Abstract

Carrying a backpack that is excessively heavy can lead to negative effects, including pain in the shoulders, back, and waist. Additionally, it can cause postural changes due to alterations in the shape of the vertebrae. The goal of this Community Service Project (CSP) was to educate students at SMA 2 Padang about the proper use of backpacks, the appropriate weight for backpacks, and the negative effects of carrying overly heavy backpacks on the vertebrae. The method of CSP employed a pre-test and post-test method to measure knowledge retention. Throughout the activity, students received education and vertebral examinations. The key indicators for the CSP were the level of understanding gained regarding backpacks and the effects of excessive weight on vertebral health. The results of CSP indicated a significant increase in knowledge among the students at SMA 2 Padang, with all participants achieving perfect scores of 100 on the post-test. The vertebral examinations did not show any abnormalities, such as kyphosis or scoliosis. The conclusion of CSP successfully enhanced students' understanding of backpack weight and the potential negative impacts of carrying excessive weight on the vertebrae.

Abstract

Headset usage has become increasingly common today, facilitating work and communication. However, prolonged use of headsets, especially at high sound frequencies, can damage the hair cells in the cochlea, leading to permanent hearing loss. This condition is known as Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). This research employed a literature review of journals published between 2013 and 2025. The journals were searched using keywords such as "headphone hearing loss," "noise-induced hearing loss personal listening devices," "safe listening guidelines," and "hearing impairment headset." The search results were presented narratively. The study found that NIHL is prevalent across all continents and is closely associated with headset usage. Specifically, using headsets at high volumes and for extended periods can lead to NIHL. This issue is particularly significant among Generation Z, with various studies indicating instances of hearing loss. The study concluded that there is a direct relationship between hearing loss and headset use at sound levels exceeding 85 dB for more than 8 hours a day.

Abstract

Organ transplantation is a vital medical solution that faces complex ethical dilemmas in the distribution of limited organs. This study aims to explore and analyze ethical considerations in the distribution of transplanted organs, focusing on the principles of justice and medical priority through a systematic literature review. The search methodology was conducted in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords "ethical considerations," "organ transplantation," "justice principles," and "medical priority" for articles published between 2015 and 2025. The principle of distributive justice in organ transplantation integrates multiple criteria that include medical urgency, likelihood of success, age, and healthy lifestyle, while rejecting discriminatory criteria such as economic status or gender. Medical priority influences transplant decisions through systems such as MELD, which emphasize medical urgency but create a dilemma between saving the most critical patients versus optimizing long-term success. Consensus across perspectives indicates that organ transplantation is ethically and religiously acceptable under certain conditions by fulfilling the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. The findings indicate the need for a framework that harmonizes principles of distributive justice with medical priorities within the context of local cultural and religious values. Practical implications include developing more comprehensive organ distribution guidelines, enhancing the capacity of healthcare professionals in ethical decision-making, and strengthening regulatory systems that accommodate multi-criteria complexity without compromising the principle of justice.

Abstract

Persistent Stapedial Artery (PSA) is a rare vascular anomaly of the middle ear that results from the failure of the stapedial artery to regress during embryonic development. Despite often being asymptomatic, PSA has significant clinical implications, particularly in middle ear surgery, where it increases the risk of intraoperative bleeding and nerve injury. This review was conducted through a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using the keywords “persistent stapedial artery,” “middle ear,” and “vascular anomaly.” Included articles comprised case reports, case series, and literature reviews from the past 10 years addressing embryology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of PSA. The findings indicate that PSA can be identified across different age groups, most often incidentally through temporal bone imaging or otologic procedures. In symptomatic cases, clinical features may include pulsatile tinnitus and conductive hearing loss. Temporal bone CT typically demonstrates the absence of the foramen spinosum and the presence of abnormal vascular channels in the tympanic cavity. Management varies, ranging from observation in asymptomatic cases to surgical intervention in patients with symptoms or complications. Although rare, recognition of PSA is critical to prevent intraoperative complications. Further studies are required to clarify the prevalence and define optimal therapeutic strategies. Meanwhile, heightened awareness among otolaryngologists and radiologists can improve diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.

