Abstract

Abstract

The majority of Lambung Bukik Village people, Pauh Subdistrict, Padang City, make a living from farming horticultural crops, secondary crops, forest plants (Sungkai and gaharu) and raising cattle and chickens. The Sungkai Permai Farmer Group has a 2-5-year-old gaharu tree, the seeds obtained through the Elok Nagari CSR activities of PT Semen Padang. Currently, the agarwood tree has good potential through the inoculation of fungal pathogens on the agarwood tree to form economically valuable sapwood and the use of its leaves as a health drink. This activity aims to: 1). the community knows how to cultivate agarwood plants, know its benefits, and know-how to process parts of the agarwood tree, such as sapwood and leaves, into raw materials for tea drinks, 2). provide special skills for farmer groups members so that they are expected to be used as independent businesses; 3). They empower the community in utilizing empty land through the cropping pattern of aloes agroforestry with plantation crops, 4). as a form of community activity from Andalas University, especially the Faculty of Agriculture. This activity was carried out in the Sungkai Permai Farmer Group, Lambung Bukik Village, Padang City. The Sungkai Permai farmer group has acquired knowledge about gaharu cultivation and tea use through participatory methods and training in the form of demonstrations and demonstration plots by planting approximately 150 gaharu seeds as raw material for tea through an agroforestry pattern. The Sungkai Permai farmer group has acquired knowledge of using the part of gaharu to become aloe tea as a drink and health medicine from the leaves and sap of aloes. The Sungkai Permai farmer group can manage raw materials for gaharu leaves and sap derived from gaharu trees around farmers' land in Limau Manis sub-district, or other areas. They can be a productive business opportunity as tea and medicine in health drinks to improve the community's economy.

Abstract

Jorong Parit Dalam Nagari Taeh Baruah, Payakumbuh District, Limapuluh Kota Regency is one of the villages that has various problems such as drought, high number of idle lands and remote access. The main crop planted during the rainy season is lowland rice, but most of the land becomes idle land during the dry season. In terms of fertilization, farmers in this location still use artificial fertilizers (chemical fertilizers) and in terms of pest and disease control they still use chemical pesticides. The solutions that can be offered are planting chili plants which are more resistant to drought, processing agricultural waste into compost as an alternative to reduce dependence on the use of chemical fertilizers, use of Trichoderma and vegetable pesticides as agents for controlling pests and diseases, and processing chili production to increase value. selling, competitiveness and community income. The purpose of this farmer group empowerment activity is to increase public knowledge about the use of Trichoderma which can increase the growth of chili plants, and can also be used as a biological agent to control pests and diseases that often attack chili plants when cultivated. The method used in this activity is socialization and counseling, structured training and direct practice in the field of Trichoderma's influence on the growth and production of chili plants. The results obtained from this activity are that the community can recognize that there are alternative controls that are more environmentally friendly than the use of synthetic pesticides. The public can also gain new understanding regarding the increased growth and yield of chili plants by utilizing the Trichoderma biological agent. So that in the end it can reduce dependence on synthetic pesticides obtained from outside. Therefore, the environment and the balance of the ecosystem in the Nagari Taeh Baruh area are maintained. The conclusion of this activity is that plant growth applied using Trichoderma spp is higher than plants that are not treated with Trichoderma spp (control). The use of Trichoderma spp is highly recommended because besides being easy to obtain, it also provides positive values for plant growth and is good for environmental technology around cultivated plants.

