Abstract

The practice of burning and stockpiling to reduce wood waste from the wood processing industry is not in line with the demands of clean production, environmentally friendly and sustainable industries. Pyrolysis technology can be used to produce bioenergy from wood waste. The temperature and the time of the pyrolysis process, the water content of materials, and the content of different yields between types of wood waste affect the bioenergy products produced. This study was aimed at determining the effect of wood waste form and condition on the quality and quantity of liquid smoke, tar, and charcoal. A Completely Randomized Design with two factors of treatments, i.e., waste forms and the drying process, was applied in this research. The results showed that the condition and shape of the material affect the volume of liquid smoke and the weight of the charcoal produced. The condition of the material without drying with high water content and the shape of the chunks produce more liquid smoke with an average yield of 191.14 mL and 186.37 mL, while the charcoal produced is higher in the condition of the material with drying and shaved form at 125.83 g and 115.62 g. The results of the test characteristics of grade 1 and 2 distillation liquid smoke meet the Japanese liquid smoke quality standards with phenol levels in the range of 26.66-35.94 mg GAE/mL sample and acidity levels of 16.91-58.9%. Keywords: Char; liquid smoke; pyrolysis; tar; wood waste. Abstract

The location of Cigeureung, Nagarasari Village, Cipedes District, Tasikmalaya City is a prominent hub for batik production in East Priangan, where a significant amount of liquid waste from batik dye is generated. Textile dyes are integral components of the batik-making process and encompass a multitude of heavy metals that possess the potential to contaminate the environment and negatively impact groundwater nutrients. Among these heavy metals, Hexavalent Chromium (Cr (VI)) stands out as a hazardous element for environmental well-being. In addition, batik liquid waste harbors many indigenous microorganisms capable of decomposing pigments. This study sought to ascertain the concentration of heavy metals and explore methods for their degradation through the utilization of biological agents, specifically microorganisms. In this particular instance, the Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) approach was employed to ascertain the concentration of Cr (VI) present in the textile dye, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Isolation is conducted to identify bacteria capable of degrading colors. This process involves isolating bacteria from liquid waste and subsequently identifying them visually and physiologically, following the guidelines outlined in the Bergeys Manual taxonomy book. The study revealed that batik liquid waste collected at various distances exhibited a Cr (VI) concentration below 0.04, thereby satisfying the criteria for environmental quality. In addition, batik liquid waste contains many genera of bacteria, including as Streptococcus, Bacillus, and Streptobacillus.

Abstract

Amphibians and their geographical distribution are threatened by climate change, including speciesin West Java, Indonesia. It is estimated that 300 amphibian species are threatened, including the familyDicroglossidae. At the same time, information on how climate change impacts amphibian species inIndonesia is very limited. This study aims to assess and model the suitable habitat for the least concernAsian brackish frog, Fejervarya cancrivora (Gravenhorst, 1829), under the CMIP 5 RCP 8.5 futureclimate change scenario by 2070, analyzed using Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). The models developedwith MaxEnt showed good predictivity, with an AUC value of 0.701. The models that inform theprecipitation of the wettest month, isothermality, and mean diurnal range variables have significantcontributions to make in shaping F. cancrivora geographical distributions. The models confirm that F.cancrivora had shifted its geographical distribution and had gained and lost habitats under a future climatechange scenario by 2070. F. cancrivora will lose 4,428 km2 of its current habitat and will gain 2,673km2 of new habitat. In total, climate change will cause F. cancrivora to lose its habitat by 1,755 km2.

Abstract

Batik production in Indonesia is increasing from year to year. However, regarding environmental quality, it is feared that it will produce waste that pollutes the surrounding water bodies. This study aims to describe problems and solutions in improving the management of batik liquid waste in the city and district of Tasikmalaya (Cipedes and Sukaraja) using descriptive qualitative methods and the Miles and Huberman model. The results of the research using interview and observation methods show that most batik SMEs in these two areas have been unable to manage waste optimally. The problem arising from batik liquid waste is the contamination of residents' fish ponds, sewers, and bathtubs. Although there are three independent and communal WWTPs (Wastewater Treatment Plants) in Cipedes (MSME Agnessa, Deden, and riverbanks) as well as one independent WWTP in UMKM Sukapura "GJM," their utilization is still constrained by various natural and artificial factors. The role of the surrounding community is still low in understanding the existence and impact of batik waste around them.