Abstract

Shiatsu therapy is a complementary treatment approach rooted in Japanese tradition, based on the principle of applying pressure to specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow, improve health, and support well-being. This study aims to explore the effect of shiatsu therapy on reducing the risk of injury. This study utilized a qualitative methodology, conducting a literature review of journals published between 2015 and 2025 related to shiatsu therapy. The search employed the keywords "shiatsu massage," "shiatsu for muscle injury," and "effect of shiatsu." Findings from the literature were synthesized and presented in narrative form The findings indicate that shiatsu therapy may reduce the risk of injury by decreasing muscle tension, enhancing flexibility, and increasing range of motion. Furthermore, shiatsu therapy is associated with psychological benefits, including reduced stress and improved sleep quality, both of which are crucial for recovery. Therefore, shiatsu therapy represents a potential strategy for injury prevention and comprehensive health maintenance.

Abstract

Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of gambier (Uncaria gambir Roxb.), which is rich in catechin, a major bioactive compound with strong antioxidant activity. Variations in catechin content and antioxidant activity of Indonesian gambier are influenced by geographical origin, plant characteristics, and processing and extraction methods. This study aims to comprehensively review the catechin content and antioxidant activity of Indonesian gambier based on scientific publications from the last decade (2015–2025). A narrative literature review method was applied by collecting relevant articles from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Garuda databases. Selected studies were original research articles reporting quantitative data on catechin levels and/or antioxidant activity of gambier originating from Indonesia. The results indicate that Indonesian gambier, particularly from West Sumatra, exhibits high catechin content and strong antioxidant activity, although considerable variation exists among regions and extraction techniques. Advanced extraction and purification methods, including solvent optimization and ultrasonic-assisted extraction, were shown to enhance catechin concentration and antioxidant capacity. Indonesian gambier has significant potential as a natural antioxidant source, highlighting the need for quality standardization and further development of processing technologies to support value-added utilization and downstream product development.

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic progressive autoimmune inflammatory disease that damages joint cartilage and synovial tissue. Inflammation in RA activates pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), whose elevated levels contribute to disease progression. Aloe vera contains aloin, an active compound with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. This study aimed to determine the effect of aloin on IL-6 levels in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) with a rheumatoid arthritis model. This experimental study used a pretest-posttest control group design. Twenty-four rats were divided into four groups: K(-) normal control; K(+) positive control induced with CFA and treated with 50 mg Na diclofenac; P I induced with CFA and treated with 500 μg aloin; and P II induced with CFA and treated with 1000 μg aloin. IL-6 levels were measured using a Rat IL-6 ELISA kit and analyzed with an ELISA reader. Statistical analysis showed that aloin significantly reduced IL-6 levels (p<0.05). The 500 μg dose (P I) was the most effective, showing significant differences compared to other groups (p<0.05). Aloin administration reduces IL-6 levels in male rats with rheumatoid arthritis model.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, or both. Controlling blood glucose levels is the primary therapeutic goal to prevent complications. The use of medicinal plants as complementary therapy has gained increasing attention, one of which is aloe vera (Aloe vera), which contains aloin and antioxidant compounds with potential antihyperglycemic effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aloin extract administration on blood glucose levels in elderly obese male mice (Mus musculus) with type II diabetes mellitus. This laboratory experimental study employed a pretest–posttest control group design. The subjects were 25-week-old male mice weighing 30–40 grams with random blood glucose levels ≥176 mg/dL. The animals were divided into treatment and control groups. Blood glucose levels were measured before treatment and on days 14 and 28. Data were analyzed using SPSS. The mean baseline blood glucose levels in the treatment and control groups were 182.69 mg/dL and 184.75 mg/dL, respectively. On day 14, the levels decreased to 127.75 mg/dL and 134.88 mg/dL, and on day 28 to 104.62 mg/dL and 121.13 mg/dL. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in blood glucose levels following aloin extract administration. Aloin extract has an effect on lowering blood glucose levels in elderly obese male mice with type II diabetes mellitus.
