Abstract

The ability to think critically is one of the abilities students must possess. Students’ critical thinking skills have not been encouraging. There is a need for learning that can improve this ability, one of which is advocacy learning. The study aims to increase students’ critical thinking skills with open-ended mathematical problems in advocacy mathematics learning. This study is a nonequivalent control group design with a pre-test post-test control group. Sampling using cluster random sampling, randomization was carried out in classes at Junior High School 4 Bandung by taking two classes. Data analysis used Mann-Whitney, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey. The results showed that students treated with an advocacy approach by giving open-ended questions had better mathematical critical thinking skills than those who received conventional learning. Also, students with high prior knowledge had better critical thinking skills compared to the other two groups. This research implies that the advocacy can be used as an alternative to learning mathematics for students with high prior knowledge.

Abstract

This study attempts to identify the existence of asymmetric volatility in the Islamic capital market in Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic. The paper employs the symmetric analysis of the GARCH (1,1) model and the asymmetric analysis of the TGARCH (1,1) model in order to identify Islamic capital market behaviour during the first 200 days after the first Covid-19 cases were confirmed. We used the daily closing prices of the Indonesia Sharia Stock Index (ISSI). The symmetric analysis of the GARCH (1,1) model revealed that the current value of return on the ISSI does not have a significant impact on its future value. On the other hand, the TGARCH (1,1) model showed that the asymmetric parameter coefficient was positive and statistically significant. Good news and bad news does not have the same level of impact on the volatility of returns on the ISSI. Furthermore, coefficients αi and γi in the variance equation indicate that good news has a higher volatility impact than bad news. The results indicate that investors should not to worry about the bad news effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, while the government should continue the mitigation of the spread of the coronavirus along with its economic recovery policy.

Abstract

This study examines higher order mathematical thinking skills in terms of differences in school status (public and private) and gender differences (male and female). All madrasah aliyah students in the city of Yogyakarta became the subject of this research population. The sample subjects of this study were 83 students from one public school and four private schools which were selected using a stratified sampling technique. The Higher Order Mathematical Thinking Skills Test became the instrument in this study. Two-way analysis of variance is the technical data analysis used in this study. This study concludes that students' high order mathematical thinking skills are still low. This study also concluded that there was no difference between the higher order mathematical thinking skills of public madrasah aliyah students and private madrasah aliyah students and there was no difference between the higher order mathematical thinking skills of female and male students. Another conclusion is that there is no interaction between school status and student gender on higher order mathematical thinking skills.

Abstract

This research is a quantitative analytical survey research with an explanatory method in which the researcher attempts to explain to what extent the effect of learning mathematics on the results of mid-semester assessments for class VIII students in one of the junior high schools in Tangerang Regency. The sample of this research is students in class VIII. The sample selection was done randomly by taking 31 students from a total of 70 students. In collecting data related to student learning, we distributed a simple questionnaire by google form and to obtain data on the results of the mid-semester assessment of our students, we collaborated with the mathematics teacher in charge of the school. The results of this study stated that the way students learn in learning mathematics, especially in online learning, is said to have an effect of 11.45% on the results of the students' midterm assessment. the way to learn in online learning is divided into four sub categories of learning methods, including: how to take math lessons online, how to learn math independently at home, how to study math textbooks, and how to face math exams. Of these four sub-categories, three of them are in the good category in their implementation, while the sub-category of how to learn in online learning is in the sufficient category which indirectly means that there is still a need for re-evaluation related to the mechanism for implementing mathematics online learning.

Abstract

One of the cognitive skills that students must have is problem-solving ability. Therefore, a standardized test is needed to measure this ability. However, until now, the tests used to measure mathematical problem-solving ability were not standardized. This research aims to develop a valid and practical mathematical problem-solving test in the discussion of triangles and rectangles. This research is part of the RD 4D type with steps: Defined (analysis to develop a test), Design (designing a problem-solving test form), and Develop (expert judgment and small group trials). The instrument in this research was the validation sheet used by the validator to assess each test item. The data analysis technique used the Aiken method for expert judgment and qualitative descriptive for development testing. The result is a valid and practical mathematical problem-solving test because the V-Aiken value is more than 0.532. Based on this, the instrument can be used to measure the mathematical problem-solving ability of junior high school students in the discussion of triangles and rectangles.

Abstract

Nowadays ICT is rising rapidly, although in fact the effort of mathematics teaching quality is still concerning in cognitive aspect while forgetting non-cognitive aspect. The neglect of affective aspect as well emotional quotient in mathematics teaching contributes to social situation that hamper national character development. So, the development of ICT must be preferred as an alternative for mathematics teaching in order to extend emotional quotient towards national character development. It stands to reason that due to the development of ICT has another side that is likely to increase emotional skills in social life.
