Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the average Land Surface Temperature (LST) of Java Island, Indonesia, for the year 2024, utilizing the reduceRegions function in Google Earth Engine (GEE). Rapid urbanization and environmental changes on Java Island have significant implications for its climate and thermal conditions, necessitating effective monitoring and analysis of LST. The research employs satellite-based remote sensing techniques to assess the relationship between vegetation cover and surface temperatures, revealing that areas with higher vegetation density tend to exhibit lower surface temperatures. This finding aligns with previous studies, underscoring the importance of green spaces in urban environments. The analysis not only contributes to a deeper understanding of Java Island's environmental dynamics but also provides critical insights for policymakers and urban planners. The results can inform strategies for climate adaptation and sustainable development, addressing ongoing environmental challenges. Limitations of the study are acknowledged, and recommendations for future research are proposed, emphasizing the need for continued exploration of LST variations in relation to urbanization and climate change. Overall, this research serves as a valuable resource for enhancing environmental management practices on Java Island and similar regions facing rapid development.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDM) is a transformative advancement in improving decision-making processes in various fields, including urban planning, environmental management, and disaster response. This research uses a literature review methodology to systematically collect, analyze, and synthesize existing scientific articles, conference papers, and relevant reports related to AI applications in SDSS. The findings of this study reveal that AI technologies, such as machine learning and natural language processing, significantly enhance data processing capabilities, enabling the analysis of complex spatial data and the identification of hidden patterns that may be missed by traditional methods. Despite the great benefits, challenges related to data quality, ethical considerations, and the need for capacity building among stakeholders are critical to the successful implementation of AI in SDSS. It can be concluded that while AI has the potential to revolutionize spatial decision-making, ongoing research is essential to develop best practices, address ethical implications, and foster collaboration among various stakeholders to create a more sustainable and resilient society.

Abstract

Nickel mining in Weda, Halmahera Island, is one of the largest nickel mines in Indonesia, and its activities impact changes in vegetation indices and cover in the area. The research uses Landsat 8 satellite imagery from 2019, 2022, and 2025 with the NDVI algorithm to analyse changes in vegetation index values and vegetation cover. The research results show that the NDVI values for 2019 are the lowest at -0.233774 and the highest at 0.999903; for 2022, the lowest is -0.369486 and the highest is 0.799867; and for 2025, the lowest is -0.369486 and the highest is 0.530372. The NDVI values were then classified into 4 vegetation cover classes: active mining areas, sparse, moderate, and dense vegetation. The active mining area in 2019 was 1.27 km², in 2022 it was 11.91 km², and in 2025 it was 18.20 km². Sparse vegetation in 2019 covered 5.73 km², in 2022 it covered 6.03 km², and in 2025 it covered 8.07 km². Moderate vegetation in 2019 covered 5.72 km², in 2022 it covered 2.68 km², and in 2025 it covered 2.21 km². Dense vegetation in 2019 covered 522.64 km², in 2022 it covered 515.35 km², and in 2025 it covered 507.20 km². The presentation of the mining area continues to increase every year. The results of this research are expected to be used for continuous monitoring to ensure compliance with environmental standards and support rehabilitation programmes in Weda and other tropical mining areas.
