Abstract

This study aimed at describing the English for Food and beverage service materials needed by students of SMK SMSR Ubud, describing how the materials were developed, and analysing the quality of the developed materials. This study used research and development model suggested by (Richey and Klein, 2007) comprising design, development and evaluation. The instruments used were questionnaires, interview guides, document analysis, and checklist. The findings of this study show that there were 7 topics needed to be developed included Preparing restaurant area, preparing and set up table, greet the guest, taking order, serving food, closing restaurant area, and non-alcoholic beverage. The materials were designed by following the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) material design suggested by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) involving input, content focus, language focus and task. Since English for food and beverage is part of ESP that is under English for Occupational Purposes, the effectiveness of the developed materials was evaluated using the criteria of good ESP materials suggested by Litz (2005), Hutchinson and Waters (2008), and Tomlinson (2009). After gaining the scores from the expert judges, the data then used the categorization of good teaching materials proposed by Nurkancana and Sunartana (2011). The quality of the developed materials was categorized as good material. Thus, it can be used as a main source for learning English Food and beverage service at SMK SMSR Ubud.

Abstract

This study intended to analyze types of code-mixing and determine the motive of code-mixing used by the seventh-semester students of English Language Education on Facebook. Descriptive qualitative was used as the design of this study since it focused on a single case of code-mixing. Therefore, this study only focused on Indonesia-English code-mixing used by the student. Moreover, the data were gained by observing students’ Facebook posts, comments, and Facebook stories. The data were also gained by interviewing the selected subject by using an interview guide. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed by using Ho’s theory, Myusken’s theory, Hoffman’s theory, Hockett’s theory, and Saville-Troike’s theory. Based on data analysis, the result of the study showed that Lexical Word was the most frequently used by the student, with a total number of 41 (33%) from 142 occurrences. Meanwhile, talking about a particular topic was the most reason underlying student in using code-mixing on Facebook by 12 (27%) of the subject picked.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the grammatical errors and analyze the sources of grammatical errors committed by students in writing cause and effect paragraphs. This research used a mixed-method design as the research design. The data were collected through document collection of mid-term tests and final tests. The subjects of this study were students in two classes of the English Language Education Program. The results of this study showed that the types of grammatical errors in students' writing were omissions 54 errors (44%), misformation 37 errors (31%), addition 28 errors (23%), and misordering 3 errors (2%). The total errors committed by students in their paragraph writing were 122 errors. Meanwhile, the source of errors in students' writing was caused by intralingual transfer 82 (67%), interlingual transfer 35 (29%), and communication strategies 5 (4%). In writing, it is encouraged to check grammar through grammar checking that are available in order to reduce grammar mistakes and make the massage of the writing clearer. Teachers are encouraged to pay attention to students’ grammar and use teaching technique that can improve students’ grammar.

Abstract

Language is an essential tool that we use in our daily life. In general, language is used as a toolto convey information. In using language, speakers must pay attention to the language used.Language users should do this to avoid or minimize errors in conveying information to listeners. Thisstudy aims to determine what types of speech acts and politeness strategies are used by pre-serviceteachers when teaching online classes. This research is expected to provide an overview of how speechacts and politeness strategies can affect educational activities. This research is a qualitative descriptivestudy. This research was conducted using two steps. The researcher's first step is to observe how preserviceteachers use speech act and politeness strategies in online classes. Then the researcher willconduct interviews with research subjects or pre-service teachers to verify the data that has beenobserved. In conducting this research, the researcher used two theories as to the research foundation.The first theory is Searle's theory of speech act types and Brown and Levinson's theory of politenessstrategies. The study found that if pre-service teachers use five types of speech acts, they arerepresentative, directive, commissive, expressive, and directive. This study also found that pre-serviceteachers used more directive speech acts in teaching online classes than other types of speech acts. Inaddition to the use of speech acts, this study also found that pre-service teachers also use fourpoliteness strategies in teaching online classes. The four types of politeness strategies are bald-onrecord,positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the kind of speech act used by pre-service teachers and studentsof SMK Negeri 1 Singaraja in WhatsApp as learning media. Investigate the most dominant speech actused by pre-service teachers and students, and analyze the kind of instructional function used by thepre-service teachers. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative. The subject of this researchis the pre-service teacher and students in SMK Negeri 1 Singaraja. The data were collected throughobservation and interview. The data from the observation was collected using an observation sheetwhich developed from Searle’s (1969) theory of speech act and Johnson’s (1997) theory of instructionalfunction. The interview has been done semi-structured using an interview guide. The result showsthat the pre-service teacher use four speech act in the learning activity; representative, directive,commissive, and expressive. The pre-service teacher uses directive speech to act dominantly to makethe students active in the learning process. Meanwhile, the students use four speech act, includingrepresentative, directive, commissive, and expressive. The students use representative in dominant tobe active and getting feedback in the learning activity. The kinds of the instructional function used bythe pre-service teacher are control, organize, and motivational. It was found that the directive speechact functioned as control. Commissive functioned as organize. And expressive as motivationalfunction.

