Abstract

Milk is an animal food source that plays a role in human life because it contains various nutritional components. Indonesia’s level of milk consumption is still relatively low. As one of an attempt to increase milk consumption, various kinds of processed milk products with a more modish aroma and form were made. However, not all of the quality of the processed milk products sold can be guaranteed. The aim of this study is to determine the quality of milk samples obtained from milk retails located around the students settlement area of IPB University’s Dramaga and Cilibende campus. The total of retails around campus obtained from the survey were 13, so 39 samples were bought. Milk samples taken were plain milk without an addition of sugar, flavor variants or ice cubes. The results obtained by the average value of density, content of fat, protein, lactose, dry matter, non-fat dry matter and pH of milk samples in Dramaga region are 1.0190 g/mL, 2.66%, 2.02%, 3.03%, 8.18%, 5.52% and 6.89. Milk samples in Cilibende region are 1.026 g/mL, 3.80%, 2.75%, 4.13%, 11.34%, 7.54% and 6.54. Based on pasteurization and sterilization perfectness test, it was discovered that all samples were pasteurized milk, even as much as 30.8% were sterilized milk. From this study, it can be concluded that the ready-to-drink milk sold in retails around the students settlements of IPB University has poor quality because it does not meet the minimum standard requirements of SNI No. 01-3951-1995 about Pasteurized Milk.

Abstract

Ectoparasite infestation is a problem that is often found in laying hens. Mites and chicken lice are ectoparasites that are spread in tropical countries and become a nuisance in chicken farms. The purpose of this study was to measure the prevalence and degree of infestation, and distribution of poultry mite in laying hens. This research was conducted in October-December 2018 in several areas of Java Island. The research areas include Kuningan and Bogor (West Java), Blitar and Kediri (East Java), and Purbalingga (Central Java). The study was conducted on 13 laying hens with a sample of 20 chickens in each farm. Chickens were taken directly from the cage and carried out a physical examination and observation of the presence of poultry mites. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to see the relationship between chicken body region and the number of each mite, as well as the effect of cage material on the degree of mite infestation. The results showed that all the farms studied were positively infested by poultry mites. The identification results showed that the types of mites that infested were Ornithonyssus bursa (positive on 3 farms) and Megninia ginglymura (positive on 13 farms). The highest mite population was in Farms 2 and 7 with an infestation prevalence of 100% in both farms. The thorax was the most common part of the body in O. bursa infestation, while M. ginglymura was most commonly found in the tail of poultry. It was concluded that there were two species of poultry mite infestations with different prevalence and degree of infestations on 13 commercial laying hens farms in Java Island.

Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: ikan asin; serangga pengganggu, lalat.

Abstract

Ability to infestation and abundance of parasitic mites in Aedes spp. larvae cannot be separated from the influence of various factors. Ecological factors have been suggested to play a role determine the presence of parasitic mites that under certain conditions become a key factor in determining the abundance of parasitic mites on Aedes spp. larvae. The aim of this study to determine the ecological factors affect the abundance of parasitic mites on Aedes spp. larvae in Bogor Regency. Capturing of Aedes spp. larvae was performed directly on the habitats found in indoor and outdoor. Capturing mites in the body of Aedes spp. larvae was performed using insect forceps. Ecological factors measured were dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, temperature, and total dissolved solid (TDS). The influence of ecological factors was analyzed using regression and correlation analysis. The result of mite identification has been obtained three species of mites that are Halacarus sp., Histiostoma sp., and Hydrozetes sp. The result indicated that total dissolved solid (TDS) and temperature was the factors that determined the abundance of mites. The factors of pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO) did not determine the abundance of parasitic mites of Aedes spp. larvae. The research result can be further developed as a new alternative to Dengue Hemorraghic Fever control and provide information on parasitic mites that infest Aedes spp. larvae. In addition, this results become an early step in controlling of Aedes spp. strategy platform by the parasitic mites.
