Abstract

Abstract: The ability to use technology is one of the important factors in learning English in the Kurikulum Merdeka in Junior High Schools, however, most teachers in Agam Regency experience problems mastering these digital skills. This mentoring program is one of the efforts to facilitate Junior High School English teachers with digital literacy skills as a Partnership program between the Agam Regency Government and the Jakarta State University. As a follow-up to the results of multi-year research in the previous year, this program was held face-to-face for four full days, 23 – 26 June 2022, involving five lecturers and three students. Abstract

The emergence of mobile learning applications facilitates the pedagogical approach to developing students’ critical thinking. However, there is a scarcity of investigation on mobile learning applications’ impact on developing critical thinking as the learning outcome. Thus, this study reports the effect of a mobile learning application, ‘English with Noni’, designed to infuse critical thinking instruction in EFL classes on students’ critical thinking level by employing a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the critical thinking level of 65 students of a junior high school in Jakarta, Indonesia, by administering a post-test assessed using a SOLO rubric. Semi-structured interviews to explore students’ responses from using the ‘English with Noni’ application and class observation contributed to the qualitative findings. The quantitative result showed that the critical thinking level of the experimental group using this application improved significantly more than the controlled group did. The qualitative result suggested that the experimental group had positive responses to using it. They confirmed that it was interesting. They also admitted that it contributed to developing their critical thinking (i.e., predicting, providing reasons, expressing viewpoints, finding alternatives, and making conclusions), language skills (i.e., listening, reading, and writing), and sub-skill (vocabulary). The findings imply that critical thinking activities and learning affordances provided in the ‘English with Noni’ application is a potential tool to enhance students’ critical thinking infused in the EFL class, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic situation, by emphasizing self-regulated learning.

Abstract

This second-year study which took place in 2022 aims to investigate, determine and design a learning management system (LMS) design through Moodle and Content Management System (CMS) through Google Sites for Critical Literacy course in Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UNJ. Critical Literacy course aims to prepare the students to have the ability to interpret text critically and communicate actively in the multimodal context in a hybrid learning process. The study was conducted with the qualitative approach with The Successive Approximation Model (SAM) iterative phase research design. Throughout the Savvy Start and Iterative Design Phase, the phase rotated through design, prototype, and review to make sure students and lecturers can contribute and support the design direction. Forty-four students and one lecturer generates as participants in this study. Two kinds of modules were developed during the study, namely: (1) LMS on www.onlinelearning.unj.ac.id and (2) CMS on Google Sites. LMS and CMS modules for the Critical Literacy course were: (1) Defining Critical Literacy, (2) Literacy, Critical Literacy, Multi-literacy, Multimodal, (3) Data Literacy, Fact, and Hoax (4) Analyzing Multimodal Text (5) Reflective Notes (6) Mid-term Test (7) Analyzing Various Texts (8) Wrap Up (9) Final Semester Individual Project. These nine headings were categorized into four topics namely: Theories, Tests, Reflection, and Projects. The theories can be used to deliver learning materials and examples in the form of text, video, slides, QR codes, and websites. Meanwhile, the test could be used to provide assignments, exercises, and learning evaluations. Reflection was used to provide the students with opportunities to do both self- and peer-reflection on the learning processes. Finally, the projects were used to involve the students with problem-solving skills and self-regulated learning. The study’s findings showed that LMS and CMS could handle the complexity of teaching Critical Literacy in the digital environment. The Critical Literacy course should have attracted interest or participation from the students to familiarize, encourage, fulfill, assess, and comprehend the various texts. This LMS and CMS also provided students with class discussion, credible references, project-based activities, and criticism on literacy topics.

Abstract

Problems in learning writing did not seem to find a bright spot in education. Teachers tried to find solutions by evaluating learning materials and learning media. Recently, the solution of the writing problem had become a major concern. Thus, this research aimed to design technology-based learning materials referred to interactive videos with target learner seventh graders. This methodology used design development research (DDR). Data were sourced from junior high schools in Jabodetabek. The main data for designing were the results of the analysis learning materials, learning objectives, and interview result with teacher. The design of interactive video paid attention to the main aspects including the characteristics of interactive video, learning objectives, and students' needs. In addition, time efficiency was also important to maintain students' motivation in learning. Through interactive video, students' engagement in interacting with the learning content was the key to successful learning. Therefore, the result of this design showed this media has high potential to be implemented in writing class.

Abstract

For students majoring in education, the teaching internship program is mandatory. Along with employing the Kurikulum Merdeka in schools, student teachers must also prepare to use it through the teaching internship program. This study aims to investigate student teachers’ readiness and challenges for the teaching internship program. This study employs both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to achieve its objectives. In all, 40 English Language Education Study Program student teachers batch 2020 at Universitas Negeri Jakarta completed questionnaires and participated in Focused Group Discussions focusing on their readiness and challenges based on key teaching competences, enabling competences, professional conduct, and personality. The research uncovered student teachers level of readiness and challenges in 'administration', 'methodology: knowledge and skills', 'assessment', and 'lesson and course preparation' to Kurikulum Merdeka as ‘developing readiness’ and ‘mostly challenging’. However, they perceived ‘approaching readiness’ and views them as ‘mostly not challenging’ aspects as in 'digital media implementation,' 'professional behavior', 'personality', and 'intercultural skills'. Because prior studies did not cover these areas all at once, the knowledge obtained through this research study applies locally.
