Abstract

Background : One of the most common Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) in dentists is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). The work of dentists with repetitive flexion and extension movements of the radiocarpal articulation can increase the risk of CTS. Patients with CTS most often experience numbness, tingling, and pain along the distribution of the median nerve, which can interfere with work. Objective : This study aims to determine the factors that influence the occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome in dentists. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This study is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. It included 144 dentists in Samarinda City as samples. Results : The results of the study showed that 46 (31.9%) dentists experienced CTS complaints, and 98 (68.1%) dentists did not experience CTS complaints. The bivariate analysis showed that factors related to the risk of CTS (p <0.05) were Age, Nutritional Status, Repetitive Movements, Length of Work, and Length of Service. At the same time, factors unrelated to the risk of CTS were Gender. However, in the results of the logistic regression analysis, there were only three risk factors for CTS, namely Repetitive Movement Factor (p = 0.011; OR = 4.44), Length of Work (p = 0.017; OR = 3.137), and Length of Service (p = 0.048; OR = 8.465). Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Risk factors associated with CTS are Repetitive Movement, Length of Work, and Length of Service. Risk factors not associated with CTS are Age and Nutritional Status.

Abstract

Objectives: This research aims to evaluate some aspects of the knowledge level in dental medicine students at Mulawarman University regarding the use of lateral cephalometric radiography in orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: This research uses a quantitative methodology with a descriptive cross-sectional approach conducted at the medical faculty of the Mulawarman University dentistry study program located in Samarinda Ulu District. The research sample was taken by a total sampling method and consisted of 90 Mulawarman University dentistry students. Research data were obtained through primary data collection in the form of questionnaires that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The results showed that more respondents had a good level of knowledge, with as many as 41 students (45.56%). The class of 2022 dental students had a more dominant level of good knowledge, with as many as 13 students (68.42%) of the total class of 2022 students, and the class of 2021 dental students also had a good level of knowledge, with as many as 13 students (59.09%) of the total class of 2021. The results also show that the factor of high interest in learning is owned by the class of 2022, as many as 18 students (94.74%), and high interest also affects knowledge, so that with high interest, you can get a good level of knowledge (97.56%). In addition, the factor of how to study by non-cramming learning method is dominantly owned by the class of 2022, as many as 15 students (78.95%), and the factor of how to study can affect one's knowledge, so that by learning not overnight, the speed system can get a good level of knowledge (78.05%). Conclusion: In general, dental medicine students are knowledgeable about lateral cephalometric radiography. This level of knowledge is good, and in this study, the results showed that the class of 2022 most dominantly exhibited a non-cramming method and a high level of learning interest.

Abstract

Essential hypertension is a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, especially in the elderly population. Non-pharmacological interventions like Manual Visceral Physiotherapy (MVP) are being developed as an alternative approach to help reduce blood pressure without pharmacological side effects. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of MVP on changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in elderly patients with essential hypertension. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach on 11 respondents aged ?46 years who underwent 12 sessions of MVP over 4 weeks. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention using a sphygmomanometer and analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed that the average systolic blood pressure decreased from 162 mmHg to 129 mmHg, and diastolic from 96 mmHg to 81 mmHg, with a p-value = 0.003 indicating a significant decrease. It can be concluded that MVP is effective in reducing blood pressure in elderly patients with essential hypertension and has the potential to be used as a complementary therapy in physiotherapy practice.

Abstract

The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) is a leading instrument for assessing symptom severity and functional status in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), yet evidence of its validity among dentists in Indonesia remains limited. This cross-sectional study involved 55 dentists with confirmed CTS (positive Phalen and Tinel tests) in Samarinda who self-administered the Indonesian version of the BCTQ (11-item Symptom Severity Scale and 8-item Functional Status Scale). Construct validity was tested using Pearson correlation and internal reliability using Cronbach’s alpha. Subjects comprised 44 females (80.0%) and 11 males (20.0%) with a mean age of 44.7 years. All 11 Symptom Severity Scale items had correlation coefficients of 0.486–0.789 (p<0.01) and the 8 Functional Status Scale items 0.492–0.827 (p<0.01), all exceeding the critical r table value (0.266). Cronbach’s alpha was 0.884 for the Symptom Severity Scale and 0.870 for the Functional Status Scale, both classified as excellent. Therefore, the Indonesian version of the BCTQ is valid and reliable for use among dentists with CTS and is recommended as a screening and treatment outcome evaluation tool in this high-risk population.
