Abstract

World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund havestated in year 2012 that one of their global agenda is to fulfill the needs of inclusive Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) to increase the participation and development of young children with disabilities. One of important things for the agenda are understanding various special needs of young children with various kind of mental disability, such as mental retardation or nowadays known as intellectual disability. This research aims to narratively describe the prosocial behaviors of a young child with intellectual disability in special school of Pembina Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. This research used qualitative approach with child observation and interview to the parents as the main technique to gather data. This research shows that prosocial behaviors in young children with intellectual disability are divided into four aspects, those are: a) the ability to join groups, b) supportive acts, c) empathy and caring, and d) self-adjustment. These behaviors were shown in the child’s dailyactivities, her habits, affected by the culture and daily activities of her parents and siblings, and also by the interaction with her friends and family. This research could give important information about the importance of managing the social interaction in inclusive ECCD by putting emphasis in four aspects described above, and also the role of parents and ECCD tutors in facilitating activities that could help stimulate specific needs of social skills in young children with intellectual disability.

Abstract

Young children with disabilities are a group that is prone to stigma anddiscrimination. Therefore, World Health Organization and United Nations Children’sFund declared a global agenda in 2012 to address the needs of inclusive ECCD to improve the participation and development of young children with disabilities. In respond to that agenda, it is crucial to understand the particular needs of young children with emotional disorder such as their communication ability, before they can be included into inclusive ECCD service. This research aims to describe the communication skills of young child with emotional disorder in Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur. The participant in this study showed insignificant performance in verbal communication skills like linguistic content, structures and the use of language. Meanwhile in non verbal communication skills such as face expression, body gesture and hand gesture, the child showed considerable performance. The research method used qualitative method, which is direct observation to the child and interview to thesubject’s parents. Parents and ECCD tutors should consider to set a communication- stimulating relationship in house and ECCD post to support the verbal skills development. The result of this study can give impact in the development of inclusive ECCD science in East Nusa Tenggara, also to aid future research in inventing best practice models in the field.

Abstract

The root of empathy has been planted in person since he/she was a baby. Then one of the way to despite foundation of moral education and built children empathy has to be done since early life. Empathy is an ability to understand others’ feeling and capability to put self on others condition. This research used Action Research Method and aims to know children’s empathy after they performs a folklore story by using puppet in front of their friends. This research engaged 5 students aged 5 years old in Lentera Alam Learning Center. There were four steps, 1) Planning; 2) Action; 3) Observation; and 4) Reflection which were done in two cycles. The treatment was teacher told a folklore story to children, then ask children to retell the story for his/her friend by using puppets in front of the class. Check list observation was used during the performance on the first and second cycle. It was found an improvement on children’s empathy, before the treatment pre-test score is 11.2 then post-test on the first cycle 16.8 and the second cycle 22.4. Children’s empathy shown by the ability to distinguished emotions, sharing, helping, asking apologize, giving forgiveness and cheering others friend when they were sad.

Abstract

Father’s involvement in parenting and early childhood education and development (ECED) is a form of active participation in supporting child’s development. Father does not often actively participated in parenting particularly in the community having patrilinial system. The study, conducted from October 2015 to March 2016 in Kupang, aimes at identifying father’s involvement in parenting and ECE. Research design used was qualitative with interview as data collection method. Four heads of urban community participated in this reseatch. Thematic analysis was conducted.The result of the study indicates that fathers in Kupang city have involved themselves in parenting and ECED, but the involvement are limited to economic needs fulfillment while attention and emotional needs are less fulfilled. The study suggests to improve father’s involvement through socializations, seminars or discussions.

Abstract

The elderly as a vulnerable group of people in the community has various physical, psychological and social adversities in their life. In this age, someone who is of old age should have a positive attribute that could help the person to achieve a life with quality. Dispositional optimism is an individual’s positive attribute that could give a positive impact to elderly people. This paper reviewed theories related to dispositional optimism by reviewing existing literature. Indicators and measurement of dispositional optimism also discussed in this paper. Dispositional optimism theory was reviewed from the perspective of the initial founder of the theory and then further looked at its development in global application. Indicators of dispositional optimism were discussed to further understand the process of measurement of the concept itself. The measurement of dispositional optimism was often referred to as the Life Orientation Test scale, which was developed into various kinds of similar tests in order to use the test in other settings. The discussion in this paper hopefully could provide knowledge regarding dispositional optimism in elderly people especially future research in an Indonesian setting.

