Abstract

English is essential for national development involving the tourism sector. Unfortunately, it just serves as a foreign language in Indonesia, resulting in low speaking performance. This study observed stakeholders' and community's efforts to boost English-speaking fluency in the tourism object zone. It was a qualitative case study through interviews, document analysis, and photos in collecting the data. The research was done in Tana Toraja and Bulukumba regency of South Sulawesi province by involving stakeholders. The findings show that Stakeholders and local society are regularly active in training on the use of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), such as English for tour guides, hotel services, selling handicrafts, etc. Stakeholders also introduce and train the use of various kinds of Artificial Intelligence to improve English skills, such as "Google translation". The government localized a village which was named "Tourism English Village," where the local people try to speak English as much as possible. This study contributes to the second language acquisition acceleration in foreign language countries and promotes some tourism object zones in Indonesia..

Abstract

Becoming a part of an English village as a form of immersion program differs significantly from studying English in a classroom setting where students can directly practice speaking in real-life situations. This study looks at how Indonesian students perceive the benefits of intense classes in an English Immersion Program on their cognitive development both during and after the program. The biggest Indonesian English Village, Kampung Inggris Pare, was the location. This qualitative case study involving participant observation, interviews, and photos included 14 participants. An interactive analytic model was then used to gather, reduce, present, and make conclusions from the data. According to the study, most participants improved after taking intense English classes in Kampung Inggris Pare, especially in the cognitive areas. Vocabulary was the area where they felt most Heavily Upgraded (HUg), followed by fluency and pronunciation. This study suggests that an immersion program like English Village is one way to address several issues with English learning in schools. An English Immersion Program's intense sessions might be advantageous for students.

Abstract

KKN membuka peluang untuk membangun kemitraan dan sinergi antara perguruan tinggi dan masyarakat dalam mewujudkan pembangunan yang berkelanjutan. Salah satu bentuk kegiatan Pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PkM) KKN yang dilakukan adalah festival lomba anak-anak Edukatif, keagamaan, dan entertainment berupa lomba ceramah, adzan, lari kelereng, dan joget balon. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk mengembangkan kreativitas dan potensi anak, meningkatkan rasa percaya diri, menumbuhkan semangat sportivitas, melestarikan budaya, dan meningkatkan kedekatan antar anak dan masyarakat. Pelaksana kegiatan PkM ini adalah mahasiswa Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) Universitas Muhammadiyah Bulukumba (UMB) Kegiatan ini dilakukan dalam rangka memenuhi program kerja oleh kelompok 11 KKN Angkatan II UMB. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 21 Januari 2024. Metode pelaksanaan festival ini terbagi menjadi tiga tahap yaitu pembekalan, pelatihan, dan Pratik. Sebanyak 27 siswa dari kelas 4 – 6 SD Negeri 32 Bungloe memeriahkan Festival Lomba Anak yang diselenggarakan di Kantor Desa Bonto Tallasa, Kabupaten Bantaeng, Sulawesi Selatan. Di antara 27 siswa tersebut, 5 siswa mengikuti lomba ceramah, 6 siswa mengikuti lomba adzan, 8 siswa mengikuti lomba lari kelereng, dan 8 siswa mengikuti lomba joget balon. Kegiatan festival lomba anak-anak ini dilaksankan secara lancar, penuh keantusiasan dan keseruan dari anak-anak. Kegiatan festival lomba anak-anak ini memperoleh hasil yang memuaskan terbukti dari keantusiasan dan keseruan dari anak-anak.

Abstract

The aim of this community service is to increase knowledge and measure children's abilities in understanding Islamic teachings through literacy. The implementation of PkM is located in the Kamilah housing complex, inhabited by around 200 people, to be precise, the location is in Bojong Sari District, Depok City. This PkM activity is in the form of a competition which is attended by 50 children aged 5 to 10 years. The implementation method consists of 3 steps, the first is the preparation stage by collecting data on the number of participants and making an activity schedule. The second stage is the implementation where participants take part in the competition according to those selected based on previous filling in for willingness. Next, assess the work results of the participants based on the assessment criteria agreed upon by the committee team. The results obtained in this community service are that children are able to know the procedures and rules in Islamic religious teachings such as those related to adab, tajwid and lafaz and fhasahah. Abstract

