Abstract

This study explores the utilization of communication technology to alleviate loneliness among elderly residents in nursing homes, specifically at UPTD Pelayanan Sosial Lanjut Usia Tresna Werdha Natar, Lampung Province. As internet usage increases in Indonesia, older adults remain significantly underrepresented among users due to generational gaps in digital literacy. Through a community service project, this initiative sought to enhance elderly well-being by teaching them to use communication platforms like WhatsApp for maintaining connections with family and friends. The intervention included workshops, device usage training, and practical simulations aimed at reducing social isolation and fostering emotional support. Using a qualitative method, the study interviewed 29 elderly residents aged 70–79. The results revealed that 85% of respondents reported reduced feelings of loneliness after learning to use WhatsApp, noting improved emotional well-being and increased communication frequency with family members. Social virtual activities such as group chats and online events further engaged the elderly and contributed to their mental health. The findings underscore the critical role of nursing home staff and family support in sustaining elderly participation in digital communication. This project concludes that communication technology, when supported by structured training and emotional reinforcement, can be an effective strategy for enhancing the quality of life among the elderly in institutional care

Abstract

This study analyzes how the film Parasite depicts structural poverty through the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings contained in each scene. At the denotative level, the film displays literal visual elements such as the Kim family's subterranean semi-basement, with dim, yellowish lighting, in stark contrast to the Park family's bright, modern, luxurious home. The connotative level reveals symbolic meanings where the semi-basement represents social decline and the vulnerability of the lower class, while the staircase motif connotes a metaphor for fragile social mobility and the cycle of poverty that is difficult to break. At the mythical level, the film dismantles capitalist ideology that naturalizes poverty as a "natural" consequence of social hierarchy. Using qualitative research methods and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis techniques, researchers collected data through observation and documentation, and validated the data using triangulation. The results of the study using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory revealed that the visualization of poverty in the film clearly reflects structural poverty-a condition in which certain groups of people cannot access sources of income due to unfair social structures. This concept is reinforced by the Theory of Social Democracy which emphasizes that poverty is a systemic problem, not just the result of individual failure.

Abstract

This study explores the construction of virtual identity in the animated film Colorful Stage! A Miku Who Can’t Sing (2025) through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework. Using a qualitative approach, the analysis focuses on selected visual and auditory signs, including stage design, avatar customization, audience responses, and glitch effects. Each sign is examined at the levels of denotation and connotation, followed by the identification of myths that naturalize particular understandings of digital identity. The findings demonstrate that the film portrays virtual identity as both aspirational and vulnerable: aspirational through the myth of perfection, where avatars appear flawless and empowering, and vulnerable through scenes that reveal emotional fragility and technological disruptions. This duality reflects broader cultural narratives about authenticity, social validation, and the tension between real and virtual selves. By situating the analysis within media semiotics and digital culture, the study highlights how Colorful Stage functions as a cultural text that mirrors contemporary discourses on identity in mediated environments.

Abstract

Changes in healthy lifestyle trends in the digital era have triggered an increase in healthy food advertisements circulating on various social media platforms. These advertisements not only function as a means of product promotion but also as a medium for constructing new symbols related to the concept of health. This study aims to analyse the transformation of symbolism in healthy food advertisements using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach, which emphasizes the triadic relationship between representamen, object, and interpretant, as well as the classification of signs into icons, indices, and symbols. The research method used is qualitative with semiotic analysis techniques on a number of healthy food advertisements uploaded on Instagram and TikTok from January to June 2025. The results show a dominant shift from the use of visual icons, such as images of fresh food, to activity indices that associate products with an active lifestyle, as well as symbols that position health as a social identity and prestigious aspiration. This transformation illustrates how healthy food is positioned not only as a nutritional need, but also as a representation of a modern lifestyle and certain moral values. Further discussion links these findings with previous literature and highlights the ethical implications of advertising strategies that focus on identity symbolism. The study's conclusions emphasize that healthy food advertising on social media plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions of the meaning of "healthy," which is no longer solely biological but also cultural and symbolic.
