Abstract

The integration of multicultural education in the teaching and learning process is essential for promoting equity, fostering intercultural understanding, and preparing students to navigate the complexities of our diverse and interconnected world. This is a comparative study in the context of Indonesia and Malaysia. The participant selection of this study used purposive sampling to select participants who have experienced the phenomenon of multicultural teaching. There are 10 participants from Indonesian public university and Malaysia public university involved in this study. To collect the data, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews, observation, and documents. The researchers analyzed the data using the interactive model by Miles et al. that involves several interconnected steps, i.e., data condensation, data display, and data conclusion drawing/verification. The research found that the discourse of multicultural education in the teaching and learning process is very urgent for provoking equity, diversity, and social justice, as well as enhancing students' academic achievement. In the teaching and learning process of the Indonesian public university and Malaysia public university, multicultural education was implemented by incorporating culturally relevant content, implementing inclusive pedagogical practices, and fostering collaboration with communities. By embracing cultural diversity and promoting inclusive teaching practices, teachers can create transformative learning experiences that empower students to become informed, empathetic, and socially responsible global citizens.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out the students’ difficulties in developing a paragraph and to understand the students’ difficulties in implementing the writing elements in writing their undergraduate thesis proposals. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The instrument used in this research were interviews, documentation, and Oshima & Hogue’s Paragraph Rubric. The research subject was 7 eighth-semester students of UINSI Samarinda. The data were collected from the background of the study of the student’s undergraduate thesis proposals and analyzed with the Miles and Huberman Model. The result showed that the difficulties in developing a paragraph experienced by the students were related to too specific and too general topic sentences, poor supporting sentences, the absence of concluding sentences, inconsistent topic discussion, and inharmonic sentences. At the same time, the students’ difficulties shown in implementing the writing elements were found in the organization (the failure to run the sentences smoothly), vocabulary (informal phrases, redundancy, unclear word), grammar (singular and plural error, wrong word choice errors, missing word error, article error, subject-verb agreement error, fragment error, conjunction error, wrong word form error, wrong word order error, and preposition error), and mechanics (capitalization error, punctuation error, and spelling error). The causes of these problems were the interference of students’ native language and the lack of knowledge about the rules of the development of paragraph and writing elements.

Method: Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. Result: The findings reveal that the implementation of MRAP significantly improves students' spirituality, as demonstrated by increased self-awareness, a greater sense of empathy towards others, and more active participation in religious practices. These results highlight the potential of MRAP as a model for integrating spiritual development within the educational framework. Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of incorporating spiritual aspects into educational programs to cultivate well-rounded individuals, providing valuable insights for educators in designing curricula that support both academic and spiritual growth.

The writers used Proto Malayic from Adelaar (1992) as IPD instrument, The data sources are Duano language from Sabak and Tungkal regencies spoken by 10 respondents. This is a qualitative study. The data were collected through interview, note-taking, recording, and documentation. Then, they were analyzed comparatively. This research found 920 zero data, 510 lexical differences data, 1210 cognate, and 570 phonological differences data. This showed that almost 50% of the data has zero difference, which means they have the same vocabulary. Then, phonological difference is 7.01% indicating that the two languages are different Speech. Meanwhile, lexical difference is 35.29% implying that the two are different subdialects, The relationship between the two regions is very close., the number of vocabularies that belong to vocabulary shift was higher than the vocabulary maintenance. This means that language extinction is very high, especially in the Tungkal area.

Abstract

Autonomous learning has been implemented in various disciplines. In English Language Teaching (ELT), implementing autonomous learning through multimedia oral presentation could be one of the major strategies to develop students’ language skills. This study aims to investigate the implementation of autonomous learning through a multimedia oral presentation as well as its challenges and obstacles fostering the significant development of language skills among students at an Islamic university. The study involved thirteen students majoring English Education regarded as students of the Z generation. The primary data was obtained through a video project-based multimedia oral presentation, a semi-structured interview with open-ended questions. The observation of the videos with note taking and comments on YouTube were used as secondary data. Through a descriptive qualitative approach, a content analysis technique was used to investigate to what extent the implementation of autonomous learning through a multimedia oral presentation develops students’ language skills. The study found that the students’ performances ranged from competent to somewhat competent in their vocabulary and content coverage; and competent to minimally competent in their grammatical accuracy, pronunciation, comprehensibility, and presentation skills. Implementing the students’ autonomous learning did not significantly develop their language skills due to students' lack of language proficiency, the absence of feedback,  technical challenges, time constraints, and motivation. This suggests that the implementation of students’ autonomous learning     with guidance is necessary to raise students’ language proficiency and minimize the obstacles and challenges, and various technological tools with technical and practical strategies should be familiarized with the students.