Abstract

Tauruslina EA, Trizelia, Yaherwandi, Hamid H. 2017. Diversity of plant species in paddy ecosystem in West Sumatra. Biodiversitas 18: 1218-1225. Community is a group of living things which have adjusted and inhabited a natural habitat. Characteristics of the community in an environment are its diversity. The diversity of the plants is a plant species that occupy an ecosystem. The research was aimed at determining species diversity, the dominance of plant species and summed dominance ratio (SDR) in paddy ecosystem. The plant samples were taken from the location of endemic areas of brown plant hopper in Tanjung Mutiara Subdistrict, Agam District West Sumatra. Sampling was done by using two methods, (i) survey methods with direct data collection; (ii) squares method, observation of sample plots in the field. The level of diversity of plant species was analyzed using diversity index of Shannon-Wiener (H’). Plant species dominance was analyzed using dominance index (C). The results showed that index value of Shannon-Wienner ranged 1.00 – 1.73, which indicated that the category of diversity level of plants was medium. Dominance index ranged 0.03 - 0.08 which meant there were a dominant species among the plants in the study areas. The highest SDR in the ecosystem type III were Cyperus rotundus (40.87%) and Borreria laevis (37.43%), in the type I was C. rotundus (34.90%) and in type II was Portulaca oleracea (20.08%). The dominant plant species found in the type I were C. rotundus, Eleusine indica, Borreria laevis, in type II were P. oleracea, C. rotundus, Amaranthus spinosus and in type III were C. rotundus, B. laevis, and A. spinosus.

Abstract

Abstract. Trizelia, Rahma H, Syahrawati M. 2023. Diversity of endophytic fungi of rice plants in Padang City, Indonesia, entomopathogenic to brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens). Biodiversitas 24: 2384-2392. Various endophytic fungi can live in plant tissues for all or part of their life cycle without causing damage or disease in their host. Several genera of endophytic fungi have been reported to be entomopathogenic and can be used to control insect pests. This study aimed to determine the diversity of endophytic fungi from rice stems that were entomopathogenic against Nilaparvata lugens (Stål, 1854) or Brown Planthopper (BPH). Endophytic fungi were isolated from rice stems of IR42 and Cisokan varieties grown in Padang City, West Sumatra Indonesia. Isolated fungi were first evaluated for their pathogenicity against Tenebrio molitor larvae. Subsequently high pathogenicity showed isolates were tested on nymphs and adults of BPH. The results showed that the entomopathogenic fungi isolated from IR 42 and Cisokan were the members of genus Aspergillus, Trichoderma, and Beauveria. The entomopathogenic fungi from IR 42 were more diverse than Cisokan, and Beauveria sp. was the most common isolate and had a better ability to kill the BPH. The highest mortality of BPH was found in PIR 1.3 isolate, but the mortality was still relatively low (53.33% nymphs and 34.99% adults). Further study is needed to increase the effectiveness of these endophytic fungi against BPH directly or indirectly by inducing resistance.

Abstract

Abstract. Busniah M, Efendi S, Trizelia, Hermanda S. 2025. Helopeltis theivora dynamics and damage on cocoa clones under agronomic management in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 5118-5124. This study analyzed the comparative resistance of cocoa clones to Helopeltis theivora in two types of cocoa plantations in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The comparison was made between plantations intensively managed by CV Scorpio and small plantations, focusing on two main clones, ICS 60 and TSH 858. The results showed that cocoa cultivation practices in intensive and smallholder cocoa plantations affected the abundance, percentage, and intensity of damage caused by H. theivora. The population and damage levels of H. theivora were higher in smallholder cocoa plantations than in intensive plantations. The type of clone cultivated also affects the abundance and damage level of H. theivora on cocoa plants. ICS 60 clone showed resistance to H. theivora compared to TSH 858 clone. Only the resistance of these clones to H. theivora was affected by cocoa cultivation practices. The resistance of these clones decreased in cocoa plantations that were not intensively managed. Secondary branches were the location of the highest damage intensity, and H. theivora showed a preference for attacking pods measuring 7-15 cm on ICS 60 and >15 cm on TSH 858. This study clearly shows that intensive cultivation practices play an important role in controlling the population of the pest H. theivora. The choice of cocoa clones is also a determining factor. The ICS 60 clone is more resistant to H. theivora. However, genetic resistance in cocoa clones is not absolute. Synergy between the selection of appropriate clones and good cultivation practices is the key to successful control of H. theivora.

