Abstract

Introduction: Mental health significantly influences both adolescent emotional well-being and the likelihood of violence, as adolescents with strong mental health are better equipped to manage interpersonal conflicts and resist pressures that may otherwise lead to violence. This study explores how perceptions of mental health among teachers and adolescents contribute to emotional resilience and provide a foundation for anti-violence character development. Methods: Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data was collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving ten informants—six students and four teachers—selected via purposive sampling to capture varied insights. Results: Results reveal that perceptions of mental health among both adolescents and teachers are diverse but commonly highlight the value of emotional and psychological stability. Furthermore, the role of family and early life experiences is consistently emphasized as essential in shaping mental health, affecting how adolescents manage emotions and conflicts. Findings also suggest that character traits developed from childhood and through formative experiences are instrumental in supporting an individual’s mental health and ability to respond to social stressors without resorting to violence. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the connection between teachers' and students' perceptions of mental health and character as a key strategy for preventing violence. The findings underscore the crucial role of collaboration among schools, families, and communities in creating a supportive environment for students' character development and mental well-being. The study’s implications highlight the necessity of comprehensive, school-based initiatives and educational policies that integrate mental health and character education. Educators are encouraged to adopt character-focused approaches, policymakers to formulate inclusive policies, and researchers to explore this issue across various socio-cultural settings to strengthen violence prevention efforts.

Abstract

Participation of informal sector workers in the Indonesian Social Security Employment Program (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) in Gorontalo City remains low. This condition is influenced by multiple factors, including individual characteristics, occupational conditions, and socio-economic status. Understanding these determinants is essential to improve coverage and protection for informal workers. This study aimed to identify the key factors associated with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participation among informal sector workers, particularly rickshaw drivers. This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design involving 342 informal sector workers selected through accidental sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that had undergone validity testing using item–total correlations (items accepted when r-count > r-table, p < 0.05) and reliability testing using Cronbach’s Alpha, with coefficients ≥ 0.70 indicating acceptable internal consistency. Data were analyzed through univariate analysis, bivariate binary logistic regression, and multivariate binary logistic regression to identify significant predictors of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participation. Bivariate analysis revealed that income, occupation, and perceptions of BPJS benefits were significantly associated with program participation. Multivariate logistic regression identified income as the most dominant predictor. The final regression model demonstrated good predictive ability, as indicated by satisfactory values of Nagelkerke R² and classification accuracy. Participation in BPJS Ketenagakerjaan among informal sector workers is influenced by various internal and external factors, with income emerging as the primary determinant. Efforts to increase participation should prioritize strategies that address these key influencing factors, particularly socio-economic barriers.

Abstract

Fruits contain a broad range of essential nutrients, including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, while vegetables serve as vital plant-based foods that help meet daily nutritional needs. Gorontalo Province is among the regions in Indonesia with the lowest fruit and vegetable intake, with 92.5% of the population not meeting the recommended ≥5 servings per day. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of flashcard-based education in improving knowledge of fruit and vegetable consumption among sixth-grade students at State Elementary School 59, East Gorontalo City. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. A total of 35 sixth-grade students were selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments included a closed-ended questionnaire with structured items and predetermined response options. Prior to data collection, the questionnaire underwent validity testing using Spearman’s rank correlation, where items with r-count > r-table (p < 0.05) were considered valid. Reliability testing was conducted using Cronbach’s Alpha, and all constructs achieved coefficients ≥ 0.70, indicating acceptable internal consistency. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test, followed by the Kruskal–Wallis test with Post Hoc analysis. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ knowledge after the flashcard educational intervention, with a p-value of 0.000. Interactive learning media such as flashcards enhanced students’ engagement, concentration, and comprehension, enabling them to better understand the nutritional benefits of fruits and vegetables through play-based learning activities. Flashcard-based education is effective in increasing students’ knowledge of fruit and vegetable consumption and serves as an engaging learning tool to support nutritional education in schools.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major public health problem with a continuously increasing prevalence. Dietary regulation is a key pillar in glycemic control for DM management. Palm sap (nira aren) is a traditional beverage reported to have a low glycemic index; however, public concerns regarding its potential alcohol content have raised controversy about its consumption among individuals with DM. This study aimed to determine the effect of nira beverage consumption on blood glucose levels and glycemic index in patients with diabetes mellitus. This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design involving 28 patients with diabetes mellitus. Data were collected through direct measurement of blood glucose levels using a glucometer before and after the intervention, while glycemic index was calculated based on standardized glycemic response procedures. Statistical analysis was performed using the paired t-test. The findings showed a statistically significant difference in blood glucose levels before and after nira beverage consumption in the intervention group (p = 0.000). In addition, glycemic index analysis demonstrated a significant difference (p = 0.001). Nira beverage consumption has a significant effect on blood glucose levels and glycemic index among patients with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Occupational accidents in the coconut flour industry in Gorontalo Regency remain a serious threat to workers, with an increasing incidence rate and a high risk of causing permanent disability. This study aims to analyze the risk factors for work-related accidents leading to disability among workers in the coconut flour industry of Gorontalo Regency. This research is a qualitative study utilizing a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The informants consisted of workers with disabilities resulting from occupational accidents, the person in charge of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), and OHS practitioners. Data analysis was performed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that accidents leading to disability are dominated by the sheller unit. These incidents are triggered by the interaction between unsafe actions and unsafe conditions. Behavioral factors include low OHS knowledge, rushed work attitudes to meet production targets, and non-compliance with the use of standardized Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). These conditions are exacerbated by substandard physical work environments, characterized by high room temperatures (32.3°C–33.7°C) and dim lighting (132–176 Lux), which significantly reduce worker concentration. Furthermore, the suboptimal implementation of OHSMS policies and management supervision increases the risk of fatalities.
