Abstract

This study dealt with persuasive strategies in @1000tenda Instagram Post. The objectives of this study were to describe and to find out the dominant technique and strategies of persuasive used in @1000Tenda Instagram Post. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected from @1000tenda Instagram Post. After the data analyzed, it was found out 6 types of persuasive techniques and 3 types of persuasive strategies used in @1000tenda Instagram Post. The most dominant persuasive techniques used was suggestion and the most dominant persuasive strategies used was phatos.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types and the dominant type of translation shift on verb phrases used in English-Indonesian translation of Surah Yaseen (Chapter 36). This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were the verb phrases in English-Indonesian translation of Surah Yaseen. The data were collected and analyzed by comparing, classifying, categorizing, describing, calculating, and displaying by using table. The result of this study found there were three types of translation shift on verb phrases in English-Indonesian translation of Surah Yaseen namely: class shift (51.25%), level shift (43.75%), and structure shift (5%). The most dominant type of translation shift used was the class shift.

Abstract

The objectives of the study were to describe the types of figurative language used in Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Part 2 Movie and to find out the dominant type of the figurative language used in the movie. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Part 2 Movie by analyzing the dialogues spoken by the actors/actress through its text transcribe. The analysis found out there were 6 types of figurative language used, namely simile 28 (28.57%), metaphor 27 (27.55%), hyperbole 20 (20.40%), idiom 13 (13.26%), personification 6 (6.12%), and proverb 4 (4.08%). The most dominant figurative language used was simile.

Abstract

This study dealt with the use of code mixing in Raditiya Dika’s Manusia Setengah Salmon and Kambing Jantan novels. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were collected from two novels by Raditiya Dika: Manusia Setengah Salmon and Kambing Jantan novels. The study’s findings showed that there were only two types of code mixing used in both novels of Manusia Setengah Salmon and Kambing Jantan. They were insertion and alternation types. In Manusia Setengah Salmon novel, insertion type was 95% and alternation type was 5%. While in Kambing Jantan novel, insertion type was 65% and alternation type was 35%. Thus, it can be concluded that insertion type was the dominant type of code mixing used in Manusia Setengah Salmon and in Kambing Jantan novel.

Abstract

This research dealt with politeness strategies of the Karonese Families in Deli Tua. The objective of this study was to describe types of politeness strategies of the Karonese Families. This research applied qualitative research design. The subjects were three of Karonese families who lived in Deli Tua. The subjects were divided into two groups; three subjects from parents and three subjects from children group. The instruments used to gain the data were observation and interview. There were two ways relationships that were observed; first, interaction parent to parent, second, interaction parent to child. The data were analyzed by using data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings showed that the Karonese families used two types of politeness strategies which were (1) bald on record strategy and (2) positive politeness strategy, both interactions; parent to parent and parent to child. They expressed their politeness strategies by using kinship forms and pronoun. There were three reasons why they used bald on record strategy as the dominant type; first, Social Distance (D) of the speaker and hearer, second, Power (P) between them, and third, the Rank of Imposition (R)

Abstract

This article elaborates with teach reading comprehension through Plot Relationships Chart Strategy. Plot Relationships Chart Strategy helps students identify the major parts of a story and improves their comprehension. Comprehension is the main goal in reading process. Reading Comprehension is a process of making sense of written ideas through meaningful interpretation and interaction with language. This strategy provides students with a chart to help them comprehend the relationship among characters, goals, problems, and solutions. The chart has four columns; the first column is for the name of the characters, the second column is for the goals of the characters, the third column is for the problems or challenges that the characters faced, and the last column is for the solution of the problems. At last, this strategy helps students comprehend what they have read

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the significant effect of the scramble method on students’ achievement in learning vocabulary. The experimental design was used as the research design. The population of this research was taken from the eighth-grade students of SMP Al Washliyah 8 Medan. There were 7 parallel classes with a total number of 231 students. Each class consisted of 33 students. The sample was taken by applying cluster random sampling with the lottery technique. Class VIII1 consisting of 33 students was selected as the experimental group and class VIII3 consisting of 33 students was selected as a control group. The total sample was 66 students. The experimental group was taught by applying the scrambling method, while the control group was taught by applying the conventional method. Multiple-choice tests containing vocabularies were used as the instrument for collecting the data. The mean score of the experimental and control groups were then compared and calculated. The value of both groups then was tested using the t-test formula. It was obtained that that tobserved value was higher than ttable value (7.25 1.66) at a level of significance =0.05 with a degree of freedom df=58. Based on the determined hypothesis, it meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was successfully rejected. Thus, it was concluded that there was a significant effect of the scramble method on students’ achievement in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the roles of parents in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study was conducted at SMK SPP SNAKMA Muhammadiyah Tanjung Anom during academic year 2021-2022. Descriptive qualitative research design was used to figure out the problems, namely (1) parents’ roles in guiding children and (2) how parents’ guide their children in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. The instrument employed in this study was interview sheet. The subjects of the study were the students’ parents and the English teachers. The first problem was answered through the analysis of interview result and found out that there were 5 roles of parents in guiding their children during online learning of English subject. The roles were as an educator (17%), as a driving force (25%), as a role model (0%), as friend (8%), as a supervisor (42%) and as a counselor (8%). The role of parents as supervisor was the dominant role found in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. The second problem was answered as well through the analysis of interview sheet and it was obtained that the parents’ roles in guiding the children in online learning were still low. The students’ parents had low understanding and background education regarding the implementation of online learning by their children.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of using inquiry learning method on students’ ability in speaking. This research was conducted at SMK Abdi Negara Binjai. The population of this research was the tenth grade students in academic year 2021-2022. There were 2 classes consisting of 55 students. The sample with total number of 20 students were taken by using random sampling with lottery technique. The sample was divided into 2 groups. Experimental group consisted of 10 students was taught using inquiry learning method and control group consisted of 10 students was taught using conventional method. The instrument for collecting the data was a speaking test. Each group was given a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The result of this research showed that the mean of post-test in experimental group (51.6) was higher than control group (44.2) and the value of U-observed (25) was smaller than the value of U-table (30). The testing of hypothesis showed that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. It meant that there was a significant effect on students’ speaking ability taught by using inquiry learning method.

Abstract

Language style can be found in any form such as in daily conversation, magazine, newspaper, short story, novel, etc. Language style may refer to the writing style used by the author or writer as the way or technique chosen upon sentence structure, word choice, and tone. This study took novel entitled The Maze Runner as the source of data. The objective of conducting this study was to analyze the language styles used in the dialogue of the novel. There were 260 pages in total. The data collection was limited only from page 1 to 100. The design used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by reading the novel, analyzed the types of language style, and tabulated the obtained data. The steps used to analyze the data such as identified, listed, and classified the types of language style, counted the percentage, obtained the dominant language styles, described the findings, and displayed data in table. There were 126 dialogues which were analyzed. The findings showed that there were 4 types of language style used in the dialogue. They were colloquial, casual, slang, and consultative style. The percentage obtained such as colloquial style with 55 or 44%, casual style with 37 or 29.36%, slang style with 27 or 21.42%, and consultative style with 7 or 5.5%. From this percentage, it was obvious that the most dominant style used by the author of the novel was colloquial style.
