Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types of simple sentences and describe the constituent structure of the process of transformation used in simple sentence found in Jakarta Website’s article. The research is descriptive qualitative research. The data used in this research were taken from online news articles published on the Jakarta Post website. The sentences were taken from the articles posted on 8 July 2022 entitled “G20 FMM: Opening Speech of Indonesian Foreign Minister”. The analysis was oriented to syntactic analysis. In analyzing the data, the types of simple sentence were identified and after that described the process of transformation of simple sentence used in Jakarta Post News Website’s Article. The result of the study shows there are the types of simple sentence found in Jakarta Post News Website’s Article. Simple sentence structure types were identified in the data, which was then categorized, displayed, and described. The results of the tenses studied are 10 (ten) sentences in a data source that belongs to simple sentence structures.

Abstract

Nowadays, the ability to use two languages ​​in communication is an interesting phenomenon because it involves some language mixing, also known as code mixing. This study describes the types of code mixing and the reason for code mixing in Nessie Judge’s YouTube channel videos, using theory from Hoffman (1991). This study adopts a qualitative descriptive method. There are six videos from Nessie Judge’s YouTube channel, from May 2018 to August 2021, were chosen for data analysis. There are four steps in the data collection process. The first is finding Nessie Judge’s YouTube channel, the second is watching her videos, the third is taking note of the phrase Nessie used that contained code mixing, and the fourth step is classifying the data regarding the causes and forms of code mixing. The results show that two types: intra-sentential and intra-lexical. However, for the type involved, the writers did not find a change in pronunciation. As for the reasons, only three were found: talking about a particular topic, repetition used for clarification, and the intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutors. Besides that, the dominant data found is the intra-sentential type, with a total of 52 data, and the dominant reason used is talking about a particular topic, with a total of 45 data. It is anticipated that this work will advance and build a theoretical viewpoint on linguistics, particularly in the research of code-mixing. Additionally, this research may aid in sociolinguistic advancement, particularly in language studies and theories.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study discusses language function and the expression of language function that aimsto determine the types of language function used by the therapist in Ritual Spa RamayanaResort & Spa, and to analyze the types of language function expression. The study utilizes astudy by Tillit and Bruder (1985) as the referenced theory to answer the research problems.The data source is taken from the conversation between the therapists and guests from escortingthe guest until giving the ginger tea after doing the treatment. The data was collected by usingthe observation method, using a voice recorder and note-taking techniques. The transcripts ofvoice recording were classified into the types of language functions and expression of languagefunction. The data analysis employs the qualitative method. There are 24 data points fromtwelve conversations. The data was classified into six types of language function and threetypes of expression. The types of language functions found in the conversations includeopening, pre-closing, closing, introduction and address system, invitation, thanking people andreplying to thanks, gaining attention and interrupting, as well as agreeing and disagreeing. Theexpressions include formal, informal, and neutral forms of expression. The data of languagefunction and expression was classified and presented in tables and described narratively indeeper analysis related to the theory.Keywords: language function, expression, conversationABSTRAKPenelitian ini berkaitan dengan fungsi bahasa dan ekspresi fungsi bahasa yangbertujuan (1) Untuk mengetahui jenis fungsi bahasa yang digunakan oleh terapis di Ritual SpaRamayana Resort & Spa dan (2) Untuk menganalisis jenis-jenis ekspresi fungsi bahasa yangdigunakan oleh terapis di Ritual Spa Ramayana Resort & Spa. Teori yang digunakan untukmenjawab masalah penelitian ini dituju oleh Tillit dan Bruder (1985) dengan sebuah bukuberjudul Speaking Naturally. Sumber data penelitian ini diambil dari percakapan terapisdengan tamu sambil mengantar tamu sampai memberikan teh jahe setelah melakukanperawatan. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode observasi. Oleh karena itu, datadirekam oleh perekam suara dan mencatat percakapan. Transkrip rekaman suaradiklasifikasikan ke dalam jenis fungsi bahasa dan ekspresi fungsi bahasa. Metode kualitatifadalah digunakan dalam menganalisis data. Ada dua puluh empat data yang ditemukan dalamdua belas percakapan terapis dengan tamu di Spa. Dua puluh empat data diklasifikasikan kedalam enam jenis fungsi bahasa dan tiga jenis ekspresi. Jenis-jenis fungsi bahasa ditemukandalam percakapan terapis dan tamu membuka, pra-penutupan, penutupan, pengenalan dansistem alamat, undangan, berterima kasih kepada orang-orang dan membalas terima kasih,mendapatkan perhatian dan gangguan orang, setuju dan tidak setuju. Ekspresi yang ditemukan adalah ekspresi formal, informal, dan netral. Data fungsi dan ekspresi bahasa diklasifikasikandan disajikan dalam bentuk tabel dan dideskripsikan secara naratif dalam analisis yang lebihmendalam terkait dengan teori.Kata kunci: fungsi Bahasa, ekspresi, percakapan

