Abstract

The application of critical discourse analysis extends beyond its usage in analyzing and observing social and political materials that are inappropriate for use in English language teaching (ELT). With the aid of the CDA, students will analyze, code, and understand textual content to enhance their speaking skills as they build arguments. This literature study examined pertinent critical discourse analysis studies released in respected journals or as conference proceedings between 2009 and 2021. After that, the papers were sorted and divided into three groups according to the following themes: (1) CDA's contributions to speaking instruction, (2) EFL learners' issues with CDA in their speaking abilities, and (3) studies on the pedagogical effects of CDA on instruction.

Abstract

This research pointed to investigate the competence of third-semester English Language Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong (Academic Year 2022-2023) in using participle verbs. Employing a descriptive quantitative method, the research focused on a purposive sample of 20 students. The analysis revealed that the students’ competence in using participle verbs fell within the “fair” category, with an average score of 72.55. This suggests that while their ability is not exceptional, it also is not particularly weak. However, it is important to note that achieving a fair level of competence indicates a basic understanding of participle usage, but there is room for improvement. This finding underscores the need for targeted interventions and additional practice to enhance students’ proficiency in using participle verbs effectively. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that educational institutions implement targeted interventions to improve students' proficiency in using participle verbs effectively. These interventions could include specialized grammar workshops, additional practice sessions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of using the Padlet application to improve writing skills through self-study. Self-directed learning methods are becoming increasingly important in today's educational landscape, with technology acting as a key driver. This study engages students in educational settings to apply independent learning using padlets in developing their writing skills. This research was conducted through a qualitative approach with a classroom action research design. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and document analysis of the activities carried out by students in the learning environment. The results of the study show that the use of the Padlet application is effective in stimulating student learning independence and active participation in the development of writing skills. This app provides an interactive platform that facilitates collaboration, reflection, and feedback between students and other teachers. The results of this study have important implications for the design of learning strategies that encourage student independence and develop writing skills. In addition, this research also highlights the role of technology in creating innovative learning environments and supporting student academic growth. Thus, the application of the Padlet application in independent learning can be considered as the right solution to improve students' writing skills

Abstract

Komunikasi antar kapal di laut sangat penting untuk koordinasi operasional, mencegah insiden, dan memastikan keselamatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperdalam pemahaman tentang komunikasi yang baik dan benar di atas kapal serta meningkatkan keterampilan berkomunikasi di lingkungan maritime. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menggabungkan tinjauan literatur, wawancara, dan observasi di KM.Sabuk Nusantara 78 PT Pelni dari 19 Oktober 2021 hingga 19 Oktober 2022. Temuan utama penelitian ini menyoroti faktor kendala dalam komunikasi antar kapal, seperti masalah pengelolaan lalu lintas laut, kesalahan manusia dalam komunikasi, dan gangguan peralatan komunikasi pelayaran. Hasil penelitian menekankan pentingnya penerapan Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP) dalam komunikasi di laut untuk mengatasi hambatan bahasa dan mencegah kesalahpahaman yang berujung pada kecelakaan. Selain itu, standar internasional seperti SOLAS dan STCW memberikan kontribusi penting dalam peningkatan keselamatan kapal dan pelayaran di seluruh dunia. Penelitian ini menyarankan perlunya pelatihan bahasa Inggris maritim dengan fokus pada SMCP bagi perwira kapal dan operator Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) untuk meningkatkan interaksi dan keselamatan di laut. Dengan demikian, peningkatan komunikasi kapal yang efektif menjadi kunci dalam menjaga keselamatan pelayaran global.