This research aims to analyze students' abilities in writing texts at MTs NU Trate Gresik. The research design is qualitative descriptive research. Data was obtained from thirty(Husna, 2018)class VIII students of MTs NU Trate Gresik randomly. This research data was collected using three types of instruments. Namely with written tests, interviews and documentation. This observation aims to determine the condition of the class during learning. The interview aims to obtain data regarding factors that influence student interest. And documentation is a supporting instrument in data collection. The research results are presented in a qualitative descriptive manner. based on the analysis, the mean score of students' descriptive writing ability was 15.3, indicating good ability. Their average scores in the content category were 3.2 (good), organization 3 (fair), vocabulary 2.8 (poor), grammar 3.2 (good), and mechanics 3.1 (fair). The test results show that students find it difficult to write descriptive texts, especially with grammar rules such as simple present tense and providing detailed descriptions. Many students struggled to form complete sentences, spell correctly, and had limited vocabulary which led to the use of repetitive words in their writing.

Abstract

Building arguments for academic writing, such as constructing justification for a research proposal, is regarded a complex task. Moreover, it is believed that male and female authors use and produce the language differently, including perhaps providing thesis and arguments for research. Extensive research on rhetorical analysis of students’ theses has been widely conducted; however, little we know the way they state their claims from gender perspectives. To fill the void, this study aims to explore how Indonesian male and female authors construct and state their arguments in Introduction section for justifying their research from the perspectives of argumentation ability, underpinned by the concepts of transitivity system of SFL approach. Informed by qualitative descriptive research paradigm particularly text analysis, ten Introduction sections from selected English thesis proposals written by male and female authors at a university in Banten Province, Indonesia were subject to analyze. The finding of the research shows that either male students or female students expressed their arguments of their research topic and justification in almost similar fashion. The most frequent processes over the clauses were material process, relational process (attributive and identifying), and mental process (male: 59%, 20%, 11%; female: 49%, 20%, 14%). These findings underscore the common strategies employed by students, regardless of gender, in establishing their research objectives and setting the stage for their academic work. Such insights can be of significance for educators and researchers aiming to guide students in optimizing their academic writing skills, particularly in crafting compelling Introduction sections for thesis proposals.

Abstract

This study describes the members’ motivation and learning process in WhatsApp Group-based English School (WG-ES) as a unique platform to organize self-productivity during COVID-19. This study used the qualitative method. Fifty-one members participated. The instruments used were Google forms, observations, and documents. The data were analyzed using adopted six approaches by Cresswell. The results indicated that the participants joined WG-ES based on their desires and awareness. Their motivations for joining WG-ES were divided into English-based and non-English-based motivations. Most participants were motivated to improve their English skills, specifically communication skills. The other motivations were the expectation to expand networking, get experience, and find an opportunity to study abroad. In WG-ES, the learning programs were divided into two main activities, daily chitchat and focused learning. WG-ES had rules, study schedules, and flexible curriculums. Therefore, the participants seemed more comfortable studying English through WG-ES. Abstrak: Penelitian ini menggambarkan motivasi dan proses belajar anggota di Sekolah Bahasa Inggris berbasis Grup WhatsApp sebagai platform yang produktif selama COVID-19. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Lima puluh satu anggota berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah Google-form, observasi, dan dokumen. Data dianalisis menggunakan enam pendekatan yang diadopsi oleh Cresswell. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peserta mengikuti Grup WhatsApp berdasarkan keinginan dan kesadaran mereka. Motivasi untuk bergabung Grup WhatsApp terbagi menjadi motivasi berbasis bahasa Inggris dan non-bahasa Inggris. Sebagian besar peserta termotivasi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris, khususnya keterampilan komunikasi. Motivasi lainnya adalah harapan untuk memperluas jaringan, mendapatkan pengalaman, dan menemukan kesempatan untuk belajar di luar negeri. Dalam Grup WhatsApp ini, program pembelajaran dibagi menjadi dua kegiatan utama, yaitu obrolan harian dan pembelajaran terfokus. Sekolah Bahasa Inggris berbasis Grup WhatsApp ini memiliki aturan, jadwal belajar, dan kurikulum yang fleksibel. Oleh karena itu, para peserta lebih nyaman belajar bahasa Inggris melalui Sekolah Bahasa Inggris berbasis Grup WhatsApp.