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study entitled Positive Politeness Strategies Used by the Guest in TripAdvisor Review ofPrime Plaza Suites Sanur Bali. This study aims to identify the use of positive politenessstrategies by the guest in TripAdvisor review of Prime Plaza Suites Sanur Bali. This studyanalyzed qualitatively used the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987) about the types ofpoliteness strategies. The findings showed that from 15 sub-strategy in positive politenessstrategies according to theory there are only 6 strategies used by the guest in giving review theyare (1) exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with H), (2) Intensify Interest to H, (3) SeekAgreement, (4) Offer Promise, (5) Give or Ask Reason and (6) Give Gifts to H Goods,Sympathy, Understanding, Cooperation. Penelitian ini dianalisissecara kualitatif menggunakan teori dari Brown dan Levinson (1987) tentang strategikesantunan berbahasa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari 15 strategi kesantunanpositif sesuai dengan teori, hanya 6 strategi yang digunakan oleh tamu dalam membuat ulasan,diantaranya (1) melebihkan dalam memberikan komentar atau pujian (exaggerate) (2)menegaskan (Intensify Interest to H), (3) mengupayakan kesepakatan (Seek Agreement), (4)menawarkan, berjanji (Offer Promise), (5) memberi atau meminta alasan (Give or Ask Reasondan (6) memberi hadiah kepada penutur (Give Gifts to H Goods, Sympathy, Understanding,Cooperation). Abstract

ABSTRACTBased on Grice's theory (1989), cooperative principle makes communication becomeunderstandable so that the meaning of the utterances can be well received by the interlocutor.However, in daily lives, this principle is often floated by the speaker and interlocutor becausesometimes the speakers want the interlocutor to get the meaning of the utterances that cannotbe expressed explicitly. This violation is known as floating maxim. This study aims to explorethe functions of floating maxims that occurs in conversations between characters in the movieentitled The Hunger Games. The function refers to the speech act theory, in which Searle(1979) states that there are five points of speech acts, namely functioning as representative,directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. The methods used in this research areobservational and qualitative methods, by watching movies and reading the script of themovie’s conversation while taking notes the conversations that contain floating maxim,classifying the functions of floating maxim occurred by Searle's (1979) theory and supportedby theory of context situation by Halliday (1985). The results of this study indicate that thereare 30 floating maxim obtained, 19 data (63%) have function as representatives, five data(17%) have function as directive statements, one data (3%) has function as commissivestatements and 5 data (17%) have functions as expressive utterance.Keywords: Floating maxim, function, movieABSTRAKDalam teori Grice (1989), prinsip kerjasama dalam sebuah komunikasi akan membantukomunikasi menjadi lancar dan dimengerti oleh penutur dan mitra tutur sehingga maksud dariujaran dapat diterima baik. Namun dalam kesehariannya, prinsip ini sering dilanggar olehmitra tutur karena penutur ingin mitra tutur menangkap maksud ujarannya yang tidak bisadiutarakan secara eksplisit. Pelanggaran ini dikenal dengan pelanggaran maksim. Penelitianini bertujuan untuk mencari fungsi pelanggaran maksim yang terjadi dalam percakapan antartokoh pada film berjudul The Hunger Games. Fungsi yang dimaksud mengacu pada teoritindak tutur, yang mana Searle (1979) menyebutkan ada lima poin tindak tutur yakni berfungsisebagai representatif, direktif, komisif, ekspresif dan deklaratif. Metode yang digunakan dalampenelitian ini adalah metode observasi dan kualitatif, dengan cara menonton film danmencatat percakapan yang mengandung pelanggaran maksim, mengklasifikasikan fungsipelanggaran maksim dengan teori Searle (1979) yang didukung dengan teori konteks olehHalliday (1985). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan dari 30 pelanggaran maksim yangdiperoleh, terdapat 19 data (63%) berfungsi sebagai representatif, lima data (17%) berfungsisebagai pernyataan direktif, satu data (3%) berfungsi sebagai pernyataan komisif dan 5 data(17%) berfungsi sebaai pernyataan ekspresif.Kata kunci: Pelanggaran maksim, fungsi, film

