Abstract

This article examines Akutagawa Ryūnosuke's short story Yabu no Naka (1922) as a critical reflection of the socio-political transformations during Japan's Taishō era (1912-1926). Using a New Historicism approach, the study reveals how the story's multiperspective narrative technique not only challenges the notion of absolute truth but also represents the paradoxes of Japan's modernization, including class tensions, gender dynamics, and legal authority. Through characters such as the woodcutter, the priest, the bandit Tajōmaru, and the samurai's wife Masago, Akutagawa portrays a society caught between traditional values and Western modernity. The article concludes that Yabu no Naka is a brilliant sociological portrait of truth's relativity and the complexities of social change in the Taishō era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation under the leadership of President Xi Jinping with more than 100 countries in the Indo-Pacific region as a geo-economic order of developmentalism in the Indo-Pacific region to rival the United States (US) with its liberalism. BRI offers developmentalism based on investment-driven economic growth and infrastructure boom. BRI is also a geoeconomic phrase that shows China's geopolitical interest in controlling at least 45 percent of the world economy, whose potential lies along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road. This explanatory research tries to explore further the grand strategy carried out by China in a transformation from the previous leadership era of Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Hu Jintao, to Xi Jinping. Then, BRI expanded, as Chinese investment in infrastructure expanded throughout the Indo-Pacific. The data was drawn from a literature study spread across official Chinese government websites (china.gov), journal editors, online media, and e-book provider sites. The findings highlight the declining role of the US in the international world under the leadership of Donald Trump, so that it a strategic opportunity for China to overtake the US. However, the US is no longer the only world hegemon. China is trying to introduce developmentalism as a counter-order to the liberalism that has been promoted by the US.

Abstract

Despite indicating the development of literature in a modern world, Wattpad allows any type of influence to enter its platform. Many people are under the age of adulthood, but they are writing popular poems. Wattpad’s poetry itself has many images related to sadness. This research aims to study enthusiasm over sadness in Wattpad’s poetry. The method was based on a qualitative-quantitative mixed method. It is found that the images of sadness revolve around guilt, depression, loneliness, trauma, and betrayal. Based on the qualitative approach, findings show that depression’s image gets portrayed more than the rest. This article proposes to conduct a study of Wattpad literature based on popular works and also to use a qualitative approach to investigate the content of the platform itself. The neutrality of Wattpad’s comments is considered non-canonical from a quantitative sentiment analysis point of view and, therefore, requires greater attention for future research.