Abstract

Children are a group of individuals belong in an age group that is vulnerable to various kind of negative behaviours. Neglection, abuse, and also violence are some of the negatives that often happens to children. Children’s perception of violence influences their reaction to violence itself. This paper discusses the concept of perception and also its concepts and then relate it in children’s context. Development aspects and a variety of violence were discussed in this paper. Concepts of perception were reviewed in detail by considering development tasks and also development aspects of children. Violence was looked from the global perspective by considering the type of violence that often happens to children. Factors that cause violence were carefully reviewed to help in forming an effective intervention. A good intervention should consider deeply the complexity of the violence phenomenon in children. Activists and academia who are working in this field could consider more of children’s perception to violence conceptsin doing related works.

Abstract

Older people are a group of people that are struggling in the last phase of their life. In this phase, a person faces various challenges to fulfill their needs to get a life with quality. High level of quality of life is something that is subjective, mostly different in each person. This paperis a literature review that will discuss factors related to quality of life by reviewing existing relevant literatures. Indicators and measurement tools will also be discussed in this paper. Quality of life factors that bceome the main reference in the global context are the one stated byWorld Health Organization. These factors would also influence scales that measure quality of life, which in turn were further developed to fit specific cultural context to fulfill the needs of each unique population. Indicators of quality of life were concluded as influenced by varioussituations in a person’s life including environment, culture and beliefs. The content hopefully will be able to provide knowledge concerning quality of life in relations with elderly. Understanding the concept of quality of life would help to advance the literature including in it well-being and other related concepts.

Abstract

International Non Governmental Organization (INGO) works to support community in needs either in urban or rural setting. One of the main target group is the most vulnerable group in a community. This group were often left out and not involved in community empowerment projects implemented. This article aims to describe the condition of a vulnerable group located at Ongulero village, Sigi district, Central Sulawesi Province, and to recommend an intervention that could be applied by stakeholders in that village. Situation description were done in a narrative form, strengthen by observation and interview data that was analysed in psychological context. Result of the analysis shows that this vulnerable group was yet to be reached by community empowerment program that was being applied by an INGO there. Children are part of a vulnerable group that is when empowered and facilitated, could become a solution for community empowerment. A potential intervention is discussed further in this article to help improve child participation in Ongulero village.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship between psychological and demographic factors, which are dispositional optimism, and self-efficacy are the psychological factors, meanwhile home, sex and ethnicity as the demographic factors of quality of life in the older adults. The major hypothesis of this research proposed that there are positive relationship from both psychological factors and demographic factors to the quality of life in older adults. This study involved 53 older adult peoples. The result of multiple regression analysis shows that there is a positive relationship from all five variables to the quality of life in older adults as big as 76,5% (Adjusted R2= 0,765). This result means that both the psychological and demographic factors do have effective contributions to the quality of life in older adult people. The results of t-tests are also discussed.

Abstract

Father have important role in young child’s development. Active and regular involvement from father could give positive impacts to child development. In order to understand general description of father’s involvement in Early Childhood Education and Development (ECED) in Kota Kupang, the authors used teacher’s perception as primary data source in this study. The objective of the study is to identify teacher’s perception on fathers’ involvement in ECED in Kupang City. Method used was qualitative with interviews as main data gathering technique. The results showed that father’s involvement in ECED were still limited, proved by statements showing that mother has more active role in ECED compared to father. This is due to the lack of awareness and knowledge of father and other related stakeholders about the importance of father’s involvement in development of their young children. Therefore there are some intervention that need to be applied by teachers in order to improve father’s involvement in ECED that is to give counselling, home visit program, connecting book and also parenting program for fathers.
