Abstract

General background: Mathematics is a core subject in elementary schools, yet students often face challenges mastering basic arithmetic operations. Specific background: In Muara Bungo, many fifth-grade students struggle to grasp multiplication concepts, including word problems, operation selection, and decimal placement. Knowledge gap: Few studies have analyzed multiplication difficulties within this local socio-cultural and educational context. Aims: This study aims to identify the types of multiplication-related difficulties, explore their causes, and provide context-specific recommendations. Results: Findings reveal four main difficulties: misinterpretation of problems, incorrect operation selection, errors in decimal placement, and reliance on memorization over understanding. Internal causes include low motivation and self-confidence, while external causes include fast-paced teaching, limited use of concrete media, and minimal parental support. Novelty: This study highlights psychological and contextual factors as the dominant contributors to multiplication difficulties in Muara Bungo’s schools, offering a locally relevant perspective. Implications: The results suggest that teachers should use varied strategies, concrete-to-abstract approaches, and supportive classroom environments, while parents should encourage consistent home practice. Highlights: Many students misunderstand multiplication word problems and rely on memorization. Psychological factors such as fear and low confidence strongly affect learning outcomes. Contextualized, concrete-to-abstract teaching strategies are crucial for conceptual mastery. Keywords: Learning Difficulties, Multiplication, Mathematics Education, Conceptual Understanding, Elementary Students

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the problem-solving abilities of elementary school students in solving story problems related to spatial geometry, as viewed from gender differences. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, with 128 students from several elementary schools in Muara Bungo City who have studied spatial geometry as the research subjects. The research instrument consists of an essay test designed based on four problem-solving ability indicators, namely: (1) understanding the problem, (2) developing a solution plan, (3) solving the problem according to the plan, and (4) reviewing the results obtained. Data were collected through tests, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing stages. The research results showed differences in strategies and achievements between male and female students on each indicator. Female students excelled in the indicators of understanding the problem and reviewing the results of their work, with characteristics of high accuracy and consistency in verifying answers. Conversely, male students were more prominent in the indicators of developing a solution plan and solving problems according to the plan, tending to choose quick and practical strategies. These differences reflect the influence of psychological characteristics and thinking styles specific to each gender. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for teachers in designing mathematics learning strategies that accommodate the strengths of both genders so that all students can optimize their problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of the Think Pair Share (TPS) learning model on mathematics learning outcomes and students’ self-efficacy, as well as the relationship between the two variables among fifth-grade students at SDN 109/II Manggis. Using a quantitative experimental method with a pretest–posttest control group design, the experimental class was taught using TPS, while the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected through a mathematics test and a self-efficacy questionnaire, analyzed with SPSS 25 using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, Paired Sample t-Test, and Pearson Product Moment correlation. Results indicated that TPS significantly improved mathematics learning outcomes and self-efficacy. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.656, p < 0.05) was found between self-efficacy and learning outcomes. TPS is thus recommended as an effective alternative for elementary mathematics instruction, enhancing both academic achievement and students’ confidence.

Abstract

In this study, 116 students enrolled in Universitas Muhammadiyah Muara Bungo of School Teacher Education Study Programme (PGSD) will have their Statistical Literacy (SL) proficiency assessed using the Statistical Literacy Ability Test Questions integrated with Indonesian Education Issues using a quantitative descriptive research approach. Researchers used the interview technique to delve deeper into the data they collected, while descriptive analysis was done on the data collected through the distribution of test questions. The findings demonstrated that the students' Statistical Literacy still needed to be improved. On the Statistical Literacy ability exam, 75% of students who scored below 60 and 25% of students who scored over 60 showed these findings. Secondly, the average student's proficiency in answering SL test questions can be observed based on Indicators, which are 71.33% in Indicator 1, 53.16% in Indicator 2, and 57.18% in Indicator 3. In contrast, the average student's proficiency in answering SL questions is 28.67% in indicator 1, 46.84% in indicator 2, and 42.82% in indicator 3. According to in-depth interviews, the primary cause of students' low proficiency in SL is their need to master descriptive statistics. Conversely, the Indonesian Education Issue approach is the primary element contributing to students' capacity to solve SL questions. According to the findings of this study, more research is required to determine whether using learning models, creating new learning models, or using learning strategies to tackle SL challenges can help students' SL skills.