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aimed to analyze figurative language in Lady Gaga song of Chromatica album thatwere released in 2020. There are two problems that are formulated in this study, they are: (1) whatkinds of figurative language found in Lady Gaga song lyrics, (2) what are the meaning of figurativelanguage found in Lady Gaga song lyrics. There are two theories used in this research; the firsttheory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963:367) that is used to identify the kinds offigurative language and the second theory is the theory of meaning which supported by Leech(1974) to analyze the meaning. The method used in collecting the data was done by formal andinformal method. The writer collected the data by downloading the song, listening carefully,reading the scripts, underling, and classifying the lyrics which are contain the kinds of figurativelanguage. The method of analyzing data was identifying, analyzing and making conclusions. Thefrequency of each kinds of figurative language was 18,18% contained simile type, 40,90%contained hyperbole type, 13,63% contained metaphor type, 4,54% contained personification type,4,54% contained paradox type, 9,90% contained metonymy type and 9,90% contained allusiontype. The result of meaning in Lady Gaga was conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, affectivemeaning and reflected meaning. Ada dua masalah yang dirumuskan dalam penelitianini, yaitu: (1) jenis bahasa kiasan apa yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu Lady Gaga, ( 2) apa artibahasa kiasan yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu Lady Gaga. Ada dua teori yang digunakan dalampenelitian ini; teori pertama dikemukakan oleh Knickerbocker dan Reninger (1963:367) yangdigunakan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis bahasa kiasan dan teori kedua adalah teori maknayang didukung oleh Leech (1974) untuk menganalisis makna. Metode yang digunakan dalampengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode formal dan informal. Penulis mengumpulkan datadengan mengunduh lagu, mendengarkan dengan seksama, membaca skrip, menggarisbawahi, danmengklasifikasikan lirik yang mengandung jenis bahasa kiasan. Metode analisis data adalahmengidentifikasi, menganalisis dan membuat kesimpulan. Frekuensi masing-masing jenis majasadalah 18,18% mengandung tipe simile, 40,90% mengandung tipe hiperbola, 13,63%mengandung tipe metafora, 4,54% mengandung tipe personifikasi, 4,54% mengandung tipeparadoks, 9 ,90% mengandung tipe metonimi dan 9,90% mengandung tipe kiasan. Hasil maknadalam Lady Gaga adalah makna konseptual, makna konotatif, makna afektif dan makna refleksi.Dapat disimpulkan bahwa bahasa kiasan memiliki peran penting dalam menciptakan lirik laguKata kunci: Bahasa kiasan, lirik dan makna lagu

Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the type of directive illocutionary act spoken by all characters in the commuter film. The theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985) on the type of directive illocutionary act is used in analyzing data findings. Halliday's theory (1985) of context of situation also supports the analysis in this study. Data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method.  There are 91 utterance of directive illocutionary act found in the movie. The most dominant type is commanding act with 44 data (49%) occurrences followed by asking act with 30 data (33%) occurrences. The last type is ordering act with 17 data (18%) occurrences. The movie that used as the data source is a thriller-themed movie about the main actor who works on a mission given by someone. Thus, this movie contained many types of command, ask and order act.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the basic English skills of elementary school students through a visual-based learning method. The teaching was carried out over 16 sessions at SDN 2 Jehem, Bangli, involving 27 students from a combined class of grades 4, 5, and 6. The materials taught included the Alphabet, Vegetables, Introduce Self, Introduce Other, and Parts of the Body. The learning method utilized visual media such as flashcards, posters, PowerPoint presentations, and was supported by songs and educational games. The results of the program showed that visual-based English teaching successfully increased students’ interest in learning English. The success indicators of using visual media demonstrated strong outcomes, with an average test score of 80.2 and a student mastery level of 98.6%. Students showed high enthusiasm when learning the topics of Alphabet, Fruits and Vegetables, and Parts of the Body.

Abstract

This study concerns the types of Maxim Violation related to the language that consist in the dialogue of the Little movie. This study used the theory of maxim violation which was proposed by Paul Grice (1975). The method used a qualitative method by following the data with the observation through watching and analyzing the dialogue in characters’ utterances and also reading the dialogue repeatedly and taking notes in the process of analyzing the data. The analysis found the character’s utterances violate maxim types mostly conducted by the main participants or the character in the movie, where the total of data is 32 times of maxim violation. The highest is 11 data or 34,38% violation maxim of quality, followed by 10 data or 31,25% of violation maxim of quantity, 6 data or 18,75% violation of maxim relevance and lastly 5 data or 15, 62% maxim violation of manner

Abstract

The aims of this study to classified type of personification in All Things Bright and Beautiful selected songs and their meanings. The theory that is used for this research from Kennedy (1995:677) to analyze the type of personification from the lyrics in the songs, such as: Alligator Sky, Plant Life, Angels, The Real World which lyrics contain with personification in the lyrics. Meanwhile, to describe the meaning contained in the lyrics of the song, this research used theory meaning from Leech (1981:5-9) and used descriptive qualitative method based on context situation. In this study used a table to describe the classification of the data that were analyzed. After classifying the data according to the type of personification and the meanings obtained, it continued by concluding the meaning of lyrics in each selected song. There are several lyrics containing personification found, based on the theory from Kennedy (1995:677) but there were only found 4 types of meaning from 7 types meaning based on the theory of Leech (1981:5-9) they are affective meaning and reflected meaning.
