Abstract

Politeness strategy is a strategy in the use of language related to the use of good and polite verbal communication, which can make communication work cooperatively. In terms of communicating, politeness strategies are very important to avoid conflicts in communication which means avoiding face-threatening acts (FTA) of the hearer. In researching politeness strategy, the film is a work of art that can be analyzed because it has characters and utterances that can be analyzed and are closely related to real life. Thus, a film entitled "Gifted" was chosen because this film is related to the education of gifted children, the parenting of gifted children, and is built on mental health issues in the world of learning. This study aims to analyze the politeness strategy of the main character in this film. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach and audio-visual data collection approach. The result of the analysis shows there are 60 politeness strategies data found from 512 utterances from the main characters. 37 data of positive politeness strategy categorized into three subtypes: Claim common ground (12 data), Convey that speaker and hearer are cooperators (24 data), and fulfill hearer’s want (1 data). 23 data of negative politeness strategy that categorized into: be direct (9 data), do not presume or assume (3 data), do not coerce hearer (3 data), and communicate speaker’s want to not impinge (23 data).

Abstract

Study This aims To identify ( 1) taboo words, (2) forms of taboo words, and (3) references used in public Village Mundeh, Tabanan. Study This uses the qualitative descriptive. The data type uses primary data instrument study as a table sheet. The deep data collection study technique uses interviews with three original people, Villagin e Mundeh, with criteria that have been set. Procedure Data analysis begins with data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and writing a conclusion. Research data in the form of a taboo word in the environment Narayanan, pawing, palemahan, form taboo, and a reference from taboo the. Study This adopts a theory from Frazer (1955), which discusses taboo names and words, and a theory from Montagu (1973), which discusses oath swear. Results show that 5 data were found in the environment parhyangan, 5 in the environment palemahan, and 32 in the environment pawongan. For taboo Names, 6 data were found for words, 13 for swearing words, and reference to taboo is appropriate with theory from Laksana (2009) found data for 12 references. The conclusion from the study This shows that the most data found in the environment pawongan as many as 32 words.

Abstract

In Bugis culture, taboo language reflects the culture of Bugis society. This is part of the culture of the Bugis people, and the next generation really needs to understand these words. This research aims to identify taboo words, identify their forms, and analyze their references. This research was designed in the form of descriptive-qualitative research. This research was conducted in Tanjung Karang Village, Sebatik District, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province. Primary data in this research was collected using in-depth interview techniques. The researcher acts as the main instrument which is equipped with other instruments in the form of interview sheets. The data obtained was analyzed according to the research objectives. Taboo words, their forms and references were analyzed using the theories of Frazer (1955) and Montagu (1973). The research results show that the 45 taboo words can be grouped based on the use of taboo words about harmony with God (5 taboo words), the use of taboo words about harmony with humans (35 taboo words), and the use of taboo words about harmony with the environment (5 taboo words). Related to taboo in the form of 22 taboo names and taboo words, and 23 in the section on swear words, and related taboo references (12 references). Based on the list of taboo words above, it can be concluded that the term or name of taboo is often found and used in the Bugis language in the village of Tanjung Karang, especially in prohibitions which are called taboo in the sense that taboo is a word that when spoken contains magic, and prohibition. or an insult that makes someone offended if it is said.

Abstract

This research aims to know the types of lexicons used during the Metajen tradition in Sukadana Village, Karangasem Regency. This study is a qualitative study using 2 (two) experts in this field, namely the elderly (penua) and also the local village apparatus. The instruments in this study are the researchers themselves, the observation sheet, the interview guide, the recording tool and the phone camera. From this study, a number of lexicons and cultural meanings can be found in the study: a total of 64 (sixty-four), displayed in (24) lexicon about type or roosters, fourteen (14) Lexicons about betting code, eight (8) lexicons about instruments used, (7) lexicon for roles of people in the tradition, and eleven (11) lexicons of type of taji or sharp knives used and how it is being installed in the feet of the roosters. The cultural meaning of this activity was a component of a cultural ceremonies known as the mecaru ceremony or Tabuh Rah, which is identical to the Hindu ceremony specifically any Bhuta Yadnya upakara.

Abstract

As one of the subjects of discourse analysis, advertising contains a wide variety of exciting topics that can be discussed. The advertisement for the cigarette, which emphasizes the impact on one’s emotions, also provides an opportunity for reflective thought. The purpose of this article was to explain the advertisement for A-Mild Sampoerna Cigarettes that appeared in the Bukan Main Edition concerning the social practices component. The research utilized Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework, following the qualitative methodology. The primary and secondary data comprised five advertisements from the A-Mild Sampoerna advertisement Bukan Main Edition and relevant literature in the shape of articles and books. A cycle consisting of data collection, condensation, data triangulation, and conclusion drawing was created because of the deductive method of data collection and analysis used. The findings reveal some fascinating results regarding the impact of the company’s advertisements on society. The analysis results also showed that the theme of the advertisement chosen by the company picturized the social issues that occurred in daily life in Indonesia, which is covered through the arrangement of discursive phrases. Implications were drawn concerning enhancing analytical skills, raising social consciousness, forming critical thinking, and the occupation of references surrounding the investigated problem.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of Duolingo on students' vocabulary mastery and writing competence, as well as the simultaneous effect on both. The population of this study was 8th-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja in the academic year 2022/2023, totaling 329 students. The sample of this study involved 67 students, consisting of 34 students in the experimental group and 33 students in the control group. Multistage sampling was used as a sampling technique. Data were collected through a post-test covering writing competency tests and vocabulary tests. The data were analyzed using one-way MANOVA through the SPSS 22.0 application. The results showed that 1) there was a simultaneous effect of using Duolingo on students' vocabulary mastery and writing competence; 2) students who were taught using Duolingo showed better vocabulary mastery than those who were taught using conventional media; and 3) students who were taught using Duolingo showed better writing competence than those who were taught using conventional media. Thus, this study indicates that Duolingo enables students to acquire new vocabulary and master it so that their writing competence increases and motivates students to learn English in a fun way.

