The techniques of data analysis were done by watching, writing some notes, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The result shows that lilting contains some cultural knowledge especially the difference of western and Asian way of life, language used by England and China, cultural biases (ethnocentric, stereotype, discrimination and prejudice), people’s perception about homosexual, the way people look at kissing in public place, the way to offer food, the way people speak up in direct conversation, the process of assimilation and acculturation to a new culture, the function of a professional translator, and the most important lesson of how difficult to communicate when we do not have little bit knowledge and information of other language and culture.

This case results the students seem to be indifferent to this important lesson. Demotivation is discussed due to its negative orientation and it has direct educational implications. Thus, it seems necessary to investigate and explore demotivational factors in learning English of non-English major students in order to improve the quality of education in Indonesia. A total of 51 students responded to the questionnaire which analyzing 30 items of six demotivational constructs use Guttman scale format and 6 students of the third semester in academic year 2018/ 2019 who got the lowest scores in the last semester represented in-depth interviews to dig deeper their perception about demotivational factors they perceived during learning English at college. The results show that lecturers' inappropriate teaching method, inadequate facilities, grammatically teaching material, lack of students' self-confidence, low score, little chance to practice and lack of students' awareness were the most demotivating factors for non-English major students. This information then can be used as a basic goal setting, method, strategy, and relevant learning materials with the needs of graduates. However, the lecturer is the most important key who can restore students' motivation in English language learning.

Abstract

Writing skill is very crucial in learning the language. However, it is the most challenging skill for learners because of the complexity of various nuances. Learners find it is hard to produce well-written essays, primarily narrative paragraphs. Therefore, this study aimed to discover the efficacy of using chain pictures in writing narrative paragraphs to Indonesian EFL students. This study population was the second year students of Senior High School 4 Bulukumba, South-Sulawesi, Indonesia. Thirty students were selected as the sample. The data were collected through the pre-experimental method by using pre and post-test design. The result showed that the students' writing skills were significantly improved after training them by using chain pictures. The analysis result shows that students' mean score in the pre-test was 56,87, categorized as poor writing skills. In contrast, the students' mean score in the post-test was 74,13, classified as good writing skill of narrative paragraph. The t-test value was also higher than the t-table value, which was 8,25 > 2.045. Thus, it is recommended to use chain pictures in the English learning environment, especially in teaching EFL students to write narrative paragraphs.

Abstract

Writing is the most complex and challenging subject. These are believed to occur because they have trouble rephrasing statements and placing suitable words, especially in writing recount text. As known, recount text has the social function of retelling events for information or entertainment. This study tried approaching the EFL students to explore deeply about their distressing experience writing a recount text. This study applied a qualitative case study approach. Six students participated in this study. The participants were selected in two stages purposely with several considerations. In the data collection, the researchers used semi-structured to elaborate data based on students’ responses. The interview questions were developed or adapted from Norrish and Richard’s opinions about the causes of writing errors. The researchers used data analysis by employing a descriptive qualitative analytic technique from describing, illustrating, and evaluating. The study found two primary reasons students make grammatical errors in their recount writing. The first cause was transferring pupils' English grammar and language structure knowledge into Indonesian. Because of this, they could not finish their papers with the correct sentence structure. In addition, the impact of the first language is due to the influence of the Indonesian system. However, intra-language also caused contributed to grammatical errors in terms of an overgeneralization, insufficient application of the rule, and ignorance of rule restriction. In other words, intra-languages and inter-language information were the primary cause of the grammatical errors. For this reason, it suggested that all teachers do corrections about grammatical errors made by students that need more practice and an explanation, as well as comments regarding whether students successfully learned English writing material.

Abstract

Blended learning has emerged as one of the most popular and cutting-edge learning strategies implemented in the Post Covid -19. However, little research has been conducted to investigate teachers’ conceptions of implementing blended learning in the Indonesian context and the impact of Master of Elementary Education (MEE) Universitas Terbuka (UT) Indonesia on teachers’ competencies. This research investigates the advantage of teachers’ involvement as students in MEE UT. This research also intends to discover student-teacher challenges in utilizing blended learning as an emerging learning method of Post Covid-19. This research employed a convergent parallel design of Mixed Method Research (MMR) by inviting 20 student-teachers to participate in the questionnaire and 4 student-teachers in the semi-structured interviews. The participants were from MEE UT. The study findings found that despite some challenges that the teachers faced in the early stages of Covid -19, the teachers also viewed Covid -19 as a blessing in disguise, where the participants learned a lot about how to conduct learning in a fully online mode. The research findings also noted that the participants’ involvement in MEE UT has the teachers enhance their competencies, including Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK). Another worth finding is that blended learning has been viewed as a teaching strategy that meets the demand of instructional fits post Covid -19. This study includes evidence, implications of the results, and suggested directions for future instruction-related research.
