Abstract

Numeracy literacy is a vital 21st-century competency, yet Indonesian high school students often underperform, especially in data interpretation and contextual reasoning. Individual differences, such as cognitive styles, may influence students’ approaches to numeracy tasks. This study explores how Wholist–Analytic cognitive styles relate to students’ numeracy literacy and examines the implications for differentiated instruction. This qualitative phenomenological study involved 12 tenth-grade students purposively selected from two public high schools representing different achievement categories. Students were categorized into Wholist or Analytic cognitive styles using the Matching Figure Test and Embedded Figure Test. Each group included students with high, medium, and low numeracy abilities. Data were collected through cognitive style assessments, numeracy literacy tests, interviews, and observations. Analysis was conducted using triangulation and NVivo 12 Plus software. Wholist students demonstrated strengths in understanding global contexts but often overlooked numerical precision, especially among lower-achieving students. In contrast, Analytic students applied systematic problem-solving strategies but struggled to connect results with contextual meaning. High-achieving students in both groups successfully integrated their cognitive tendencies with strong numeracy skills, while lower-achieving students exhibited consistent challenges regardless of style. The findings suggest that cognitive style alone does not determine numeracy success; rather, its interaction with skill level is critical. Differentiated learning strategies—such as problem-based learning, visual scaffolding, and technology integration—can address these differences. Educators should tailor instruction to students’ cognitive profiles to enhance numeracy outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the worked-example strategy on students’ learning outcomes in complex mathematics across three time points (pre-test, post-test, delayed-test), and to analyze whether this effect differed based on students’ gender and initial ability levels. A quantitative one-group within-subjects quasi-experimental design was used with 31 eighth-grade students from SMPN 1 Pulosari. Data were collected through validated and reliable test instruments and analyzed using Rasch modeling and inferential statistics. Results showed that the strategy significantly improved learning outcomes (p<0.05), particularly from pre-test to post-test. Although delayed-test scores slightly declined, performance remained high. Moreover, initial differences based on ability levels were observed in the pre-test but they were no longer significant (p>0.05) in the post-test and delayed-test results, suggesting that the strategy helped lower-ability students catch up, reducing learning gaps. Additionally, the study found no significant differences in learning outcomes based on gender (p > 0.05), nor any interaction between gender or ability level and the effectiveness of the worked-example strategy (p>0.05). This study demonstrates the worked example strategy’s effectiveness across time, abilities, and genders in reducing cognitive load and strengthening students’ conceptual understanding. Future studies may compare types, involve varied levels, and use more rigorous designs.

Abstract

The integration of computational thinking (CT) has become increasingly essential in mathematics education, particularly in topics that require spatial reasoning and structured problem solving, such as flat-surfaced solid geometry. This study aims to synthesize empirical evidence on students’ computational thinking abilities within this specific mathematical context through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this review analyzed seven peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025 in nationally accredited journals indexed at SINTA levels 1–5. The literature search was conducted using Google Scholar and Publish or Perish, guided by predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the study selection process followed PRISMA guidelines. The findings reveal that students’ computational thinking abilities are generally at low to moderate levels and unevenly developed across indicators, with abstraction and decomposition more prominent than pattern recognition and algorithmic thinking. Instructional designs incorporating visualization, contextualization, and structured problem engagement effectively supported CT development, whereas unplugged and manipulative-based activities proved beneficial at the elementary level. However, most studies emphasize outcome-based assessments and provide limited insight into students’ cognitive processes during problem solving. These findings highlight the need for theoretically grounded instructional designs and process-oriented assessment frameworks to support a more integrated and sustainable development of computational thinking in geometry learning.
