Abstract

Abstract

Timor deer (Rusa timorensis) is native species in Indonesia that faces many threatening issues. Studies related to the health aspects of Timor deer are considered essential to provide some information related to deer health management in captivity. Deer handling procedures in captivity in Indonesia are commonly carried out with physical restraint. Physical restraint in animals is known to cause various changes in animals’ clinical and hematological values. This study aimed to determine the clinical and hematological parameters of Timor deer under physical restraint in captivity. This study used ten Timor deer that consisted of five stags and five hinds. The deer was positioned in a chute, then continued with the physical examination and blood sampling. Parameters observed in this study are clinical and hematological parameters. This study showed that clinical parameters of Timor deer under physical restraint have significant differences between sex groups, except for respiration rate parameters. Hematological parameters of physically restrained Timor deer did not show significant differences between sex groups, except for basophil parameters. This study concluded that physical restraint could affect the clinical and hematological parameters of Timor deer.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of age on the biochemistry profiles of aceh cattle, which  included examinations of: total protein (TP), albumin, globulin, albumin/globulin ratio (A/G), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatine kinase (CK), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and magnesium (Mg) . Sixteen clinically healthy aceh cattle aged 2-4 years old, and 16 aceh cattle aged 4-6 years old were purposively selected for the study. Blood samples were drawn from the jugular vein and subjected to blood biochemistry measurements using commercial kits. The results showed that serum concentrations of TP, globulin, AST and Ca of aceh cattle were significantly (P0.05) higher in age group 4-6 years old, while ALP activity was significantly (P0.05) higher in age group 2-4 years old. In conclusion, age must be considered as a factor when interpreting the blood biochemistry profiles of aceh cattle.

Abstract

Multiple pathogenic agents, such as dirofilariasis and ehrlichiosis coinfection in the dog, cause coinfection disease. This paper aims to elucidate the diagnosis and therapy technique of dirofilariasis and ehrlichiosis coinfection disease in a dog. The owner brought a 4-year-old female dog named Lua to Rvet Clinic Tajur Halang Bogor with complaints of always painting when doing activities and lying down. The dog was just adopted one month from the shelter with many ticks and mosquitoes in the cage. The dog was diagnosed with dirofilariasis and ehrlichiosis by physical examination and laboratory tests. The laboratory tests included radiography, haematology, blood smear, and antigen test by SNAP® 4Dx® Plus Test (IDEXX, US). The dog was given doxycycline 10 mg/kg BW BID orally for three weeks, vitamin B12 0.025mg/kg BW BID orally for three weeks, furosemide 2 mg/kg BW SID orally for one week, Coenzyme-Q10 SID orally for three weeks, and selamectin topical drop every month for three months. A blood smear on the 21st day after therapy did not show microfilariae in 20 hpf with three repetitions. It means the therapy combinations are used effectively to reduce microfilariae and maintain the clinical sign of a dog due to dirofilariasis accompanied by ehrlichiosis.

Abstract

Chemotherapy drug “cyclophosphamide (SP)” can trigger oxidative stress that causes hematotoxicity and myelotoxicity, therefore an agent that can suppress the negative effects of cyclophosphamide is needed. Boswellic acid is an herbal medicine that has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of boswellic acid (BA) in hematology parameter rats induced by cyclophosphamid. Animal were allocated in to six groups, each group consists of 5 rats, the KS: healthy group, KSP: cyclophosphamide group; KSD: comparison group, and BA groups (K1;K2;K3). The treatment groups were given cyclophosphamide (SP) at dose of 150 mg/kg body weight (BW) i.p. The BA groups (K1,K2,K3) were given BA at dose of 250 mg/kg BW orally for 6 consecutive days and SP on day 1 (K1), day 4 (K2), day 6 (K3). The results showed that BA administration (K2 and K3) can help increase/maintain the amount of hematological parameters including hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythrocytes. Administrating BA for 6 days consecutively before SP (K3) has shown best results on hematological parameters than the others including the comparison group. These results suggest that BA may have a potential herbal therapeutic agents that can mitigate cyclophosphamide-induced hematotoxicity manifestations.

Abstract

Plant extract is one of the functional ingredients to support health and immune system. Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is known to have a strong effect on immunomodulatory function. Its bitter taste and characteristic smell will affect the palatability of a final product. The palatability is important for product development in the pet food industry. The palatability defines cat’s preference and acceptance of a product. This research was aimed to determine the palatability of functional foods containing black cumin’s extract in domestic shorthair cats (Felis catus). The modified two bowl test was used in this study. Domestic shorthair cats aged 1-6 years, 7 spayed females and 2 neutered males, unvaccinated, and clinically healthy were participated in the study. Three bowls of food containing 89,1 mg; 222,75 mg; and 445,5 mg concentration of black cumin extract were offered to cats simultaneously. The first choice consumed, the duration of food consumed, and the amount of food intake were evaluated. A significant difference (p<0,05) was observed in the first choice consumed. The duration of food consumed, and the amount of food consumed were not found a significant difference. Based on all observations, this study indicates the food containing 222,75 mg concentration of black cumin is more palatable compared with other foods. The result of this study will be the foundation of the next research. Keywords: black cumin, cats, food, palatability

Abstract

Rhipicephalus sanguineus is one of the vectors that could induce diseases in dogs. A physical examination and haematology test could examine the dog's condition with tick infestation. Five dogs, beagle breeds from Veterinary Teaching Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences, IPB University, have been examined for physical examination and CBC test. A haematology test was performed using a haematology analyzer and made the blood smear. Physical examination showed that 60% of dogs have a tick infestation, 80% have pallor, 60% have pruritus, 40% have crusted skin, and 100% have wounds in extremities. However, the body temperature and heart rate were relatively normal. Complete blood count test showed that red blood cells (RBC), peak cells volume, and haemoglobin (Hb) decreased (80%), MCHC increased (40%), thrombocytopenia (100%), leukopenia (40%), lymphocytopenia (60%), neutropenia (10%) and monositopenia (80%). The blood smear result showed all dogs have positive blood parasites, with the highest percentage being the third dog (0.056%). From the physical examination, CBC, and blood smear, it can be concluded that dogs with tick infestation would experience anaemia that showed by RBC, PCV, decreasing number of platelet and positive blood parasite.

Abstract

Several pre-analytical variables influence hematological results, including anticoagulant use, storage temperature, and time between blood sample collection and analysis. Delayed sample analysis owing to prolonged storage could result in erythrogram profiles, which could complicate the interpretation of the resulting data. This study investigated the erythrogram profile of tripotassium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (K3EDTA) in blood samples stored for 48 h at 4°C. Ten healthy blood samples of Ongole crossbred cattle were collected into K3EDTA tubes from the jugular or coccygeal veins and analyzed for erythrogram profiles (erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit value, and erythrocyte morphology). Blood sample analysis for the control (0 h) was performed within ± 1.5 hours after collection, then the samples were refrigerated (4°C) and analyzed at 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, and 48 h. The results showed increased (p < 0.05) erythrocyte counts and hematocrit values after 9–24 and 6–48 h of storage, respectively. There was a significant difference in erythrocyte diameter between 0 h and other time observations (p < 0.05). Echinocytes were observed at 0 h of storage and continued to increase up to 48 h. Hypochromasia was also found at 6 to 48 hours of storage. Therefore, the analysis of blood samples for erythrogram parameters should be performed as soon as possible, preferably within three hours after collection, to ensure clinically reliable results.
