Abstract

Learning biology is about theory and practice while in the laboratory or environment. Animalia is one of the focuses of Biology and one of the topics that could not practice in the laboratory but should practice in the environment. Learning in an environment would give students any experiences. This study aims to report a case study that explores the experiences of prospective teacher students about learning outdoors through a herping activity. This research was taken from a university in Indonesia from June until December 2019. Data retrieval is taken through semi-structured interviews. Data analysis used the phenomenological design of 22 participants to be interviewed. The findings reveal that the challenges found in the field include field mastery, unpredictable weather, and finding the correct object. However, natural phenomena that are open in the wild become an attraction as bio-education develops for prospective teacher students. Understanding science material and science epistemological abilities is likened to a combination of hands-on activities students become complete with minds-on practices. For this reason, it is crucial when the learning process is packaged in frames that can stimulate prospective teacher students to be more active. The findings are how to combine formal learning in the classroom with wild herping activities to develop student bio-education.

Abstract

Deep learning is required to examine biological material, particularly abstract content, either in the laboratory alone or with internet literature. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of learning through practicum versus learning through a combination of practicum (real-world data) and online literature review in terms of the ability to represent the three-dimensional (3D) model of plant tissue structure in a plant anatomy course. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design in the posttest alone control group. This research used Purposive sampling to choose the research sample, which consisted of two classes of students enrolled in a plant anatomy course. ANOVA was used to analyze the data, with a significance level of 0.05. The results indicated a significant difference in learning when combined practicum was with online literature study visuospatial when practicum was used alone with a more excellent 3D model representation value in the class. Classes that combine an applied practicum with an online literature review have a grade point average of 73.61.

Abstract

Ageratum conyzoides L., locally known as Babandotan, is an important plant in particular in West Java, including in Bandung, due to its medicinal uses. Currently, climate change is known to influence the distribution of organisms by altering climates and making habitats suitable or not suitable. Then, this present study is aiming to use machine learning to model future distributions of A. conyzoides under climate change scenarios CMIP 5 RCP 8.5 until 2070 in Bandung areas. The A. conyzoides occurrences were sampled from nine locations in Bandung and its surrounding areas. Machine learning using the R platform and MaxEnt algorithm was used to develop species distribution modeling (SDM). The model was then simulated using RCP 2.6 and 8.5 scenarios for the years 2050 and 2070. The quality of the model was assessed using AUC values. The current SDM model shows suitable habitats for A. conyzoides are sizing 1250 km2, mostly located in Bandung (56%), Kota Bandung (24%), and Sumedang (16%). The AUC value was 0.964, showing that the resulting model is good. Climate change will affect A. conyzoides in the future. Based on the RCP model, suitable habitats for A. conyzoides will be shifted northward, eliminating the suitable habitats in the south of Bandung, as can be seen in 2070.

Abstract

Batik production in Indonesia is increasing from year to year. However, regarding environmental quality, it is feared that it will produce waste that pollutes the surrounding water bodies. This study aims to describe problems and solutions in improving the management of batik liquid waste in the city and district of Tasikmalaya (Cipedes and Sukaraja) using descriptive qualitative methods and the Miles and Huberman model. The results of the research using interview and observation methods show that most batik SMEs in these two areas have been unable to manage waste optimally. The problem arising from batik liquid waste is the contamination of residents' fish ponds, sewers, and bathtubs. Although there are three independent and communal WWTPs (Wastewater Treatment Plants) in Cipedes (MSME Agnessa, Deden, and riverbanks) as well as one independent WWTP in UMKM Sukapura "GJM," their utilization is still constrained by various natural and artificial factors. The role of the surrounding community is still low in understanding the existence and impact of batik waste around them.

Abstract

Kemudian Germane Cognitive Load (pemahaman setelah seluruh materi sistem indera tersampaikan) diperoleh nilai rata-rata 54,7 termasuk kategori sedang.

Abstract

Jakarta Bay is known as one of the marine ecosystems that have been contaminated by microplastics. Despite massive loads of microplasticcontamination, Jakarta Bay is also habitat to potential commercial fish species, including anchovy Stolephorus commersonnii and mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta. While information on the microplastic contents and their determining factors is still limited, the goal of this study was touse artificial neural networks (ANN) as a novel and useful tool to model the determinants of microplastic content in fish in Jakarta Bay, using fish weight and length as proxies. Inside the stomachs of S. commersonnii and R. kanagurta, the order of microplastics from the highest to thelowest was fiber > film > fragment > pellet. Based on the RMSE values of 3.199 for S. commersonnii and 2.738 for R. kanagurta, the ANNmodel of fish’s weight + length ~ pellet was found to be the best fitted model to explain the correlation of fish weight and length with microplastic content in the stomach. The results indicate that ANN is suitable for solving large, complex problems in determining and projecting microplastic contents and provides better estimates that can be used to manage R. kanagurta and S. commersonnii along with microplastic contamination threats.

Abstract

Drinking water is the main need of humans as living things. Over time, humans are more practical so that for drinking needs they prefer to use bottled drinking water or refill drinking water. The high demand for bottled water raises the number of drinking water companies that issue bottled drinking water products. However, the quality of bottled water still needs to be assessed because it is not through pasteurization or other processing. So the microbiological content remains to be investigated. This study aimed to determine the bacteriological content in bottled drinking water. This study uses the Most Probable Number (MPN) method to test its bacterial content and gamma ray radiation to test its radiosensitivity. The sample in this study was bottled drinking water of various brands circulating in the City of Tasikmalaya. Based on the research results obtained from 13 samples there is 1 sample containing E. coli which is code B1 with a total bacterial content of 7 cells per 100 ml. So it can be concluded L samples are known to contain E. coli as much as 1.9 x 105 cells per ml.
