptation strategies, expressions of unique identities, and reconfigurations of the meaning of social space. The results underscore the dialectical nature between the available ‘rules and resources’ (structure) and the ‘social practices’ (agency) they engage in, demonstrating that structure and agency are interconnected and inseparable in shaping the social reality of Silver Man. This study provides a richer understanding of the city's urban social dynamics and contributes to structuration theory in explaining the complexity of marginalization amidst Jakarta's modernizing urban space.

Abstract

This research examines the communication strategies implemented by PT DMGP in dealing with community rejection of their geothermal project on Mount Pangrango using a relational dialectic theory approach. The constructivist paradigm is used to understand that PT DMGP builds shared perceptions and understanding through dynamic interactions with stakeholders. This study uses qualitative methods with in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including company representatives, local government, police, military and community. Analysis of PT DMGP's corporate communications (corcom) shows that their strategy consists of elements of contradiction, movement, totality and praxis which have proven effective in creating constructive dialogue. Contradictory strategy in the form of an information strategy that successfully manages the tension between transparency (openness) and the protection of sensitive information (closedness) by providing information through online portals, periodic reports and open dialogue forums. The strategic movement, in the form of a persuasive strategy, balances predictable information (predictability) and interesting new information (novelty) through regular meetings, thereby increasing community understanding and support for the project. Stakeholder mapping is also used to identify the needs and roles of each stakeholder, so that communication strategies can be adjusted to their expectations. The strategy of totality and praxis, through dialogue strategies, maintains certainty and brings uncertainty closer by involving a neutral third party for mediation, ensuring fair and transparent communication. The research results show that this communication strategy strengthens relationships between companies and communities and creates a solid foundation for the success of geothermal projects

Abstract

In the digital age, adolescents in DKI Jakarta Province, Indonesia, are experiencing a transformative shift in their lifestyles, characterized by the pervasive influence of digital technologies. This research aimed to comprehensively investigate the multifaceted impact of digital lifestyles on the health of adolescents, with a specific focus on social media abuse, physical inactivity, and psychological well-being. Through a mixed-methods approach encompassing surveys and interviews, data from 500 adolescents were collected and analyzed. The findings revealed that digital lifestyles have become integral to the lives of adolescents, with social media use averaging 3.5 hours per day. However, this extensive use has led to concerning issues, including cyberbullying experiences among 18% of participants and feelings of inadequacy in 42% due to social comparison. Additionally, physical inactivity was prevalent, with only 38% meeting the recommended daily physical activity guidelines. These behaviors were associated with various health implications, such as poor sleep quality and eye strain. Psychological well-being also bore the brunt of digital lifestyles, with 32% of adolescents reporting symptoms of anxiety and 28% experiencing symptoms of depression. Despite these challenges, self-esteem levels remained moderate to high for most participants.
