Abstract

Hypertension is a global public health problem. As a chronic disease, hypertension requires long-term therapy. Patients with chronic diseases such as hypertension tend to seek other therapeutic options besides conventional therapy. One of the treatment options for chronic disease patients is Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). This study aims to determine the relationship between sociodemographic factors such as age, gender, education level, income level, and occupation with the use of CAM in hypertensive patients in Bali, especially at the Community Health Center Blabatuh II. This study used a cross-sectional design with the two-stage random sampling method. The research instrument was a questionnaire. A chi-square analysis was carried out to determine the association of each sociodemographic factor (age, gender, education level, income level, and occupation) with CAM use. Sixty (64.5%) respondents out of 93 respondents using CAM and 33 (35.5%) respondents did not use CAM for hypertension management. The sociodemographic factor that was significantly associated with CAM use was gender (); nevertheless, age, gender, educational level, and income level were not associated with CAM use in this study. Future research requires more diverse respondents as well as research on the relationship between factors other than sociodemographic such as sociocultural background, and perceptions of hypertension patients regarding the efficacy of CAM use with CAM use.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is one of the major health problems faced by various countries in the world. Due to the urgency of the antibiotic resistance problem, efforts to identify new lead compounds from new sources and analysis to determine their bioactivity are urgently needed for antibiotic development. One of the invertebrate organisms studied in relation to its potential to produce secondary metabolites that have antibacterial properties is the Gastropoda class which is included in the Mollusca phylum. Gastropoda consists of more than 80 thousand species and differs from other classes in the Mollusca phylum because of its torso body. Gastropoda has 3 sub-classes, namely: Prosobranchia, Opistobranchia, and Pulmonata. One of the land Gastropod species is snails, both those with shells (snails) and naked snails (slugs) which are included in the Pulmonata sub-class. Snail mucus is used as a traditional medicine and also as an innovative natural product to treat various health problems. Since Gastropods include a large number of species that live in various ecosystems, but research on the antibacterial potential of their secondary metabolites is still limited, this review aims to summarize research that explores the antibacterial effects of secondary metabolites in mucus produced by species in the class of Gastropods that live on land (terrestrial gastropoda) especially various species of terrestrial snails. The preparation of this review article uses a literature study method with a systematic approach. The articles used are international articles that discuss the antibacterial activity of secondary metabolites in mucus produced by snails. Articles were obtained from the PubMed database using the keywords snails AND antibacterial from the period 2000 to 2023, the period before 2000 was excluded due to the very minimal number of articles. The results obtained from the journal review that has been carried out are the presence of bioactive components such as peptides, glycopeptides, and other secondary metabolites found in the mucus of several species of land snails. These bioactive components have antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract

Inappropriate use of medicines, whether prescribed by physicians or used for self-medication, poses a risk of medication errors and threatens patient safety. One of the contributing factors is the low level of public literacy in proper drug management based on the DAGUSIBU principles (Obtain, Use, Store, and Dispose). This study aimed to determine the effect of the DAGUSIBU e-book on improving knowledge and self-medication behavior among members of the PKK in Banjar Sigaran, Desa Sedang. This research employed a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 50 respondents selected using a consecutive sampling technique. The research instruments consisted of knowledge and behavior questionnaires based on the DAGUSIBU concept and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The majority of respondents were aged 36–45 years (40%), had a secondary level of education (58%), were housewives, and had an income below the regional minimum wage (44%). The Wilcoxon test was applied because the data were ordinal and not normally distributed. The results indicated an improvement in the knowledge category from poor (62%) to moderate (62%) and a change in behavior from negative (52%) to positive (60%) after the intervention. A significant effect was found between the use of the e-book and the levels of knowledge and self-medication behavior (p-value < 0.001). In conclusion, the DAGUSIBU e-book as a digital educational medium is proven to have a significant effect in supporting the improvement of drug management literacy at the household level.