Abstract

Pelayaran berperan penting bagi kehidupan sosial ekonomi masyarakat Indonesia, yang terdiri dari banyak pulau dan berada di jalur perdagangan internasional strategis. Mengingat peran ini, keselamatan dan keamanan pelayaran menjadi prioritas utama yang diatur oleh Undang-Undang Nomor 17 Tahun 2008 tentang Pelayaran. Penelitian ini mengkaji prosedur penerbitan Surat Persetujuan Berlayar melalui sistem Inaportnet di Kantor Unit Penyelenggara Pelabuhan Bulukumba, dengan fokus pada upaya meningkatkan keselamatan dan efisiensi layanan kapal. Sistem Inaportnet terbukti memberikan manfaat signifikan, seperti transparansi, keadilan, efisiensi, dan akurasi data, serta mendukung daya saing nasional dan investasi. Perbandingan dengan layanan manual menunjukkan keunggulan Inaportnet dalam meningkatkan efisiensi waktu dan biaya pelayanan, meskipun masih menghadapi kendala teknis terkait kapasitas file dan sertifikat. Implikasi penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya integrasi sistem elektronik seperti Inaportnet untuk meningkatkan efektivitas, keamanan, dan transparansi layanan pelabuhan secara menyeluruh. Peningkatan kepatuhan terhadap persyaratan kelaiklautan kapal dan pemantauan kondisi cuaca yang cermat menjadi kunci untuk mengurangi penundaan dalam penerbitan Surat Persetujuan Berlayar dan memastikan keselamatan pelayaran yang optimal. Dalam konteks ini, upaya koordinasi antarinstansi terkait sangat penting untuk memastikan proses pelayaran yang aman dan efisien sesuai dengan standar keselamatan yang berlaku.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemanfaatan evernote sebagai media note-taking dalam pembelajaran reading mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris Maritim pada taruna Program Studi Nautika TA. 2023/2024 di Politeknik Pelayaran Sorong dan sekaligus mengetahui tanggapan mereka terhadap pemanfaatan evernote. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan memberikan panduan pemanfaatan evernote yang kemudian akan digunakan oleh taruna. Angket evaluasi dan wawancara digunakan untuk mengetahui tanggapan taruna terhadap penggunaan evernote meliputi, tanggapan pada aspek pengetahuan umum, kenyamanan, efisiensi penggunaan, pencapaian tujuan, dan sikap kolaboratif. Analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu sequential explanatory design. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, diketahui bahwa 97% taruna mendapatkan pengetahuan pemanfaatan aplikasi evernote dari panduan yang diberikan, dan 92% taruna menganggap aplikasi ini efisien untuk digunakan dan memudahkan mahasiswa untuk memahami materi. Selain itu, ada 89% taruna merasa nyaman menggunakan aplikasi evernote, dan 89% taruna menilai aplikasi evernote sangat baik untuk mendukung pencapaian tujuan mereka dalam meningkatkan produktivitas kualitas belajar reading serta 100% taruna menganggap aplikasi evernote sangat membantu mereka berkolaborasi untuk berbagi catatan/tugas dan mengumpulkannya dengan efisien. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa aplikasi evernote terbukti dapat memberikan pengetahuan baru terhadap media pembelajaran berbasis digital, menciptakan kenyamanan, efisiensi penggunanya, mendukung ketercapaian tujuan, serta menumbuhkan sikap kolaboratif.

Abstract

The low proficiency in the Indonesian language among residents of Kokoda Village serves as the primary background for this study, which is influenced by limited access to formal education and the complex socio-cultural context of the community. This research aims to measure the improvement in participants’ Indonesian language skills after engaging in a learning program designed with a contextual and participatory approach, as well as to understand the level of participant engagement throughout the program implementation. A quantitative descriptive method was employed, involving 45 participants as research subjects. Data were collected through tests assessing writing, reading, and speaking abilities in Indonesian. Data analysis was conducted in three stages: data processing, data management, and result interpretation, to provide a comprehensive overview of participants’ skill development. The findings reveal significant improvements across all language skill areas: reading ability increased to an average of 72%, writing ability reached 80%, and speaking ability reached 69%. Additionally, participant engagement was high, with 84% consistently attending at least 75% of the learning sessions, indicating strong motivation fostered through an interactive learning approach that integrates local content. The study’s implications highlight the importance of implementing learning programs that are sensitive to socio-cultural contexts and empower local facilitators to enhance functional literacy in remote areas. This approach not only improves learning outcomes but also supports program sustainability by strengthening social and cultural bonds within the community. The research provides recommendations for the development of more responsive educational programs that address the specific needs and characteristics of indigenous communities in future initiatives

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi penerapan International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code di Pelabuhan Cirebon, dengan meninjau aspek organisasi keamanan, pelaksanaan prosedur operasional, serta ketersediaan sarana dan prasarana pendukung. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi terhadap aktivitas keamanan di lingkungan pelabuhan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa struktur organisasi keamanan telah dibentuk sesuai ketentuan ISPS Code, dengan peran aktif Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO), Company Security Officer (CSO), dan Port Security Committee (PSC). Di sisi operasional, kegiatan pemeriksaan dokumen, pemeriksaan individu dan barang, serta pelaksanaan drill telah dilaksanakan, namun evaluasi pasca latihan belum maksimal. Sarana pendukung seperti CCTV, X-ray, dan metal detector telah tersedia, tetapi masih terbatas dalam jangkauan dan pemeliharaan teknis. Koordinasi antar instansi, seperti KSOP, agen kapal, dan operator pelabuhan, masih berjalan secara parsial dan belum terintegrasi sepenuhnya. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penerapan ISPS Code di Pelabuhan Cirebon telah memenuhi aspek minimum compliance, namun memerlukan penguatan dalam pelatihan SDM, pemeliharaan sarana, dan integrasi sistem keamanan antarinstansi.

Abstract

Gamified learning is widely recognized as an engaging instructional approach that can enhance students' motivation by incorporating elements of play, challenge, and reward. While motivation plays a crucial role in the learning process, it is important to examine whether it truly correlates with language competence, particularly in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning.  This study aimed to examine the relationship between students’ learning motivation in gamified English learning and their English competence. The participants were 30 fifth-grade students (aged 10–12) from a private primary school in Indonesia, selected through total sampling. A quantitative correlational method was used, employing a motivation questionnaire based on Keller’s ARCS model (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction), and English achievement tests. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The results revealed a very strong and statistically significant positive correlation (r = .996, p < .01) between learning motivation and English competence. These findings suggest that maintaining high levels of student motivation through gamified learning strategies can significantly support academic success in language learning. This study contributes to the growing evidence that motivation is not only an emotional factor but a critical predictor of academic achievement.