Abstract

Jargon yang ada dalam tradisi sabung ayam tradisional umumnya hanya digunakan oleh masyarakat yang bergabung dan datang ke arena upacara sabung ayam tradisional. Artinya, jargon sabung ayam tradisional hanya diketahui oleh pemain dan orang-orang yang terlibat dalam sabung ayam tradisional ini. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk menemukan jargon yang ada dalam tradisi perayaan sabung ayam. Penelitian ini didesain dalam bentuk penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yaitu observasi dan wawancara. Wawancara dilaksanakan dengan mewawancarai dua informan terpercaya. Teknik yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data yaitu analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis data meliputi pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan akhir, dan verifikasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 43 jargon yang ditemukan di tradisi perayaan sabung ayam ini. Jargon tersebut dibedakan menjadi 2 tipe, yaitu word formation process dan word class. 25 word class, 12 affixations, dan 6 compounding words. Semua jargons memiliki arti masing-masing yang akan digunakan oleh para pemain (bobotoh) di arena sabung ayam.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the prefixes and suffixes of the Balinesse language spoken in Dausa, Kintamani Sub-District, Bangli district, and Banjar Tengah Regency in Bali. The prefixes and suffixes described in this study belong to the one categorized as derivational and inflectional morphemes. This descriptive qualitative research involved three informants as the source of study data. They were selected based on a set of criteria suggested by Samarin (1998). The data were collected based on three techniques, namely: observation, recording technique, and interview. The researcher studied Dausa, observing, recording, and noting informants' data. Then transcribed, categorized, and translated the data into Indonesian, identified prefixes and suffixes, formulating rules for derivational and inflectional morphemes based on the data display. The results of the study show that there are seven kinds of prefixes found in the language. The prefixes include {bΛ-}, {bǝ-}, {mɅ-}, {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, and {mә-}, and there are five kinds of suffixes which include {-Ʌŋ}, {-In}, {-Ʌn}, {-Ʌ}, and {-ē}. Among them, there are three kinds of prefixes: {mɅ-}, {ŋ-}, and {mә-}, and there are four kinds of suffixes: {-Ʌŋ}, {-In}, {-Ʌn}, and {-Ʌ} that are categorized as derivational morphemes. There were five kinds of prefixes: {bΛ-}, {bǝ-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, {mǝ-}, and five kinds of suffixes: {-ē}, {-Ʌŋ}, {-in}, {-Ʌn}, and {-Ʌ} which are categorized as inflectional morphemes. The study informs academics about Balinese morphemes.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying taboo words of Balinese language spoken in Nusa Penida based on the concept of Tri Hita Karana. Descriptive qualitative was used as the research design of this study. There were three of local people in Nusa Penida recruited as the research informants by using purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by conducting interview and taking-note. The instruments were interview guide and note or check-list. The obtained data were analyzed by using qualitative data analysis method consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The finding showed that there were 60 taboo words of Balinese language spoken by the local people in Nusa Penida Island. It was found that there were eight forms of taboo words spoken by local people in Nusa Penida Island, such as; metaphor, metonymy, and euphemism, abusive, cursing, obscenities, blasphemies, swearing, and expletive. It also discovered that there were 16 categories of references used, such as; parents name, animal name, God name, name of people who have died, name of relatives, mentioning genitals, sexual activity, specific jobs, bodily function, wisdom of ruler, illness, nature, name of spirits, personal pronoun, specific activity.

Abstract

TikTok application is one of the most used applications recently. From 14 years old until 30 years old people spend more than 30 minutes a day opening this application. Enormous, interesting videos with varied topics make many people like TikTok. Besides that, they can create their video easily with the features which are already provided. This phenomenon affects education as well. Teachers try to utilize this application as their learning media. Not only that, but teachers also create their accounts and upload videos that are related to the learning process or education. Therefore, the researcher is interested to know how the language used by teachers in TikTok shapes their identity. The researcher analyzed two subjects, two of them teachers in different countries. This research used a qualitative method that describes the language used in three videos in teachers’ TikTok accounts and analyses it.  The findings revealed that both teachers wanted to be seen as capable and friendly teachers because they know how to build an interesting learning process and build good relationships with their students.
