Abstract

Culex quinquefasciatus is the main vector of limfatic filariasis in Pekalongan City. Sterile Insect Tehnique could be an alternative vector control efforts to eliminate filariasis. The success of this technique is depend on the ability of laboratory-reared sterile males with the wild-type females. Indicator of SIT Aplication is determined by the value of the mating competitiveness and sterility to Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera:Culicidae). The design of the research is an experimental. Gamma irradiation on the pupae (age . 15 hours) with the doses of 0 Gy, 60 Gy, 65 Gy,70 Gy, 75 Gy and 80 Gy in BATAN Jakarta. Male mosquitoes which emerged from the pupa then matting with a normal female. This research observed the mean of females laying eggs ,fecundity, fertility and mating competitiveness. This experimental research was conducted in the laboratory and the data were analyzed by ANOVA.The result showed that irradiation at the trial doses had an effect on fertility of Culex quinquefasciatus, but not had significant effect on fecundity and mating competitiveness . A dose of 70 Gy is the optimum dose with a fertility rate of 1.8% (sterility 98.2%) and C indexs 0,568 can be recommended for futher semi field assays. The number of sterile males were six times compared with the wild population to increase the chances of mating with wild-type females.

Abstract

Sebatik Island, Nunukan District, North Kalimantan Province, lies on the border of Indonesia and Malaysia. Sebatik Island is one of the malaria endemic regions in Nunukan District. In 2013, 61 people in Sungai Nyamuk Village tested positive for Plasmodium falciparum from a population of 7,525 people with an of API 8.11 per 1,000 population. A research about habitat characteristics of Anopheles spp. larvae was done in Sungai Nyamuk Village, Nunukan District, North Kalimantan Province from August 2010 to January 2012. This research aimed to analyse the characteristics of breeding places of Anopheles spp. The larvae wastaken from various types of breeding places with detention and rearing until adult mosquitoes, and identified using larvae identification key. The results showed that there were four types of potential breeding places of Anopheles spp. ie lagoon, ditches, unused fish ponds and marshes. Overall, larvae of Anopheles spp. comprising five species, namely An. vagus, An. subpictus, An. sundaicus, An. indefinitus and An. peditaeniatus. Types of potential breeding places were dominated by the unused fish pond, with standing water and muddy substrate, located around settlements surrounded by grasses, shrubs and trees. The unused fish pond containedof aquatic plants such as grasses and moss. Predators were found such as of a dragonfly nymph, crustaceans, tadpoles and small fish. The unused fish pond was a potensial breeding places Anopheles spp. and important for malaria vector borne diseases in Sungai Nyamuk Villages. Early malaria vector control at larval stage was a critical point of the success of malaria elimination programs in endemic areas.

Abstract

The incidence of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is still a public health problem in Indonesia. Observations over a period of 20 to 25 years since the beginning of  the discovering of the disease, has show the increase of the diseases incidence every five years. The purpose of this study are 1) study the diversity of Aedes’s mosquitoes in Sukabumi City, 2) measure the Aedes population based on the number of eggs and ovitrap index, and 3) to know the correlation between ovitrap index and house condition. Aedes eggs were collected from 14 villages in Sukabumi City that has the highest incidence rate, started from May 2015 until August 2015. Collecting eggs is done by setting a trap eggs (ovitrap) as many as 230 pieces in 115 homes (indoor and outdoor). The results showed that Ae. aegypti were found inside houses and Ae. albopictus were outside houses. The number of eggs collected from ovitrap inside the houses were three times more than those collected from outside. Ovitrap index inside houses was 60%, or 1.6 times more than the ovitrap index outside the houses (37%) in 14 villages in Sukabumi. Houses with poor ventilation and sanitation increased the risk 3.09 times of number of ovitrap index. The results of this study could be use as basic information for the communities to improved environment hygiene through reduced mosquito breeding sites, thus degraded the incidence of dengue
