Abstract

Music video as a discourse demands the expression of meaning-making encoded which can be apprehended from many aspects of analysis including visual pattern and language used. This research takes a music video from Little Mix ft. Saweetie for their song Confetti which represents gender stereotypes issue of three genders: male, female, and queer. This study aims to, 1) reveal the representational meaning in visual pattern  constructed in Confetti music video based on gender categorized (male, female, and queer) and 2) investigate the language used based on gender categorized (male, female, and queer) on the skit of Confetti music video revealed by using interpersonal metafunction. The writer used descriptive-qualitative method based on representational meaning in semiotic approach theory by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) and the interpersonal metafunction in SFL theory by Matthiessen and Halliday (2004). The results showed gender stereotypes of male, female, and queer in narrative process (including actional and reactional processes, and locative circumstances) and conceptual processes (including classificational process, analytical processes, and symbolic processes). In language used related to interpersonal metafunction, the dominant mood functions used by male and female is declarative mood, while queer are indicated with mostly no mood functions founded in exclamatory sentences form.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the use of language style in Indonesian stand-up comedy show. The researcher used Martin Joss’s theory in 1967 about five styles of language in form of formality; frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style and intimate style. This study analysis what are the types and the most frequent style that are used in the Indonesian stand-up comedy shows. The form of research used is qualitative descriptive approach. The data in this research obtained from the five videos of Ridwan Remin stand-up comedy in YouTube. The result showed that there were three styles used in those videos. They were frozen style, formal style and intimate style. After the researcher counted the data, the most frequent style was the casual style with 93.96% of whole utterances. It is concluded that the use of casual style was the characteristics of Ridwan Remin in delivering humor material.

Abstract

This research aimed to find the form of slang words and the type of word formation process found in Rich Brian's Album 1999. This type of research was descriptive research. The data of this research was words and phrases of song lyrics in album 1999. For the data collection, the researcher found all the lyrics form the largest collection of song lyrics and music on https://www.genius.com. There were three instruments for this research: the researcher itself, laptop, and table indicators. There were five steps for the data analysis: categorizing the form of slang and type of word formation process, analysed the slang word use the theory, tabulated the data on the table, calculated the percentage, and concluding the research finding. The theory used in this research was the theory of Coleman (2012) and Yule (2010). The result showed from 9 forms of slang words, the researcher found 3 forms of slang words. The 3 types of form of slang words are change in meaning (21,05%), change in function (26,31%), and abbreviation (52,64%). The result showed about the type of word formation process, the researcher found 5 types of word formation process, namely blending (14,03%), clipping (70,18%), derivation (5,27%), and acronym (3,50%). The most dominant form of slang words is abbreviation and the most dominant type of word formation process is clipping. Based on the findings, the relationship between slang and song lyrics is to make the song lyrics more interesting and easier to express ideas.Key words: Morphology, Word formation process, Slang word, Form of slang, Rich Brian’s Song

Abstract

Speech act is the best way to the speaker delivered a massage that the hearer can understand. In this research the researcher tried to analyze type of speech act and classification of illocutioanary act used in the main character in Pacific Rim Movie. This research uses descriptive qualitative research to examine. The researcher analyzed three parts: all the utterances of the main character, types of speech act, and classification of illocutionary act. The researcher found all the utterances that conducted the types of speech act and the classification of illocutionary act. The study determines the type of speech act and the classification of illocutionary act that are employed in the Pacific Rim movie. As a result, the researcher found 45 representative, 67 directive, 5 commissive, 14 expressive, 0 declarative for classification of illocutionary act, and the most dominant classification of illocutionary act is directive with 67 utterances. In conclusion, the main character utterances contains directive serve as a individuals to express their desires on intentions, typically involving requesting someone to do something, forbidding certain actions, ordering, asking for assistence or information, commanding actions to be taken, suggesting possible courses of action, or advising on a particular course of action.

Abstract

This study concerns with women’s language used in the movie Encanto. The aims of the study were to find out the use of women’s language features and language functions of women’s language used by female characters in the movie Encanto. The utterances of female characters were analyzed by using Lakoff’s women’s language theory and Jakobson’s language function theory. Qualitative method used in this study to analyzing the data and describe the findings. There were 65 utterances from eight features of women’s language features that occurred in the movie Encanto. They were 15 lexical hedges or fillers, 14 intensifiers, 6 rising intonations, 3 ‘empty’ adjectives, 12 emphatic stress, 8 tag questions, 5 ‘superpolite’ forms, and 2 avoidance of strong swear words. Lexical hedges or fillers came out as the most dominant feature of women’s language features used in the movie Encanto. Then, the kinds of language function used by female characters in the movie Encanto were expressive function, directive function, referential function, metalinguistic function, and phatic function. The most dominant language function used by female characters in the movie Encanto was expressive function.