Abstract

Balinese culture has many traditions. One of the traditions in Bali is the Balinese dance that exists in Bali. Several dances have a sacred meaning for Balinese people. One of the dances is the Rangda dance. This dance contains many lexicons in the dance's costumes. This study aimed to discover the lexicons that exist in Rangda dance costumes. This study is designed as descriptive qualitative research using the ecolinguistics approach. The data were obtained through observation and interviews with selected informants. The study's result shows that twenty-seven lexicons exist in Rangda dance costumes. The data were categorized into the lexicons in the mask (ten lexicons) and lexicons on the costume (seventeen lexicons). Those lexicons including tapel rangda, terang, kumba, petitis, lidah api, teteh api, jangar api, rambut, jebug, bungan jepun, jaler reringitan, baju reringitan, udeng, badong mute, badong kulit, angkeb baong, tapih, ampok ampok, kuku, basang basang, sabuk, baju pepontangan, jaler pepontangan, semayut, nyonyo. galeng, and kereb.

Abstract

Abstract. Topeng Sidakarya dance was one of the classics that originated in the 16th century that related to the story of the arrival of Brahmana Keling in Bali. The dance had many lexicons in the Balinese language. This study aims at investigating the lexicons in the Topeng Sidakarya dance and their cultural meanings. This study was conducted as descriptive qualitative research using an ethnolinguistic approach. The method of data collection are observation and interviews. The research instruments include the researcher as the main instrument, an observation sheet, an interview guide, and a phone recorder. The result of this study shows that sixteen (19) lexicons were related to movements (three in head movements, ten in body movements, and three in leg movements). The cultural meanings of the lexicons are related to the Balinese Hindu leadership concepts, namely Panca Upaya Sandhi, Nawanatya, Tri Upaya Sandhi, Sad Warnaning Raja Niti, Panca Dasa Pramiteng Prabhu. In addition, the dance movements also illustrate the Tri Hita Karana concept (harmony with God, people, and nature). This study is beneficial for language teaching and dance teachers, where the result of the lexicons found can be used to teach the Balinese language and dance; therefore, it can maintain the existence of Balinese language and culture from extinction. Keywords: Topeng Sidakarya, lexicons, cultural meaning, ethnolinguistic

Abstract

Abstract When the 2013 Curriculum and text-based teaching of Indonesian were implemented, teaching of grammar was given a special portion. Its existence in textbooks is interesting to study because this is the latest development in the position of grammar in teaching Indonesian. Therefore, the research problem of how the existence of a grammatical component in SMA Indonesian textbooks is formulated. This research used a qualitative design to solve the research problem. The data source is the Indonesian textbook for senior high school published by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2016. The data collection method used is documentation. The data analysis model of Miles and Huberman will process the obtained data. The results of the study show the following things. Of the 22 materials on text distributed into three books, 20 contain grammatical components. The rest that did not include the grammatical units was poetry text material in class X and novel text material in class XII. Twenty materials on texts have grammatical components consisting of 19 materials of untheoretical explanations of the existing grammatical items. The other has thorough material on the text of the observation report in the textbook for class X. Meanwhile, the twenty materials on texts that contain grammatical components have provide examples and exercises related to the existing grammatical items.Keywords: grammatical component, learning, text-based   Abstrak Ketika Kurikulum 2013 dan pengajaran bahasa Indonesia berbasis teks diterapkan, pengajaran gramatika diberikan porsi khusus. Keberadaannya dalam buku pelajaran menarik untuk dikaji karena ini merupakan perkembangan terakhir posisi gramatika dalam pengajaran bahasa Indonesia. Oleh karena itu, masalah penelitian tentang bagaimana keberadaan komponen gramatika dalam buku teks bahasa Indonesia SMA dirumuskan. Desain kualitatif digunakan untuk menjawab masalah penelitian. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah buku teks Bahasa Indonesia SMA terbitan Kemendikbud (2016). Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah dokumentasi. Data yang diperoleh kemudian diolah dengan model analisis data dari Miles dan Hubberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan hal-hal sebagai berikut. Dari 22 materi teks yang didistribusikan ke dalam tiga buku, dua puluh materi mengandung komponen gramatika. Dua materi yang tidak mengandung komponen gramatika, yaitu materi teks puisi di kelas X dan materi teks novel di kelas XII. Dari 20 materi teks yang mengandung komponen gramatika, terdapat 19 materi yang tidak menyertakan penjelasan teoretis dari butir gramatika yang ada dan hanya satu yang berisi penjelasan, yaitu materi pada teks laporan hasil observasi yang ada di dalam buku ajar kelas X. Sementara itu, 20 materi pada teks yang mengandung komponen gramatika memberikan contoh dan latihan yang berkaitan dengan butir-butir gramatika yang ada. Palawakya dance is a kind of dance which mixes the arts of dance, music, and old Balinese song called Kakawin. Culturally, the dance consists of various lexicons used in common life but it is getting rarely used by people nowadays. This research was designed in the form of descriptive qualitative research by applying an ecolinguistic approach. It was focused on analyzing the lexicons of Palawakya dance costumes in Jagaraga Village, Singaraja. Observation and interview were conducted to obtain the data of this research by involving three informants. The informants were selected by using purposive sampling. The instruments used in gaining the data were observation sheet and interview guide. The results of this study showed that there were 17 lexicons found in the dance costumes. The dance costumes were divided into five parts; 1) head costume consists of five lexicons, 2) neck costume consists of one lexicon, 3) body costume consists of eight lexicons, 4) hands, costume consists of one lexicon, 5) leg costume consists of two lexicons.