Abstract

Crocidolomia pavonana is a significant pest on cabbage that reduces the quality and quantity of cabbage. Utilizing microorganisms such as rhizobacteria is an alternative environmentally friendly control that can potentially suppress the development of this pest. The study aimed to obtain rhizobacteria isolates capable of colonizing cabbage tissue and inducing plant resistance to C. pavonana larvae. The research was conducted at the Biological Control Laboratory and Greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas, Padang. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with ten treatments and five replications. The treatment consisted of rhizobacteria isolates, including Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus subtilis, Serratia marcescens, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, as well as a negative control (aquadest sterile) and a positive control (Cypermethrin insecticide). The test was carried out by soaking the seeds in a suspension containing rhizobacteria with a population density of 10⁸ cells/ml. The variables observed were larval mortality, pupa and imago formation percentage, and increased salicylic acid production. The data were analyzed using variance and continued with the LSD further test at the 5% level. The results showed that all rhizobacteria isolates colonized into cabbage plant tissue could kill C. pavonana larvae and inhibit these insects' biological development. B. thuringiensis KJKB7.3 showed better results with the highest mortality value (62.67%). Soaking cabbage seeds with rhizobacteria can increase the content of salicylic acid. Based on this research, the rhizobacteria used in the research have the potential to be developed as biological agents to control C. pavonana.

Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith is an invasive pest of corn, requiring effective and environmentally friendly control strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three entomopathogenic fungal (EPF) isolates, namely Beauveria bassiana WS, Metarhizium anisopliae B22C, and Trichoderma asperellum A116, tested as single isolates or in combination against S. frugiperda eggs and larvae. The experiment used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with eight treatments (three single treatments, four combinations, and a control) and four replications. Conidial suspensions were applied by spraying onto eggs and second-instar larvae. Parameters observed included the percentage of unhatched eggs, larval mortality, and pupal and adult development. Chitinase, protease, and lipase activities were qualitatively tested to support the identification of pathogenicity mechanisms. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the LSD test at a 5% significance level. The results showed that EPF combinations increased mortality and inhibited the development of S. frugiperda. The combination of B. bassiana WS + T. asperellum A116 was the most effective treatment, inhibiting egg hatching by 85% and reducing pupal and adult formation to 25.95% and 12.96%, respectively. The highest mortality of first-instar larvae was observed in the single treatment of B. bassiana WS and the tertiary combination of B. bassiana WS + M. anisopliae B22C + T. asperellum A116, at 24.18% and 22.91%, respectively. Consistent enzymatic activity indicated potential biocontrol synergy through the production of cuticle-degrading enzymes. This combination is recommended for field-scale testing as an environmentally friendly alternative to reduce dependence on chemical insecticides.

Abstract

Background: Entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) such as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium spp. are widely used as biological control agents in integrated pest management (IPM), but their ecological risks to non-target predatory arthropods remain insufficiently understood; specifically, no quantitative synthesis has yet compared these effects across multiple exposure pathways and predator taxa simultaneously. Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to quantify and compare the lethal and sublethal effects of these two EPF species on predatory arthropods and to determine how exposure pathway and predator taxonomic group modulate the magnitude of ecological risk. Methods: Data were extracted from 27 laboratory studies published between 2015 and 2025, yielding 147 observations across more than 25 predator species representing six taxonomic orders (five with sufficient replication for pooled comparison). Effect sizes, expressed as log odds ratios and Hedges' g, were pooled using random-effects models, and mixed-effects moderator analyses compared EPF species, exposure pathway, and predator taxonomic order. Results: Both B. bassiana and Metarhizium spp. significantly increased predator mortality (pooled OR = 13.33) and reduced survival (OR = 7.665), with no significant difference in lethality between species. Developmental time was significantly prolonged and fecundity was significantly reduced, while longevity showed no significant overall effect, albeit based on limited data (k = 6). Exposure pathway was the strongest significant moderator of fecundity risk: direct application caused significantly greater fecundity reduction than soil or prey-mediated exposure, and Coleoptera showed the greatest susceptibility to developmental disruption among taxonomic orders based on the available data, with Coleoptera also being by far the most represented order (n = 67 observations). Conclusions: Exposure pathway, rather than EPF species identity, was the primary determinant of laboratory-observed lethal and sublethal effects on predatory arthropods, indicating that application method warrants priority attention in ecological risk assessment and in the design of EPF-based biological control strategies that seek to conserve predatory arthropods as key natural enemies, although field validation of these laboratory-based, worst-case-scenario estimates is still needed.