Abstract

Slang Word is almost used in every conversation among young people and extends through many media and it was created and is now used largely by young people and teenagers. This is due to the fact that people react to new trends and terms more quickly and more frequently than before. Slang words can be found in movies, because slang words are informal words that, from year to year experience new slang vocabulary increases. This research is An Analysis of The Word Formation Process of English Slang in The Venom Film Script: Let There Be Carnage (2021). The purpose of this study was to find out how many Slang Words and the characteristic groupings of Slang Words found in the film script Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and the Word Formation Process experienced by Slang Word. This study uses the theory of Yule (1985) and Allan and Burridge (2006). The data instrument used in this research is in the form of data collection and making a table of indicators to clarify the theory applied to this research. The method used is descriptive research by collecting and explaining the meaning of the Slang Words found. The data found are the Slang Word Characteristics there are Fresh and Creative, Flippant, Imitative, and Acronym. The Slang Word data found underwent a word formation process, there are Compounding, Borrowing, Coinage, Blending, Conversion, and Derivation. The results of this study found 44 words that belong to the characteristics of Slang Word, with the most dominant Fresh and Creative, namely 20 words (45.45%) and the least data, namely, Acronym 1 word (2.27%). From the Slang Word data it was found that only 25 words underwent a Word Formation Process with dominant compounding of 15 words (60%) and data of at least 1 word Derivation (4%).

Abstract

This research investigates a speech act and felicity condition from the minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. In this research, the researcher analyzed speech act categories and felicity conditions in a statement. This research used descriptive qualitative research to analyze. The instrument of this research was the researcher himself. Transcripts and note-taking were also used to collect the data. The researcher analyzed three parts: the list and collection of all the statements, categories, types of speech acts, and felicity conditions. Lastly, conducted all types of speech acts and felicity condition types were found in the statement. As a result, the researcher found 70 assertive, 44 directive, 47 commissive, 12 expressive, and five declarative for illocutionary acts. Then, perlocutionary acts are 86 persuading, 80 convincing, and 12 scaring. And for the felicity condition shows 41 propositional content conditions, 61 preparatory conditions, 47 sincerity conditions, and 29 essential conditions. In conclusion, the minister's statement contains assertive and persuasive speech acts, so the condition of felicity is a condition of preparation. In addition, ministerial statements have followed the rules of Indonesia's free and active foreign policy.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify types and purposes of sarcasm used in Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube videos. Ryan Reynolds is famous actor who starred in various movies including Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Free Guy and Red Notice. This study uses the theory proposed by Camp (2011) and Kreuz (1991) regarding types and purposes of sarcasm respectively. This study uses descriptive method to analyse the utterances, as the source of the data. The data for this research were 37 sarcastic utterances taken from 15 videos from Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube channel. Three out of four types of sarcasm found after analyzing the data using Camp’s theory. They were propositional sarcasm (23 occurrences), illocutionary sarcasm (13 occurrences) and ‘like’-prefixed sarcasm (1 occurrence) with zero occurrence of lexical sarcasm. The second finding showed that all purposes of sarcasm occurs throughout the 37 data obtained. They were ‘to mock’ (15 occurrences), ‘to insult’ (13 occurrences), ‘to be funny’ (6 occurrences), ‘to criticize’ (2 occurrences) and ‘to show anger' (1 occurrence). It can be concluded that the most prominent type of sarcasm used in Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube videos is propositional sarcasm with 23 occurences and the most prominent used purpose of sarcasm is to mock with 15 occurrences.

Abstract

This research investigated the types and levels of code mixing based on Deddy's podcast video on his YouTube channel. The aim of this research is to determine the types and the levels of code mixing in Deddy Corbuzier’s podcast. Qualitative the video, transcribing the video’s audio, identifying the code-mixing and level code- mixing, and re-checking. After the process, the result indicated that the most code-mixing used in the utterances of the guest star in Deedy's Corbuzier podcast video is intra-sentential with the total number is 108 method used in this study to analyze the data and describe the findings. There were 3 Podcast videos of Deddy Corbuzier anakyzed in this study: Agnez Mo.. Mantanku Ter…, Papa Meninggal, Azka Ikut Papa.. I Love You More Than You Know, 500 Juta Tuk Luna Maya.. Tapi.. Ada Tapinya..!!. Some methods followed to collect the data include searching the video, selecting and downloading the video, watching occurances, meanwhile followed by intra-lexical type is 7 occurances. Furthermore, the level of code mixing that mostly appears is clause type 50 occurances then followed by word level 36 occurances, phrase level 31 occurances, baster level 7 occurances, and idiom 1 occurances.

Abstract

Figurative language is a way of uttering or writing words by setting aside their literal form and replacing them with other words that describe the intended meaning. In this research, the researcher aimed to analyze the types of figurative language and cultural ambiguities used in Genshin Impact, Ghost of Tsushima, Arena of Valor, and Honor of Kings. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to collect the data. The researcher analyzed the utterances containing figurative language and examined any instances of cultural ambiguity. The researcher identified all the utterances that demonstrated types of figurative language and cultural ambiguity. The study determined the types of figurative language and cultural ambiguity employed in those video games. As a result, the researcher found 36 data of types of figurative language. There are 19 data of personification utterances, 5 data of metaphor occurrences, 3 data of simile sentences, 3 examples of hyperbole, 3 sentences containing paradox, 1 data of synecdoche utterance, 1 example of understatement, and 1 instance of antithesis. Additionally, the researcher found 21 data of types of cultural ambiguity. There are 11 instances of semantic ambiguity, 7 data of referential ambiguity sentences, and 3 data of pragmatic ambiguity utterances. Genshin Impact and Ghost of Tsushima were categorized as adventure games, while Arena of Valor and Honor of Kings were classified as MOBA video games. The study found that adventure video games used hyperbole, synecdoche, and understatement. Meanwhile, MOBA video games preferred personification, metaphor, simile, paradox, and antithesis.
