Abstract

When assessing a country’s level of education, referring to their Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scores can be stated as an overused trend, one that has been criticised as PISA alone is not the most perfect way to judge a country’s readiness. To address this weakness, this study will also refer to the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), another world-class test that specifically focuses on literacy, yet has been underutilised in reading-related research. This paper is a case study on three countries which have shown different levels of performances. Using PISA and PIRLS reports as the main data and general literature review to supplement the contextual details of the reported results, the analysis focused on how Macao, Qatar and Jordan employ diverse strategies to cultivate and elevate literacy skills among their students. Results show that Macao is a leader in government-led efforts that focused on developing teacher competence, Qatar develops their children’s literacy through collaboration and competition, and Jordan focuses on all language skills in balance (with few programs exclusively concerned on reading competence). The novelty of the findings is its comparison of two international assessments that have a different scope, as PISA offers a holistic view of contextual factors affecting literacy whereas PIRLS covers information that are crucial for understanding early literacy development.

Abstract

This study aims to adapt CEFR in developing an integrative approach-based teaching material model for a pre-basic BISOL class. The method used in this research is the development research design by Borg and Gall. This study was development research. The stages are identification of the problem, formulation of a hypothetical draft model; feasibility testing by experts; product revision; and test product effectiveness. The data were collected through survey techniques, interviews, and documentation. The needs identification results revealed data encompassing 10 themes, 5 tasks per theme, and diverse evaluations comprising theory, in-class practice, and real-world field assignments, both on an individual and group basis. These identified needs require alignment with CEFR A1 for the development of BISOL learning. These findings were subsequently incorporated into the design of the teaching material model, and the results indicated that tailoring CEFR to BISOL as an integrative language teaching material model was feasible for application in the classroom, as assessed by experts. The implications suggest that integrating CEFR into BISOL is highly feasible for the development of teaching materials, and teachers can leverage this instructional model to enhance students' proficiency in the Indonesian language..

Abstract

As a post-developmental study, this qualitative research is intended to evaluate teachers continued experience in adopting My English Step (MES) digital learning material and promoting inclusion in Differentiated Instruction (DI) at junior high school (JHS). Nine junior high school teachers with MES experience were selected through focus group interviews. Research data were achieved by transforming recorded interviews into verbatim transcription. Three corresponding flows of activity were conducted during data analysis: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The consistency of findings was triangulated by comparing findings from interviews to those in documents on teachers adoption of MES in class and the literature review. The first finding shows that experiences have influenced MES-usability and teachers intent to adopt MES. Previously perceived as an English learning platform, MES is now posited as an adaptive digital learning object. This digital educational resource can be modified and adhered to its contextual connection. Next, improvements in content and functionality are requisite for MES to be adhered to in English learning in the enactment of Kurikulum Merdeka (KurMer). The last finding affirmed that teacher modification questioning strategies can promote inclusion when adopting and adhering to MES to KurMer. Future research should explore the extent to which students potential to learn English is improved by adopting MES.

Abstract

This study investigated the incorporation of Profil Pelajar Pancasila in digital learning materials for Junior High School students. This study applied the content analysis method, the data of which were learning materials provided on Myenglishstep.com for every level of Junior High School. The data were analyzed by comparing them with 19 indicators which were derived from six dimensions of Profil Pelajar Pancasila. The results showed that 230 data fulfilled all 19 indicators and were incorporated into various forms of learning materials. The highest occurrences (80 data) were found in the fifth dimension which is to think critically (Dimensi Berfikir Kritis) while the lowest (10 data) occurred in global diversity (Dimensi Kebhinekaan Global). In addition, the values of Profil Pelajar Pancasila were mostly incorporated through task instructions (98 data), followed by live worksheets (64 data), videos (34 data), and audios (13 data). This result indicates that the digital learning materials available on the website of Myenglishstep.com are aligned with the character-building values proposed in Profil Pelajar Pancasila, thus, they become worth trying to support English language learning at the Junior High levels in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the way Digital Citizenship Competencies (DCC) are incorporated into digital learning materials (DLM) in a web-based learning platform called myenglishstep.com. By compiling 115 DLM of 7th up to 9th Grade and utilizing the content analysis method, the finding shows skills dimension is found to be the highest incorporation, followed by the knowledge dimension. In contrast, the attitudes and values dimension showed low occurrences compared to the previous dimension. Knowledge, skills, and attitudes dimensions of DCC are mostly incorporated in all DLM categories through tasks, contents, and visuals, while values dimensions are incorporated through contents for the most part and tasks. Therefore, these findings are expected to raise people's awareness of digital citizenship competencies and aid teachers and stakeholders in providing reliable and varied digital learning materials.
