Abstract

Complex problem solving" ability as a 21st-century skill students need to solve dynamically changing problems. Students of prospective mathematics teachers are said to master complex problem situations if possible, therefore a learning model is needed that can improve the ability to solve complex problems for prospective mathematics teacher students, one of which uses problem-based learning (PBL). The purpose of this study is to get an overview of improving the ability to solve complex problems of prospective mathematics teacher students after learning with the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model at Tidar University with the subject of second semester students of the Mathematics Education Study Program. This research will be conducted using a quasi-experimental method, with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest research design. Research instruments in the form of complex problem solving tests, observation sheets on learning implementation, and interview guidelines. The results showed that PBL is more effective than conventional learning on complex problem-solving skills. In addition, the results also show that problem-based learning (PBL) is effective in improving the complex problem-solving ability of prospective mathematics teacher students. The results of the increase test with N-Gain obtained an average of 0.43 which belongs to the category of moderate increase

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the ethnomathematics-based mathematics teaching materials for junior high school students. This analytical research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects are junior high school mathematics teachers and students in Magelang. The objects include teachers’ and students’ responses to teaching materials and the learning process. The data are collected using a questionnaire sheet, observations, and interviews. The data are analyzed using the Miles-Huberman Interactive Analysis, which consists of data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results show that (1) teaching materials are available for the learning process; (2) teaching materials often used are textbooks and videos; (3) all teaching materials follow core (KI) and essential competencies (KD); (4) the students find it challenging to understand the materials contained in the available teaching materials; (5)the teaching materials need to be improved by providing concrete examples; (6) ethnomathematics-based learning models have not been implemented optimally, and; (7) the students agree to the development of ethnomathematics-based textbooks as the learning resources which makes them easier to understand the materials. The results of literature and field studies show that students need ethnomathematical-based teaching materials to improve their understanding. The cultural products that will be used in this research are the products of Magelang culture.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to understand how the cultural elements of Surabaya’s Tugu Pahlawan Monument can be used to introduce basic numeracy in primary school, especially concepts related to plane geometry. The goal is to show that cultural landmarks can offer real and relatable examples for young learners. Method: The research was conducted through a qualitative ethnographic approach. The researcher observed the monument directly, spoke with on-site guides and staff who were familiar with its history, and documented various architectural and visual features. All information gathered from notes, photographs, and short interviews was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman framework to identify patterns that relate to mathematical ideas. Findings: The study found that many parts of the monument display clear geometric forms. These include rectangles, squares, circles, triangles, trapezoids, rhombuses, and even a ten-sided figure. Such shapes appear in the floor patterns, plaques, murals, decorative ornaments, museum structures, and the wheels of military displays. Each of these elements can be directly connected to geometry topics taught in primary classrooms. Significance: The findings highlight the potential of local heritage as a meaningful resource for mathematics education. When students see that the shapes they learn in class appear in a monument tied to their own city’s history, mathematical concepts become easier to grasp and more engaging. This approach supports early numeracy while also helping learners build a stronger connection to their cultural environment.