Abstract

This paper investigated the immersive environment's contributing factors in developing learners' metacognitive learning strategies in an Indonesian English village. This study applied qualitative design through an ethnographic approach involving 14 participants from six English-speaking courses in “Kampung Inggris Pare,” Indonesia. Data were collected from observation, interviews, and photographs, then analyzed in six stages: preparing raw data, organizing data for analysis, reading all the data, coding data, communicating the theme/description, and interpreting the meaning. The results indicated that the English village accommodates establishing the Authentic Immersion Environment, English Camps, and exciting classroom activities. The elements assisted the learners in centering, planning, arranging, monitoring, and evaluating their learning while studying and staying for some months in this environment. This study promotes three elements of an English village-based immersion environment and presents how their role commits to developing learners' metacognitive learning strategies in learning English. Abstrak: Makalah ini menyelidiki faktor-faktor pendukung lingkungan imersif dalam mengembangkan strategi pembelajaran metakognitif siswa di kampung bahasa Inggris Indonesia. Penelitian ini menerapkan desain kualitatif melalui pendekatan etnografi yang melibatkan 14 responden dari enam kursus berbahasa Inggris di “Kampung Inggris Pare,” Indonesia. Data dikumpulkan dari observasi, wawancara, dan foto, kemudian dianalisis dalam enam tahap: menyiapkan data mentah, mengorganisir data untuk analisis, membaca semua data, mengkodekan data, mengkomunikasikan tema/deskripsi, dan menafsirkan makna. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kampung Inggris mengakomodasi pembentukan Authentic Immersion Environment, English Camps, dan kegiatan kelas yang menyenangkan. Unsur-unsur tersebut membantu siswa dalam memusatkan, merencanakan, mengatur, memantau, dan mengevaluasi pembelajaran mereka selama belajar dan tinggal beberapa bulan di lingkungan tersebut. Penelitian ini mempromosikan tiga element lingkungan imersi berbasis kampung bahasa Inggris dan menyajikan bagaimana peran mereka berkomitmen untuk mengembangkan strategi pembelajaran metakognitif siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Kerja bakti merupakan salah satu bentuk Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) untuk menumbuhkan semangat gotong royong. Kegiatan kerja bakti ini dilakukan oleh mahasiswa KKN Universitas Muhammadiyah Bulukumba (UMB) dan Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS) yang bekerjasama dengan kepala dan aparat desa serta masyarakat Desa Bonto tallasa, Kabupaten Bantaeng Sulawesi Selatan sebagai mitra. Kegiatan ini dilakukan pada tanggal 23 Desember 2023 bertempat di lima dusun yang ada di desa tersebut yaitu di Dusun Batu Sodong, Bata-Batayya, Kampung Beru, Senea, dan Bungloe. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dimulai dari observasi lokasi, diskusi jadwal pelaksanaan kegiatan, penyiapan surat izin, sosialisasi kegiatan, pengadaan alat dan bahan, serta pelaksanaan kegiatan. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk membantu menjaga kebersihan dan keindahan lingkungan desa, meningkatkan kualitas infrastruktur desa, membangun hubungan yang harmonis antara mahasiswa dan masyarakat, dan tentunya   menumbuhkan rasa gotong royong dan kebersamaan antar warga. Kerja bakti ini dilaksanakan oleh 25 orang dengan fokus pengerjaan adalah membersihkan sampah organik dan plastik serta perbaikan infrastruktur seperti papan nama jalan. Kegiatan ini berlangsung dengan lancar dan masyarakat mengaprsesiasi mahasiswa KKN atas inisiasi yang dilakukan.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges faced by vocational EFL (English as A Foreign Language) students during English oral presentations in class. A total of 30 students were selected as the sample through purposive sampling technique. Data were collected based on observation, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the most significant challenge faced by the students in class was anxiety during the question and answer session in the presentation activity. Technical difficulties during presentations were also a recurring problem. In addition, students also considered speaking and pronunciation as the most difficult aspects of their presentations. The results of this study provide knowledge that can also be a reference in overcoming anxiety, technical obstacles, and efforts to improve students' English skills, especially in the aspect of speaking as the main provision in classroom presentations.
